Avatar n tn I am 58 yrs old, have BPH and had not taken medicine for the condition, as symptoms were not that bad. While in S. America in November, I had pain which was thought to be from kidney stones. I was given scopolamine. The doctor didn't ask about BPH and I didn't know that the med had side effects related to prostate. It became hard to urinate any more than small quantities at a time. I began retaining fluids, something that was determined after I returned home to US.
Avatar f tn I recently had a CT scan of the Abdomen and pelvis. I cannot get an appointment for the results for two weeks but in the meantime I have asked for a copy of my results of the CT. I just want to know what "Pelvic Pleboliths, Cholelithiasis and benign sclerosis of the left femoral head" means. The report also reads " benign appearing cystic change within the right ovary - No free fluid".
Avatar n tn what is the common treatment for someone that has a history of kidney stones if entering the ER. shouldn't this pt get a stent?
Avatar n tn Hi, I understand you concern. Shockwave lithotripsy is the primary intervention of choice for renal and ureteral stones. “Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) has made a revolution in the treatment of urolithiasis. It is a safe procedure with a lower morbidity than open surgery or percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCN.”)(1) Also, it is important to note that the characteristic and size of renal and ureteral stones are important in choosing lithotripsy as the management of choice.
Avatar f tn My question is do any of you see a pain management dr for pain related to kidney stones? Ive gotten stones for the last 18 years but they used to come about anywhere from once or twice a year with one 3 year gap of no stones which was heavenly. Now since novemeber they seem to forming rapidly. Is this any indication that this may continue to be a frequent problem or could this just be a flukish year? My urologist doesn't seem to have any real idea so i was looking for personal experiences.
Avatar f tn My only regret in all this is that I should have waited a little longer before I went ahead with this very painful procedure and give my body more time to dissolve these stones naturally as I originally had 9 stones 3 months ago then 1 week before my op I had a scan that showed up 5 stones but when they went into my kidney they only found two left.
Avatar n tn Hi. I can not really tell exactly but the thing is stones within the ureters irritate the ureters."Investigators have shown that larger stones tend to cause more intense ureteral inflammatory reactions and that submucosal edema in the vicinity of a stone may aggravate urinary obstruction and calculus retention." Avatar f tn I have been reading that lemon juice is good at preventing calcium stones, but it may be bad for phosphate stones, so I am not sure if I should keep with the lemon juice. I should also note that I do not have insurance(its a long story How I was able to get the stone analysed), and though I am trying to get insurance, I still want some advice to prevent these stones. Thanks in advance!
Avatar n tn If your doc prescribed Flomax for the kidney stone, more than likely that is the issue, as it is also prescribed for prostate issues, and is a blocker, like the above poster mentioned. I know this, as I have the same issue... The Internet is a lovely thing...
Avatar m tn I have had numerous kidney-stones, both renal & ureteral (and a few bladder thrown in for good measure), but I can't say that the stones have ever caused the tip on my penis any type of pain. Of the top of my head, and without really knowing anything about what you have going on, it's difficult to say whether or not your stones and your pain are related in any way. In my experience, I'd say that they are UNRELATED to one another.
Avatar m tn Prazosin does the same thing as Flomax and is okay for women to take. The class drug is called alpha blockers. The other name for these drugs is mini press and they are sometimes used for high blood pressure. Prazosin is also used for PTSD/nightmares and it works for most people.
Avatar f tn I just had a cystoscopy for a ureteral stent implant and a foley catheter put in on 04-Sept-2010. My Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL rock-shock) on 02-Sept-2010 didn't work on a 5x9 ureteral stone causing colic. The cysto was quite mutilating (I'm sure superficially), it left me with a very irritating blood squirting cath setup (19 French), but with the anotomical difference of the male urethra I'm sure that's very common.
187666 tn?1331173345 Hello, Most people with kidney stones will have blood in the urine .The urine may be pink or reddish, or the blood may be visible only with urine dipstick testing or microscopic examination of the urine. In people who do not pass kidney stone lithotripsy is the treatment of choice. It is indicated for stones 1 cm or less in the kidney and upper ureter. Contact your doctor if the haematuria is persisting. Persistent haematuria can lead to weakness, dizziness and hypotension.
Avatar n tn however, in the presence of kidney or ureteral stones, stenting is ideally done during cystoscopy. Although ureteral stenting is undoubtedly an important procedure for the release of ureteral obstruction, the indications for stent insertion should be carefully considered in each patient. A stent can remain inside the ureter for about 3 months. In case the patient has severe bleeding or dispositioned stent or recurrent infections then change of stent or removal of stent can be considered.
533880 tn?1237612452 This can be caused by a number of things, and should be evaluated by a urologist. Stones in the ureter, bladder outlet obstruction with ureteral reflux, a mass in the pelvis causing obstruction of the ureter, etc. If infection was causing the dilation one would expect a urinalysis with culture to be positive. In absence of infection other causes need to be ruled out.
Avatar n tn the only thing you can really do to help with preventing seeing me again for more kidney stones is to keep drinking lots of water. Even then, if you're prone to get them you will, but hopefully with the amount of water you're drinking and the Flomax helping too, you'll pass more of the stones you form and pass them more easily too".
Avatar n tn If pain killers do not relieve the pain, the other causes for this could be recurrence of stones, ureteral stricture or vaginal inflammation and infection. Take some anti inflammatory pain killers and apply warm compresses. If the symptoms persist then get it evaluated from a urologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar f tn I had 3 kidney stones removed 1/12/09 and a stent put in. Was doing nicely until showering today. I caught the wash rag on the strings that looped for femoval of the stent and now I am having a hard time getting comfortable. I wouldn't use the word pain, just extreme discomfort. Do I need to have the location of the stent checked? It is scheduled to be removed 1/19/09. Just two days.
Avatar m tn Distinguishing between those and ureteral stones or calcified lymphnodes is something the radiologist hopefully can do successfully. See private message for more info re: phleboliths. It's important to determine the type of kidney stones you are suffering from: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/kidney-stones/DS00282/METHOD=print so your doctor can know best how to treat you.
Avatar m tn Hi there. I'm so sorry you're having these urinary issues. Hematuria AND bilateral hydronephrosis... Not fun for you. Are you experiencing any flank pain? What type of scan did they perform? What medication(s) are you taking? Do you have any other abnormal symptoms? The reason I ask about what kind of scan was used to make the assessment, is that not all types of stones show up on X-rays.
Avatar m tn If there is a position that you can get into to eliminate the pain of a kidney stone and you find one that works, please post it on here so we'll all know. I'm not trying to be smart mouthed with you but after 40 plus stones, over 30 years, I haven't found that position yet and I doubt you will either. .
514293 tn?1281462119 The ureteral spasms (contraction of the ureters ) will induce pain which may need immediate management. For stones less than 4 mm, these may pass spontaneously and may only require supportive therapy such as increase in fluid intake. You may discuss this with your urologist as the type of stones, its location and its size as well as the presence of underlying kidney problems may influence management. Do you have any change in urine character? Have you been modifying you diet lately?
