Keppra and phenobarbital

Common Questions and Answers about Keppra and phenobarbital

keppra

Avatar f tn I had been on phenobarbital for 28 years. My Dr took me off of phenobarbital and prescribed keppra. He said it would make feel better than phenobarbital did(fewer side effects like fatigue) within a couple of weeks, I started drinking again and haven't been able to stop. Is there any way that keppra could somehow be responsible?
Avatar m tn 8 mg twice a day phenobarbital as well as adding another 500 mg keppra to what he was taking. He has been very drowsy and started stumbling and falling into walls. He is also dragging his back feet like he's not picking up his feet. I'm very worried about my baby. Has anyone else had this experience? I talked to the vet and am going back to just 500mg of keppra with the phenobarbital twice daily. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Avatar f tn So after staying overnight and at the vet the next day he came home and has been on Keppra and phenobarbital. 500mg 2x a day Keppra and 60mg 2x a day pheno. He has the side effects which are lessening but hasn't been as bad as I read could be. He is very responsive and is pretty much himself besides the side effects(weak legs, tired). It's been 6 days and no seizures so far. Will be going to vet in a week for check up and blood test again. I am so on edge..
641243 tn?1235752084 We are going to try Levetiracetam (also called Keppra) in addition to his Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide. Keppra has no side effects, which is great, so fingers crossed that we see some dramatic results with this!
Avatar f tn , now they have added Keppra to his phenobarbital and after a visit with an animal neurologist, who believes my dog has a tumor based on some exercises he put him through, and added prednisone to the mix, I feel all of this is excessive and unsafe for my dog but he's never had any medical conditions before so I don't know what is 'normal' in doggie meds - are pheno-barbital, Keppra and Prednisone commonly prescribed together for seizures?
Avatar n tn As we walked in the door he had a tonic clonic seizure, stopped breathing and was immediately admitted to the hospital and started on phenobarbital..another eeg was done....NORMAL RESULTS AGAIN!!..No seizures during the eeg, so....... He was on the phenobarb for several months but it just turned a normally happy little fellow in to a grouchy man!! and his sleeping was just rediculous!! he had always slep but all of a sudden he was waking at night and...oh it was aweful....
Avatar f tn I read something on rxlist about moodswings and irritibility related to Keppra. It's believed that Keppra makes your brain "dump" Vitamin B6 at times which lowers dopamine or seratonin levels and makes you feel horrible. Does your daughter take vitamins? I'd try some Vitamin B6 if her multivitamin doesn't contain it. I started taking Trader Joe's High Potency vitamins and feel much, much better since starting. Good luck.
Avatar f tn My brother in law is a 61 y/o white male who has had grand mal seizures since the age of 11. He was put on Dilantin and Phenobarbital and still continues to take those meds, as well as Zeppra. He has taken Lamictal in the past; but, began having seizures and it was eventually d/c'd and replaced w/Keppra. He cannot take Depakote or Tegratol. Both of those cause him to have continuous seizures. He almost died trying to switch to them and was hospitalized for over 6 weeks.
Avatar f tn Gran Mal until 13 years old then complex partials ever since. Presently take Keppra 500 mg 1 a.m., 1 p.m.; phenobarbital 97.2 1 p.m. I have documented short-term memory loss plus bouts of depression.(no meds for depression) Lately I have been experiencing extreme sleeplessness. Who/where do I start for these? Are they all related? My GP? Neuro? Psych? A sleep clinic?
16199931 tn?1446049201 t get as barky and falls to sleep sooner. We went to the vet for her check up and was prescribed Keppra to go with the PB, replacing the valium with the Keppra. I am hoping that this combo will do the trick...the vet said that the downside is that the Keppra must be given every eight hours and I would have to get up at night. Hello, I'm up four times a night now...once would be a blessing!!! I will keep everyone posted with our progress!!!
Avatar f tn My daughter is now experiencing several side effects to keppra. She is extremely drowsy, very short tempered, depressed, and is reporting to me that her memory is 'foggy'. She's on a very low dose of keppra, only 250 mg at night and 125 mg in the morning. She's been on it a total of 3 weeks now. I've been with her and she seems to be very melancholy and also short fused over the many situations. She weighs 100 pounds and is 20 years old.
Avatar m tn How much Keppra do you take, and how long did it take before you seizures completely stopped? Thank you for reading!
Avatar n tn They are like a partial complex seizure. I saw a neurologist and was started on Keppra. I was up to 2,500mg a day and they were not stopping. I began to track them carefully and I believe I saw a pattern of only during the 2nd half of my monthly cycle, days 15 - 28 (and usually between 18 and 21) My neurologist decided to put me in the hospital to do a video EEG monitoring and I told him the dates it needed to be. We hit it right and it was determined that my seizures are NES.
Avatar m tn 5 kgs and was issued 15mg tablets, to be divided in half and taken twice a day. SInce taking the medication, my dog has been acting very different. He wanders relessly around the house, low energy and lethargic, staring as if in a trance, flying through air as if he's superdog. IT's all so unusual. Can you please share with me if you have experienced this with your pet? It's very sad to watch him go through this, and more so because I don't know what more I could be doing.
Avatar f tn Anyone else on Keppra to prevent myoclonic jerks (JME diagnosed)? I am, and have been on Keppra for almost 5 years. Started at age 23 and I am now 28. At the beginning they made me very sluggish, but after about 2 months I felt wonderful (since it was the first time in my life I wasn't having seizures!!
Avatar n tn My mom has been addicted to fiorinal with codeine for over 20 years now. in addition to that she has been, at the same time, taking xanax, percocet, valium, and soma's. she was taking upwards of 30+ fiorinal daily at one point but has gone down to about 6-10 a day right now, but still mixing with the other benzo's. she recently tried to get off them and had the withdrawal seizures.
Avatar n tn After a very frightening last 2 weeks of my boyfriend on Keppra my doctor did say to ween him off which I've done. Today is the first day off it and he still seems to have the dillusional aggressive side effects that I am hopeful after reading your post.....I pray to god that the old person before this drug comes back. Avatar f tn I to have been taking Keppra and told can't drive for six months, yesterday my Oncologist informed me that only a Neurologist can authorize driving and I will need to probably get off keppra to get permission to drive. Was also informed that you can not just stop this drug.
673183 tn?1232732878 I have a friend who wants to experiement with it and I dont really know anything about it. I would like to tell her what to expect and possibly talk her out of it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I know that I can't stop her from doing it literally, but I would like to know how it will affect her.
Avatar f tn They only lasted about a minute and he regained his composure in about two minutes. The vet immediately put him on phenobarbital and he has been taking 1 pill every 12 hours and so far he has not had another seizure since. Yesterday morning and this morning he woke up groggy and it looked as if his back legs are getting weak. When I let him outside this morning back legs gave out.
429209 tn?1224166589 It usually is taken one to three times a day and may be taken with or without food. If you take phenobarbital once a day, take it at bedtime. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take phenobarbital exactly as directed. If you are taking phenobarbital to control convulsions or seizures, follow the exact schedule prescribed by your doctor. Phenobarbital can be habit-forming.
959034 tn?1253671476 I am 47 and have had seizures since the onset of my menstrual cycle when I was 13. As the years have gone by new medications came about. At first I was on phenobarbital and tegretol. Those only lightened the seizures. Later I was put on Dilantin. A little more helpful but not controlling. When I was about 28, a doctor put me on Depakene (Depakote). It suppressed my seizures well. I always felt worse during my periods or when i was stressed or lack of sleep.
