Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal weight change

lamictal

Avatar f tn Do serequel cause weight gain? (200 at bed time) It sure helps me sleep.Dr will replace geodon with Lamictal and tompamax. Thanks for any feed back.
607502 tn?1288247540 one day, I remember I tried to think hard which combo is perfect for BP and came with the conclusion that lamictal+seroquel is best. I thought because lamictal works upwards (i.e. good for depression, plus little side effects like weight gain and rashes rare) while seroquel works downwards (strong antimanic) also one is AC while the 2nd an AP so a flower from every garden and they must equalize each other.
1172209 tn?1263427216 When I went through this issue myself I asked to be changed to another mood stabilizer and I found Lamictal to be the most tolerable in this regard, certainly as regards weight gain but each person responds differently to each medication. Sometimes if a person is developing severe side effects from a medication it is worthwhile to consider available options. Speak to your psychiatrist about this.
Avatar m tn Hello! I was diagnosed 3 years ago. I had been taking Tegretol and Efexor for the depression, but the depression just wouldn't go away (mania I can handle but when I get depressed its the end of the world for me). I switched to Cipram (Celexa) three months ago but it just made me feel strange, plus the weight gain made me even more depressed. I'm pretty sure I should still be on meds but what other alternatives are there?
Avatar n tn As anti-psychotics can create diabetes and tardive dyskinesia if a person has straight bipolar (as opposed to bipolar with psychotic features where an anti-psychotic is absolutely needed) there is the potential to change to a mood stabilizer, none of which have the risk of creating tardive dyskinesia and out of all of them Lamictal has the least potential for weight gain and is generally safe and effective. Perhaps you could ask your psychiatrist about Lamictal.
Avatar f tn Talk to your dr and tell him you want to change because you believe it is causing a weight problem and others have had the same problem that you have talked to. That way you have something to stabllize you. Actually, the Lamictal worked much better for me.
Avatar f tn Started taking Lithium changed after about 7 months due to weight gain to Lamictal. I have been on Lamictal ever since. However, I have felt that the depression, change in mood, higher anxiety, and confusion has started slowly but is here. Can my meds. stop working or helping me after a period of time?
Avatar f tn Hi there, I've been on Wellbutrin (150) for a number of years, however, my Dr has recently added Lamictal as well. I'm so worried that the Lamictal will cause me to gain weight. (I previously gained weight with Abilify) Feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn Hello dear, I took Lamictal for 5 years & never experienced any weight gain issues from the medicine itself. If my weight ever did fluctuate during that period it was because I was depressed & eating a lot with no exercise. But then every time I would fix my eating habits and worked out, my weight was back to normal (skinny).
Avatar n tn I take Cymbalta and if I remember right I didn't gain more than 5 pounds at first. Now I am on a helper AD called Ambilify @ lowest dose for now. It didn't cause any weight change but I feel more anxious. Dr. said it wasn't a drug that caused weight change either way. Many of the meds that I've been on pluse health and depression and inability to exercise enough caused me to gain 80 lbs in over 8 years. Now I am VERY depressed about being obese. I relate to your worry.
2133558 tn?1368828158 I am so sick of these seizures medicine not working I wish the world would disappear!! No hope on Lamictal XR 600 mg told therapist hope whole world would disappear!! About had it can't eat, nausea, depressed up all night can't sleep from the smell and just sick of everything!! Been sick for 1 1/2 years lost 60 pounds, got diagnosed with eating disorder now seizures.. and had it!! Will it ever get better?? Or just keep getting worse?
Avatar m tn hi roscoe230 -- you didn't say how long you've been taking lamictal. It will take 4-6 weeks for the drug to settle in. I stumbled, mumbled, and bumbled, too, but got through it.
Avatar n tn I am taking Lamictal 150 but none of the other meds. Any change in medication may take some time but if you are not having really bad side effects I would journal about how you feel and also take advantage of the mood tracker on here. If the symptoms persist you can print and show the doctor how you have been feeling and they will likely change your medicines......Good Luck.
1441157 tn?1284075251 I have bipolar 2 disorder. I have done fine on Lamictal at 200mg for years. after a while we had to add Klonpin for anxiety and up it. I am now on 3 mg. I went through a long depression and decided to take Cymbalta, After about 2 months I had no sexual fuction (female), headaches, constipation, excessive sweating. I weaned off. Felt great for a few weeks now I am depressed again. I get triggers. What can I take for depression with low side effects? Like no weight gain and sexual disfuction.
Avatar f tn I take Lamictal, Seroquel, Zoloft and Wellbutrin. Lamictal works VERY well. I'm really pleased with the medication. Lamictal is a rashy drug - so don't be concerned if you get a rash. Chances that its the toxic rash are VERY VERY low. Only be concerned if you get a rash and a fever together. CrazyMeds website explains this all pretty well. The only side effect I get from Lamictal is the stupid "Lamictal Headache." Which can be a bother.
Avatar f tn With antipsychotics, the newest ones Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris have less of a potential of weight gain but as they can change heart rhythms you would have to ask your psychiatrist if they could be used safely if you have heart valve problems. This is a complete list of mood stabilizers although it should be noted some are FDA approved medications but still off label for bipolar: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.
980052 tn?1262967079 What i know is that for the past two years i did not feel any side effect. Anyway i like lamictal and dont want to change eventhough my doctor wants me to take lithium instead....
1448748 tn?1312956208 m afraid to try lyrica because I already have weight issues and a major side effect is weight gain. I have been on lamictal for 4 months and the higher the dose I felt better, but a felt like my mood was suffering like I was getting snappy.
Avatar f tn Out of the primary mood stabilizers Lamictal is least likely to cause cognitive confusion, sedation or weight gain. You could talk all this over with your psychiatrist.
1039200 tn?1314912008 I will enquire as to why they did not change to lamictal before, and the possibility of doing so in the future. It might make all the difference.
Avatar f tn After almost having a near death car accident, because of falling asleep, I stopped taking the medication. Quickly the weight fell off with no change to life style. But now after almost 6 years of being off meds I am noticing that my manic episodes are becoming more and more frequent and more severe. I am concerned with getting back on meds due to the weight gain and feeling of not being able to wake up and stay awake.
Avatar f tn I lost weight when I switched from lithium to lamictal (I had gained 50 lbs on lithium and lost about 10 after the switch). I more recently stopped taking zyprexa and have lost the rest of the weight. I am living in a developing country, so being away from fatty american foods is part of it, but I didn't loose weight here until after I went off of the zyprexa.
