Common Questions and Answers about Keppra in the elderly

keppra

559697 tn?1243286385 Hello there, A complete history about his seizures and medical examination are very important in determining the accurate cause of your son’s problems. The common side effects of Keppra XR are sleepiness, dizziness, weakness etc.Very rarely few people may experience aggression, agitation, anxiety on this drug. There may be problems with muscle coordination while on this drug. Your son seems to be in a very difficult situation. I will advise you to consult his neurologist.
233622 tn?1279334905 Side effects are minor, may cause some temporary drowsiness, mild allergic reaction, and decreased sodium level in the elderly. In short, Trilepital is an improved Tegretol, more effective, better tolerated and that has never been the cause of any fatal side effects.
Avatar f tn The ringing is so bad in the night and in the morning think it makes the pain worse. Also on 2 1/2 mg Ativan but have been trying to come off it as the anxiety is much less. I did quit smoking and have started again but not very much. None of the Dr's can explain.
Avatar f tn He should see a doctor and discuss the possibility that the fits are from epilepsy, and what can be done about it.
Avatar f tn He offered help me to sweep the floor/yard. Hanging and picking up the clothes. He also concentrated on the weather make sure he picked up the clothes before it rained. He'll miss if he slept all the day long! LOL. He liked sleep (usually longer hour than us). He said to me, when getting old all the bones shrink, so can feel the body aching. He said exercise is important. Even he was on the bed, he also moving his toes and fingers a lot.
1596950 tn?1297352500 It seems the longer she is on it the more aggressive she gets. She hits herself in the head and she is really slow on learning the basics. She had never done this before until she was put on Keppra. Is there a reason why she is doing this?
Avatar m tn I think the scariest part of the whole thing was when the seizure was over, the look in his eyes was pitiful. He looked so scared. My husband and I sat with him and tried to calm him after we got our female mastiff out of the room - she was trying to help him. After he calmed down, my husband went to get dressed and I stayed next to Archie. He looked at me and began his low growling and appeared to not even know who I was. I had to walk away because I thought he was going to bite.
Avatar m tn My brother takes 2,000mg of Keppra twice a day. He is now in the "donut hole" of his Medicare coverage. I am now paying $770 per month for his Keppra. My question is Is there some way he or I can get help paying for his Keppra?
Avatar n tn i never got over the headaches and drowsiness but the others went away when my body got used to it.
Avatar m tn As my DD is in Keppra, and has previously been on other seizure meds, the Keppra, by far has had the least amount of side-effects. You could ask if some of her mood changes, memory loss, etc. are from the stroke vs. the Keppra. Please do not wean her off the medication without a Dr's directive... that could cause withdrawal seizures. My thoughts are with you that your mother gets well soon.
Avatar f tn t bother her after she adjusted to it but the new addition of 125 mg in the morning put her over the top in terms of bad moods, irritation, etc.. Please let me know about you so I can understand the relationship of weight, age and medicine doses. Your keppra doses werent high either, and yet you had a bad response to it. Please fill me in on this. Thanks so much.
Avatar f tn It always happened in the morning. One morning about 2 weeks later it was so bad I went to the urgent care clinic. I ended up being taken in ambulance to the ER as they said I was to unstable to let my husband drive me. Blood pressure would drop every time I sat up or stood up. Tachycardia resulted. I ended up staying the night at the hospital, and they could not figure out what it was.
Avatar m tn I really need to get off of it because it also causes osteoporosis in the bone. I am 46 now and over the years my attacks have become so much more different than the epilepsy. I think they are anxiety attacks and do not feel any much better than a seizure does. I see my doctor on the 31st and will talk to him about it. thank you so much for the insight!!
327385 tn?1378360731 has the keppra helped you lose weight and how long did it take you to get use to the med? thanks for all your help .
479255 tn?1208116148 t think a shrink is in order, either! The most common side effects of Keppra are behavioral (irritability, aggressiveness, etc.) My son is on Keppra (he's only 30 lbs, and he takes 1200mg/day), and it's definitely caused some awful behaviors, so we're titrating Lamictal in hopes of weaning the Keppra eventually. His neurologist labeled his "psychotic behaviors" Keppra-related (he has pica and ate a lightbulb), and I completely believe him.
502693 tn?1249151446 I was wondering if anyone is using keppra and the side effects, or any knowledge of keppra would be usefull, as my doctor is adding keppra to my epilm medication. Thanks for all your help....
Avatar f tn In my experience, in the early days in the hospital after my husbands stroke on the right temporal lobe, he had very vivid hallucinations which we thought were normal part of recovery. Some doctors told us yes, others told us it was common with urinary tract infections (catheters can cause this) and finally, correctly, the culprit was Keppra, the anti seizure medication they had him on. Once that was out of his system the hallucinations and false memories stopped.
Avatar f tn my 7 year duaghter has Nocturnal Complex Partial seizures and has been on Keppra liquid for 1 year now. they just increased her dose to 8 ml in the am and 10 ml in the pm. she has been extremely grumpy, irritable and very down in the slumps. Has anybody else experienced this? the Dr. thinks that she should talk to a Shrink, but I think it all has to do with the medication as she is normally a very happy, loving and caring girl...now she is very pessimistic on EVERYTHING!!!
Avatar n tn After the 30 days, I stopped the Keppra and just continued the Di Tan Tang 2/day. This lasted for 114 days. The vet then agreed to decrease the Di Tan Tang to 1/day. She has been at this level for 89 days. The vet is no longer there and the person that is answering my calls says I now must keep her on the meds because that is what is stopping the seizures. This is why I'm reaching out to see if Honey can be weaned off of the Di Tan Tang or must she forever be on them?
Avatar f tn 1000mlg's of Keppra a day is actually not very much, but in your case the side effects are putting you down. Adderall can help with you being tired all the time, but it also has side effects that can be troubling. It can be habit forming and lead to dependence, also in some cases cause seizures. I personally would ask your doctor if you could be put on different type of seizure med that will not make you as tired, but that is just my two cents.
Avatar f tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Understand your predicament. Emotional liability can occur with keppra. The best way to control anger is by self conditioning. You can channel this anger into some form of sport like athletics. Alternatively, you can try relaxation techniques like going for long walks or yoga and meditation. They help to calm your mind and help you to list your priorities. A calm and peaceful mind is more focused and can achieve a lot.
Avatar m tn its been 8 months since my mothers TBI- she had a seizure yesterday-she has been off keppra for 1 1/2 months-the side effects of keppra are aweful-they ask her questions and wonder why she is out of it and doesn't know her last name-(after they gave her keppra in the hospital) what can she take that is less evasive to her health and recovery??
Avatar f tn TL;DR: I think Keppra makes me dehydrated because alcohol makes me feel super-dehydrated even if I follow the 2:1 water:alcohol ratio, and because I seem to have a hard time staying hydrated in general. But I'm seeing little if any literature to support dehydration as a Keppra side effect. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Avatar f tn She takes it only at night because of her extreme tiredness when she began it in the morning initially, and will be eased on to a second does in the morning next week. She's on only 250 mg once nightly now. Next week we're adding 125 mg to the morning and increasing that to a 250 mg morning dose the following week. Here are my questions: 1. What is the LOWEST effective dose for a 100 lb girl (age 20).
