Common Questions and Answers about Keppra and memory

keppra

Avatar n tn same thing here I was on 3000 mg of keppra/day and kept haveing 25-30 partial seizures a month and every 3 months I would have a short term memory loss, I would feel funny then confused i would ask my wife questions and we would realize i could not remember anything short term like the entire morning or previous evening.
1596950 tn?1297352500 He had problems with aggression and severe memory loss. He has not taken Keppra for several years, but has not regained his memory.
Avatar f tn My daughter is now experiencing several side effects to keppra. She is extremely drowsy, very short tempered, depressed, and is reporting to me that her memory is 'foggy'. She's on a very low dose of keppra, only 250 mg at night and 125 mg in the morning. She's been on it a total of 3 weeks now. I've been with her and she seems to be very melancholy and also short fused over the many situations. She weighs 100 pounds and is 20 years old.
Avatar m tn side effects of Keppra seem to contradict what our goals for mom are....memory loss, mood changes, mental changes and vision changes among others. Is Keppra safe to use for this (it is not being used with any other seizure medication....just by itself)? We want to wean her off, but the doctor is wanting to keep her on it.
471949 tn?1236904026 My 15 yr old son had a closed head injury and developed epilepsy. We have been thru several meds; tegretol, depakote, carbitrol, and topamax, and finally keppra. He too has nocturnal seizures arising from his frontal lobe. These meds come with terrible side effects, good luck finding the right one for your son. I know that on topamax my son had issues with memory and concentration, he couldn't even spell "if" when he was 12 ! I knew that something was wrong!
Avatar f tn s getting worse and not better, and the walk in doctor said it was not a side effect of the keppra medication. Could that spell of seizures have caused damage in my brain, and if so will it get better? Or do you think it is something else? My family doctor just said to see my neurologist and keep eating on a balanced diet, but my next appointment with my neurologist is January 2014, and I don't know what else to do at this point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
502693 tn?1249151446 HI Debz123 Just joined this forum and saw you post. My doc is also switching my tegretol to keppra and keeping the epilim, and am just wondering how you found it in terms of seizure control and side effects? I think I can live with the side effects, as the epilim has left me with short memory loss and am always tired, but I'm really nervous switching meds as have had good seizure control (one in every 6 years for the last twenty). Any info. would be great thanks!
Avatar f tn I read something on rxlist about moodswings and irritibility related to Keppra. It's believed that Keppra makes your brain "dump" Vitamin B6 at times which lowers dopamine or seratonin levels and makes you feel horrible. Does your daughter take vitamins? I'd try some Vitamin B6 if her multivitamin doesn't contain it. I started taking Trader Joe's High Potency vitamins and feel much, much better since starting. Good luck.
1165078 tn?1338655745 thank you, yes when they did the bone density test after they found the torn tendon, they put me on vita D supplements.. I am low on Vita D.. because of Keppra and also because I don't eat dairy..
Avatar m tn its been 8 months since my mothers TBI- she had a seizure yesterday-she has been off keppra for 1 1/2 months-the side effects of keppra are aweful-they ask her questions and wonder why she is out of it and doesn't know her last name-(after they gave her keppra in the hospital) what can she take that is less evasive to her health and recovery??
Avatar f tn I know you are likely well past this acute stage and hopefully your husbands memory and delerium have improved by now, but I am commenting in case someone else reads this post looking for answers. In my experience, in the early days in the hospital after my husbands stroke on the right temporal lobe, he had very vivid hallucinations which we thought were normal part of recovery.
Avatar f tn Also, what is Valproate? Is it for seizures? I have read that Keppra interferes with memory and learning new material. Have you any opinion on this? 3. Also, she developed ringworm rash while on Lamictal. Do you think it's related? She is now beginning Keppra. Thanks!
Avatar f tn I am on keppra and lamotrigine (sp?) Lamotrigine seems to help with the anger issues keppra was causing.
Avatar m tn I have heard keppra is bad about causing mood swings. I am on tegretol. I had my first (febrile) seizure when I was 5 and that's what I was put on. In Sept and Nov I had alot of very nasty grand mals. I'm not going to say this to scare you, but you should be aware. I have lost a good deal of my memory (as far as past memories). I can be reminded easily of some and some I have no recollection. My short term memory has been affected too. Just try to be patient with her and your doctors.
Avatar f tn i was put on keppra and now am having a lot of confusion and am very tired and extremely moody. is this related to the seizure and or the medication?
Avatar n tn The neurologist figured the Topamax just was not working and then put him on Keppra. (He was still taking 1 dilantin and weaned off that dilantin just before going on Keppra) I had him wean off the Topamax really slow, much slower than the neurologist wanted at first but neuro. gave us his ok to wean off slow. He also weaned on Keppra at a slow dosage. The Keppra worked ok and then he had a few other seizures, one he actually ended up w/ a compression fracture in his back.
Avatar f tn I had grand Mal seizures and my memory had always been horrible every since.
1558393 tn?1299070031 I had the surgery a year ago and I still deal with chronic joint and muscle pain daily. So once you are off the Keppra, if you are still experiencing the pain, I would look into it further. From what I have discovered so far is that muscles and ligaments are loose around the joints thereby causing me pain. You may want to look into some type of PT to help keep those muscles strong. Hopefully you will get some more answers on the other questions!
Avatar f tn i called my neuro and it was a side effect of the keppra . my neuro gave me klonipin and it has helped 99% . my neuro told me i could hurt myself or others so call his neuro asap and report his behavior. i still take the keppra but the klonopin has eased the anger and temper .
Avatar m tn How much Keppra do you take, and how long did it take before you seizures completely stopped? Thank you for reading!
Avatar n tn My family physician sent me immediately to a neurologist and I am taking 500 mg of Keppra twice per day. This controls my seizures and I am very fortunate to only have mild episodes of disorientation once in a while. I have always had a great memory. Recently, I was thinking about my children and could not remember what grades they are in. At the time I just shrugged it off. My son's birthday is tomorrow and I simply can't remember what year he was born in.
Avatar m tn Right now I am actually on Keppra and Topamax and they have both kept me seizure free for over 3+ years and I have no side effects. My memory isn't that great but I'm not sure I can blame the drugs. The two of those as a combo, for me, are wonderful!
Avatar n tn They are like a partial complex seizure. I saw a neurologist and was started on Keppra. I was up to 2,500mg a day and they were not stopping. I began to track them carefully and I believe I saw a pattern of only during the 2nd half of my monthly cycle, days 15 - 28 (and usually between 18 and 21) My neurologist decided to put me in the hospital to do a video EEG monitoring and I told him the dates it needed to be. We hit it right and it was determined that my seizures are NES.
Avatar f tn Anyone else on Keppra to prevent myoclonic jerks (JME diagnosed)? I am, and have been on Keppra for almost 5 years. Started at age 23 and I am now 28. At the beginning they made me very sluggish, but after about 2 months I felt wonderful (since it was the first time in my life I wasn't having seizures!!
