Common Questions and Answers about Fetal development of thyroid

Avatar m tn I have a family history of thyroid disease, and just haven't been feeling right for awhile now. I am about 2 months pregnant and just got some lab test results back: THYROXINE (FREE) 0.8 0.6 - 1.2 ng/dL THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE 1.978 0.400 - 5.000 uIU/mL From my understanding, t4 is supposed to be increased in pregnancy and a low level could cause problems with fetal development. I contacted my doctor, but of course I'm full of anxiety until I get a reply.
Avatar m tn But more importantly, once she does become pregnant, low thyroid hormones will definitely impact the developing fetus. The earliest stages of fetal development is the time when it is most critical for the mother to have sufficient thyroid hormone. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24015847 "Conclusion: Early TH [thyroid hormone] insufficiency from maternal hypothyroidism affects offspring hippocampal development and memory.

Avatar f tn Thyroid meds are not really meds, but replacement of the hormones your body would make if it could. Since they are virtually identical to our own hormones, the meds are almost never harmful. However, the different brand names and generics contain different fillers (inactive ingredients). Some people are sensitive to the fillers and feel better once they switch brands/generics. So if your asthma is flaring, you might ask your doctor to switch brands.
Avatar n tn The brain contains pockets or spaces called ventricles with a spongy layer of cells and blood vessels called the choroid plexus. This is in the middle of the fetal brain. The choroid plexus has the important function of producing a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid produced by the cells of the choroid plexus fills the ventricles and then flows around the brain and the spinal cord to provide a cushion of fluid around these structures.
Avatar f tn Both T3 and T4 look to me like total T3 and total T4. If your lab report doesn't specifically say "free", then it's total. TT3 and TT4 are considered obsolete tests since they measure the total amount of T3/4 in your blood. However, much of that total is bound by protein and unavailable to your cells. Free T3/4 have replaced totals since they tell what's actually available for metabolism.
Avatar f tn I had the same thing, I went to an endocrinologist and they did a sonogram of my thyroid glad that showed it was completely normal. I went back 3 more times for follow up blood work and my levels had stabilized. I'm now 34weeks and my baby girl is fine.
Avatar f tn My very first piece of advice would be to make sure your thyroid meds are adjusted properly and your FT3 and FT4 levels are good before conceiving. Prregnancy and childbirth can strain even a healthy thyroid, and inadequate FT3 and FT4 levels can impact fetal development. Please post the reference ranges for your FT3 and FT4. These are lab specific and have to come from your own lab report. We can comment further when we see your ranges.
Avatar f tn I personally think it's selfish and foolish to drink during pregnancy. Your putting your baby's health at risk and fetal development during the first trimester is crucial. Any alcohol use during pregnancy can result in a child being born with FASD. To me it's not worth the risks.
Avatar f tn The fetal heart undergoes a considerable amount of growth very early in pregnancy. The most critical period of its development is between three and seven weeks after fertilization, when a simple heart tube assumes the shape of a four-chambered heart. In fact, the heart actually begins beating by the 22nd day of life.
Avatar f tn m 6 weeks pregnant at the moment and i thought everything was going find until i got a call from my hospital telling me they needed to schedule me for an earlier appointment because when reviewing my ultrasounds they saw a problem with the fetus development. does anyone have any idea what this can mean? I would really appreciate it if you can help.
Avatar n tn Prior to the next period dates I get all the pregnancy symptoms - temperature, eating extra, tiredness, sleeps, and feelings of fetal development especially when I bend, but still at the end the red robots mess up my hopes. Since after the miscarriage I haven't been getting any regular cycles - 25, 34, 25, 26, 27, 28, n stuff. Even my Periods are no longer regular - now last for 3days max and scanty. How can I conceive soonest pls.
Avatar m tn They do not have any long term studies to show the effects on fetal development. My current dr says the same thing, when pg stay clear of it as possible.
Avatar n tn Lingual thyroid is a defect in fetal development that leaves thyroid tissue (often your only thyroid tissue) at the base of your tongue. At some point in the first month after conception, the tissue is supposed to drop down to the base of the neck. That's the normal location for the thyroid gland. If the thyroid doesn't descend (about 1 in 100,000 cases), it's trapped in a space where it can't function completely normally and doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone.
Avatar n tn s sometimes a factor in miscarriage, and it can impact fetal development negatively. So, you really want your thyroid horomnes in check before you conceive.
Avatar n tn m worried because of my thyroid problem whether I can conceive or not. Also will I be late for my first pregnancy. My TSH level is greater than 75 as per the blood test in India. I have started taking pills Eltroxin from past three months. My question is : 1. Can I plan pregnancy with this TSH? If not, how many months should I hold? 2. If I become pregnant are there any chances of miscarriage? 3. Do my child also will get affected with Thyroid in later years?
Avatar f tn Mine is different, I think, although I see similar elements in your description. I have a congenital heart defect (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome). During fetal development, there are multiple pathways (wires) transmitting the electrical impulse from the atria to the ventricles. At some point during fetal development, these multiple pathways coalesce into one pathway down the middle of the heart. Well, it seems one of my fetal pathways didn't get the message, so I have a renegade wire.
