flax-seed

Avatar m tn I haven't used it but this I can tell you! beta-glucan" refers to a class of soluble fibers found in many plant sources. The best documented use of beta-glucan involves improving heart health; the evidence for benefit is strong enough that the FDA has allowed a "heart healthy" label claim for food products containing substantial amounts of beta-glucan.
Avatar f tn You might throw in a couple grams of fish oil daily that might raise the HDL even higher, but it sounds like you are doing great. Keep in mind, the good cholesterol adds to the total cholesterol count, so a high number in your case makes the total a throw-away issue.
Avatar m tn things like freshwater fish, flaxseed meal, walnuts, macadamias, almonds, and pumpkin seeds.
Avatar f tn Is the "flaxseed meal" you speak of come already ground up? I have read that flaxseed does no good unless it's ground up.
Avatar m tn Flaxseed is rich with the plant form of omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, which contain both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities, plus soluble and insoluble fiber. Flaxseed seems to help not only with a person’s cholesterol profile but even in maintaining heart rhythm. Organic grape juice, apples, and other foods that contain pectin help eliminate cholesterol through the gut. Garlic has a mild effect as well.
Avatar n tn Diabetes is a numbers game and it is all about eating/drinking carbohydrates aka CARBS. What are CARBS? Yes, traditional white table sugar is CARBS, but so is flour, rice, potatoes, fruit, and corn to name a few. You are in more danger from flour, rice, and potatoes than you are from a teaspoon full of sugar!!! Can you imagine eating a cup of sugar, teaspoon full by teaspoon full? Yuck.
Avatar n tn When my wife was preparing for an operation, her lab work showed her liver counts to be very high, near 200. The Dr. said, many things eaten could raise these levels. They wanted to know if she had eaten cereal with flaxseed and said flaxseed could have a large effect. I mention this so you'll know if it happens to you.
Avatar n tn I buy the liquid gels and also grind whole flaxseed and mix it into a healthy smoothie drink. (Obviously, the flaxseed is to be taken orally--never directly to the eye!
Avatar f tn A couple of members have mentioned using activated charcoal for the really bad gas. Most gastro doctors tell people to use psyllium fiber, like Metamucil. I have had to use other fibers, like flaxseed meal. It's true that you need to build up slowly how much fiber you use, especially when your system is obviously sensitive already. Like sparkle40, I can't use the wheat bran either. My gastro doctor mentioned Metamucil and the like to me.

Avatar n tn I am a 37 year old female.. I have posted here several times about my recent cholesterol readings... I feel my doctor just took things lightly and feel that perhaps he did not give met he correct information.. My total was 148.. my ldl were 100 and my triglcerides were 52.. my hdl was only 37!!!! 6 years ago my total was i think 176, ldl 98 tri's were around 111 and hdl was 59... what would cause it to go down so much in 6 years...
Avatar m tn You really only need to drop your LDL by 20 points, which is not very much. Do a low fat diet, not empty carbs like breads, sugars and pastas. Add fruits and veggies as well. The easiest way is to cut out fast foods so if you indulge in burgers and fries, stop and that alone will bring your number down. Is there a reason why you don't want to take a statin?
Avatar m tn when you go on Google & study effects of fish oil, it does list reducing PVC's as one of it's possible advantages. I can't really tell that it does. But of course, it should help with cholesterol anyway. I do the "emulsifed" fish oil, & I don't burp it.

Avatar f tn I do alright using flaxseed meal rather than the psyllium based fibers that you mentioned. I can use just a little in water, like the fiber drinks, or just sprinkle a little on my food. It's an actual food product and it has nutritional benefits, like omega 3. I buy the Bob's Red Mill that is available at Trader Joe's, because it's more affordable. It's already ground flaxseed meal. I haven't heard of the Heather's Tummy Fibers, so I'll have to look for that.
Avatar f tn I can relate to some of this, because I have the same kind of IBS that you do. I don't know if I have FMS (I have the symptoms to indicate the strong possibility), but I do have CFS and MCS, so I can relate. We have a special problem, since we have many food sensitivities and allergies. I am sure you are already aware of the gluten intolerance and lactose intolerance issues, since they go with the territory. I was hospitalized with renal failure not too long ago myself.
Avatar m tn There is a gentler fiber that I have found to be less irritating to the gut. This is flaxseed meal. I read of a woman who said that she used it much like one uses Metamucil and drinks it down first thing in the morning and last thing at night and has done so for years. Taking psyllium fiber (the main ingredient in Metamucil) wasn't helpful for her bowel troubles, but the flaxseed meal was. I find it helpful for me, too, but I simply add it directly to whatever I'm eating.
Avatar f tn I have just recently gotten very interested in supplements and ordered some Omega with flaxseed, a cholesterol supplement, vitamin B12 with B complex added, Vitamin D-3, as well as a few others. Do you feel the Omega has and is helping? I'm going to google "full metal jacket stent." I know I've heard of that term before but don't know much about it really. I have 5 Taxus stents. I'm interested to hear a doctor's reply to your question.
