Avatar n tn re with a doctor you trust and be careful with the meds, the side effects can be devastating. Infantile spasms can cause severe developmental delays and doctors work hard at trying to stop them because of it. Seizures are very complex and what works for one may not for another. What I have found is that all of the cases are so different, each child may have the same "type" of seizure but won't respond to the same med. They have never found a cause for his seizures.

Avatar f tn She is on a ketogenic diet to help with the Lyme, so she gets low carbs, no sugar or processed foods, no dyed foods, no grains. I have called her pediatrician and scheduled an appointment to evaluate her, but thought I would ask here as well, because it'll be two weeks before they can see her. Thoughts, insights? Avatar n tn May I suggest you do some research on the Ketogenic Diet. It is a huge lifestyle change, but is totally worth it. Ketogenic lifestyle requires that you cut out almost all carbs. You eat less than 20g of carbs a day, moderate amount of protein 50-100g/day (60-75 is ideal for most people), and 100-150g fat/day. It is a high fat diet that switches your body from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy.

Avatar m tn Hello, Several antiepileptic drugs and a hormonal therapy can be used to treat infantile spasms and valproate is tried as first line drug. Sometimes doctors start withv igabatrin (Sabril) which is often used as the initial therapy because it is relatively safe (especially for short-term use) and effective. If vigabatrin does not control the seizures in 3 or 4 days, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is usually used next. ACTH stops seizures in more than half of children with infantile spasms.
Avatar n tn s movements are manifestations of a seizure disorder known as infantile spasms (AKA hypsarrhythmia). The classical description of these spells are similar to what you describe: brief, jerking of the child, oftentimes with the hands flipping back and frequently occurring multiple times in clusters. Infantile spasms are generally divided into 2 broad categories: symptomatic and idiopathic/cryptogenic, the latter category a wastebasket for all of the cases that have no attributable etiology.

Avatar n tn My Neurologist changed my script to Lyrica believing that the symptoms would improve however they are not any better. The jerks and spasms exacerbate the pain i have with Ankylosing Spondylitis. painful neck back hip leg foot. excruciating at times. the symptoms get much worse when I have auras caused from migraines. the fast light flashes terminate with a total body jerk. it's exhausting. Ive been off Lyrica for two years and still no improvement.
Tbd key words will be low-carb, and keto. If you do look into ketogenic diet, do not use it as an excuse to eat too much fat; if you want to lose weight fat has to be limited to fats that come naturally with the foods that you eat, rather than lots of extra fats being added. There are now many cases where this has happened (you can look up Virta Health a company that tries to guide patients to do this), and there are also many online supportive communities.
Avatar m tn Think you should talk to someone familiar with the Ketogenic diet and see if there could be a relationship. I understand there are a number of hospitals which except this now as a treatment for epilespy. Maybe you could google it on line and find one close to you so you could talk to the people more about this procedure. From what I read it is important to address the problem earily in order to prevent brain damage.
