Common Questions and Answers about Jantoven versus coumadin

jantoven

Avatar m tn I have never taken Warfarin, but I do work in healthcare and am very familiar with coumadin (warfarin). I do check patients PT/INR levels. The only problem I had while taking Pradaxa was my gums bleeding. It was not a significant amount. I did let my EP guy know about it, and he said just one of the side effects. So I just monitored it and had to not brush my teeth so vigorously. But I ate what I wanted to, no PT/INR checks.
Avatar n tn why did my pharmacist change me to jantoven when I have been taking warfarin?
Avatar m tn How does one evaluate the risk of clot formation without blood thinners versus the risk of bleeding in the brain when on blood thinners? A neurosurgeon told me that blood thinners were definitely out. Is an eventual stroke then my only option?

Avatar n tn What are the relative merits for aspirin treatment versus Coumadin for Atrial Fib when there are little or no other stroke isk factors?
Avatar f tn He had one isolated event of A-fib for which he was hospitalized to correct the situation, and put on coumadin and Tykosin. He has never had any other symptoms of A-fib, has never been diagnosed with any other indicators of heart disease, and his BP is well controlled with drugs. Unfortunately, he has virtually no strength in his legs, constant leg-hip-back pain, urinary and bowel incontinence, and very limited energy.
Avatar f tn PROZAC and other antidepressant medicines may increase your risk of bleeding or bruising, especially if you take the blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs, like ibuprofen or naproxen), or aspirin." So there you have it. But that also says: "Do not stop PROZAC without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Avatar m tn Okay' heres the deal. My boyfriend is supposed to take 10 MG's of coumadin sun. Tue. Thur. And Saturday and 12.5 Mgs Mon. Wed. And Fri. He doesn't have health insurance. We have found a doctor that is reasonably priced considering he doesn't have health insurance but his doctor won't write him for his blood thinners until he gets his INR. His doctor doesn't do the test in the office and it has to be done at the hospital where they want upwards of $150 to do the INR.
996946 tn?1503249112 I take coumadin for a-fib and I was wondering if coumadin levels are affected by cortisol levels in the blood. Also do blood sugar levels have an effect on coumadin levels.
Avatar n tn my husband is 51 years old and has had by-pass surgery, and has a mechanical valve and is having sever side effects from the coumadin. We need a safe alternative for coumadin without compromising his health. We are looking for a doctor to help support this transition. We reside in PA. and hope to find a medical doctor that will monitor this change, what is your opinion?
Avatar m tn I have visited the Cleveland Heart Clinic in 2007. I was put on coumadin because I had a small stroke after 12 hrs. of a-fib (prior to being put on sotalol). I no longer have a-fib on sotalol. I would like to get off coumadin and take 1 or 2 81 mg. aspirin instead. Do you think this would be prudent?
Avatar m tn He has to tell the physician he wants to get off coumadin and try another anticoagulant. Coumadin is the so-called "standard of care", and a physician will not suggest another treatment unless you initiate the request. Plavix is an alternative that enables you to live with a more varied diet. The downside is that Plavix is not easily reversible, wheras Coumadin is.
Avatar m tn Mom is 81 and has been on Coumadin for 5 yrs. Approx 1 yr ago, she had an upper GI bleed (dark stool) and required several units of blood. She was taken off Coumadin and stroked; symptoms . She was treated within 30 minutes with intravenous TPA, with near 100% recovery. Coumadin was restarted. 11 months later, Mom experienced trace bright red blood with diarrhea. INR/PT within normal range, and blood count was good. She was admitted and diagnosed with colitis.
Avatar n tn No good coumadin manager would force the patient to diet the dose of coumadin they have prescribed. A good coumadin manager doses the diet. That is why the diet needs to be consistent. If he is new to coumadin, tell him to be patient. It can take a little while to settle into a consistent INR. Few people are in the desired range right from beginning ACT. Dosage changes should be a little at a time or you get into a yo-yo situation.
Avatar n tn Should I be on coumadin for life if I had one A-Fib event most likley caused by over medication for hypothyroid, That situation is now ok. All of my conditions are listed below. 1.Five yrs. post double bypass. 2.Hypertension controlled. 3.Type 2 Diabetes controlled. 4.Hypothyroid. 5.Hiatal Hernia with barretts monitored. These conditions are well controlled and I am still working as a professional pilot. The A-Fib happened during my annual physical when the thyroid medication issue came up.
Avatar n tn The first thing to do is to politely ask her physician if he would consider other protocols than coumadin. Among other problems is it often very difficult to maintain consistent levels. I have discussed coumadin in other posts. The physician has to suggest coumadin, because that is the current "standard of care". If the PATIENT pops the question, he can then discuss other alternatives (they are there), which do not provide as much anti-coagulent action, but permit a normal diet.
233622 tn?1279334905 Does anyone know how long coumadin takes to exit your system? Are there withdraw side effects? I know this is off topic but I could not find the answers to these questions anywhere. My mom had knee replacement and had to use coumadin for several weeks. She was not feeling well at all. She had a list of side effects. She tool her last pill yesterday. anyone know?
Avatar n tn what does coumadin have to do with swelling of feet and legs toes and every part of my lower from knees to feet.
Avatar m tn I have been on Coumadin now for about a week - started with Lovemox shots for 5 days plus 4mg Coumadin. Am now up to 8mg Coumadin and going on 10mg this evevivg. I am being extremely careful re: vitamin K but my pro-time is still only 1.4. I have been a vegan for over 35 years and took vitamin E and Red Yeast Rice every day. I was told to stop my vitamins and am now wondering if this might be one reason why Coumadin doesn't appear to be working too well.
90270 tn?1199334469 For those on coumadin it would be neat to add a PT/INR tracker to monitor our levels better. On the tracker, the PT/INR values could be reported as well as any changes in coumadin such as held, increased to such and such or decreased. Coumadin doses should be able to be added to the tracker. Thanks!
Avatar f tn First off, I don't know who is monitoring your coumadin but your INR--established by the World Health Organization--should be between 2.0 and 3.0. INR stands for International Normalized Ration. This means that no matter where you go or what instrument is used, the same method of calculation is used to determine the prothrombin time (how long it takes your blood to clot).
Avatar f tn Hi Ray....I agree w/ed34. Warfarin is generic for Coumadin. Since it is the generic for brand Coumadin it is given in same dose. Mom took Warfarin for the 1st three months after her event. Month four, the pharmacy was temporarily out so I took brand name Coumadin (more$$, of course ;-) but it was the exact same dose. Month five, she was back on Warfarin. Best to you...
Avatar f tn Tonight while taking my Coumadin(2.5 mg) I felt something in my mouth. I thought it was a little bit of ice and started chewing on it. It was the coumadin. I know you're not supposed to chew it. What happens if you do?
