You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. If your friends at home test results show low glucose levels "several times per week" it is time to have his/her insulin dosages re-evaluated by their physician.
Most dogs do well on either Novolin N or Humulin N. Personally, I found Humulin N to work better for my dog. The cost of a bottle of insulin at WalMart is about $25 compared to $50 for the same thing at a regular retail pharmacy.
7. There are many diets you can use. You are not limited to w/d, which the vets seem to push! I don't know if your dog vomited because he didn't like the w/d, but maybe you have an idea about why that happened. It may have been because his sugar was high.
I have been a type 1 diabetic for over 16 years and have always been taking around 6 units of R in the morning with some N. That has seemed to work fine until recently my lunch blood sugar levels have been sky high. I keep adding more R (i'm not at 10 units) and it seems like the R is not working at all. I have even changed the bottle just in case there was something wrong with that vial and nothing has changed.
My whole body starts swelling up after weeks of Humulin N shots starting from the feet and legs. I am very sure this is the cause because the swelling subsides and my body will return to normal if I stop my injections. Please help.
I am taking Humulin-N but my sugar level every morning is around 225.
s it and I know that my dog is not getting enough nutrients from this diet. She was diagnosed in May of 2006 at the age of 5. She gets 3 units of HUMULIN N twice a day. Her last Frutosomine test was on the high side, "490" but her vet said that there is no need for concern.

If it is just running out refill the prescription early 2 days. If you have Humilin R on hand I question how old it is. If more than 30 days it is probably expired anyway. I also question having this Insulin as it has been largely discontinued for use as better insulins are now available.
But the short answer is Novolog and Humlin R do not act in the same manner so substiuting can be very tricky and is probably not recommended.
Zoe - I think Windchimes meant humulin insulin not huminsulin. Humulin is considered an intermediate acting insulin as its duration is 24 hours, but this can vary per individual. LANTUS, on the other hand, is considered long lasting as its duration is up to 36 hours.

As it proves itself to be safe over a longer period of time, that need will be less, and the prescription requirement will go away. Humulin, for example, has been on the market long enough that it no longer needs a prescription, but I believe I've verified on the FDA web site that the FDA required a prescription when it first came on the market. Sorry, I'm not a believer in conspiracy theories like this.
If it risers even without eating your dose needs to be increased. Typically insulin would be increased by 1 - 3 units / 3 days as you slowly adjust.
Meal time insulin your ration may not be 1:25. It maybe 1:20 or even 1:10. Again you have to work this out by experimenting over time. It will also help greatly if you limit how much carbs you eat.

Some people find that one works more effectively than the other, so which is used is really up to the patient. Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin. It is absorbed more slowly, and it's effects last longer, about 12 hours. Usually NPH is used in combination with one of the fast acting insulins. An alternative long acting insulin would be Lantus.
I live in Kenya and cannot find any supply of NovoLog there is only Humulin R. I need help to know if this is accceptable please!!!
50 yr. old male with type 2 insulin resistant diabetes (currently taking 66 units of HUMULIN RU500 daily) diagnosed with CHF today. Severe swelling in legs, knees, ankles and feet. Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, chronic fatigue. Extremely overweight (448lbs. was 445lbs yesterday). Is currently on 4mg of Bumex daily and 2.5 mg of metalozone (another water pill) every other day).
If you are in US I understand you can buy the old insulins (Humulin N and R over the counter in wallmart quite cheaply). This will be better than none. You can also get cheaper meter and strips the same way. I assume you do know how to use insulin properly.
You need to check how you can get assistance. Do you have a Dr? Can you get access to any assistance. Sounds like you might be in trouble with really high blood sugars. Juice can make your sugars very high.
How frequent I can take insulin Humulin 70/30. I am taking 25 unit before each meal some just before meal or sometime after meal.

hi, I always have problems with my blood sugar level. I m using humulin. even though I eat a normal portion of meal, my blood sugar goes up after each meal. but it goes down to normal level after 4-5 hours. it makes me confused because I cant inject more because I will get low, what should I do?
I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
