If I recall, this theory came out of Eli Lilly when it came out with Prozac, and it was reinforced by a book by a psychiatrist paid by Eli Lilly that became a best seller when that drug was the first SSRI to come out. They claimed, and the book claimed even more, that this was the end of mental illness, which of course was and is ridiculous and we now know that serotonin levels may have nothing to do with why a person starts to have mental problems.
Mostly, the chemical imbalance theory most people think of was spread by Eli Lilly and then other companies when they came up with ssris and then snris. Serotonin wasn't the problem then and it isn't now. Depression can happen to anyone, sometime triggered by an event and sometimes from out of nowhere. Some day we'll know why, but we don't now, and we still have the arguments about genetics, chemical imbalances, and traumatic events as the cause.
My whole body starts swelling up after weeks of Humulin N shots starting from the feet and legs. I am very sure this is the cause because the swelling subsides and my body will return to normal if I stop my injections. Please help.
I am taking Humulin-N but my sugar level every morning is around 225.
Wow! I cannot believe the amount of mis-information on this site. First, I would like to address the general issue of Lantus, Humulog (Novolog) and other insulins that do require a prescription. The FDA requires that new pharmacological products developed by Eli Lilly & Novonordisk, etal be filled in US pharmacies with a prescription. In the early '90's a congressional law was passed to allow insulins on the market at that time to be available without prescriptions.

If it is just running out refill the prescription early 2 days. If you have Humilin R on hand I question how old it is. If more than 30 days it is probably expired anyway. I also question having this Insulin as it has been largely discontinued for use as better insulins are now available.
But the short answer is Novolog and Humlin R do not act in the same manner so substiuting can be very tricky and is probably not recommended.
Zoe - I think Windchimes meant humulin insulin not huminsulin. Humulin is considered an intermediate acting insulin as its duration is 24 hours, but this can vary per individual. LANTUS, on the other hand, is considered long lasting as its duration is up to 36 hours.

You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. If your friends at home test results show low glucose levels "several times per week" it is time to have his/her insulin dosages re-evaluated by their physician.
What's a good name that goes with Eli? I know Eli is definitely going to be in my son's name, just don't know if it'll be the first or middle name. We thought of Christopher Eli and Isaiah Eli but not too sure on them.
It does however, make it very important to have the animal based insulins available so that people have a choice in treatment. My research has also indicated that Eli Lilly, the makers of Humulin Insulin are going to (or have) stopped producing the Beef and Pork Insulin which is very unfortunate as it takes away that choice.

It's true that Paxil and Effexor are by far the worst for this, but all antidepressants can cause withdrawal. Celexa has high numbers, Lexapro has high numbers, all snris have high numbers.
