There really IS a lot of information about glucagon on the web (you can do a Google search and come up with a lot of articles). In a nutshell for those who are reading this note but don't intend to read the articles, glucagon kits are used to treat severe hypoglycemia. Glucagon is injected, and it causes the liver to release emergency stores of sugar. It will only work if the liver HAS emergency stores of sugar, and then will not work again until the liver replenishes the sugar.
Epinephrine is the a hormone and neurotransmiter. It is produced by the adrenal gland an is a "fight-or-flight catecholamine." So is norepinephrine. In biochemistry, the prefix "nor" means that norepinephrine is an analog of epinephrine.
They function quite differently in the body. epinephrine is most commonly thought of in terms of t effect on the sympathetic nervous system - increasing heart rate, increasing blood pressure, hyper alertness, etc.
It balances your hormones, you produces large amount of essential hormones like epinephrine, growth hormone, estrogen, thyroxine, glucagon but the most important hormone in physical activity is the endorphins. Endorphins is an endogenous opioid from the pituitary gland that blocks pain, decreases appetite, creates a feeling of euphoria, and reduces tension and anxiety. For you that means a happy mood.
Last year I lived in a dorm, and as the other person said, I told my RA and roommate exactly how to give me glucagon shots and waht to do if there was ever a problem. I would suggest maybe typing a list of protocol to have in his room in the event of a problem so that anyone can help in an emergency, plus it will give you some peace of mind.
He just had a PEG done on 8/6 so I can try and control his hypoglycemia without all the hospital admissions. Oh, and when I give him Glucagon IM, it barely makes a dent in his sugar level. Last episode he was 36, then after Glucagon he went to 55. Shouldn't it raise his levels more? Does this make sense to anybody? Is there a connection I am missing?
So my suggestion is that the next time he does this, first try to get some juice or a glucose tablet into him OR keep a glucagon kit handy so you can give him glucagon to help him recover (more about glucagon in a moment), and then even before he recovers, quickly do a finger ***** on him to see what his glucose levels are right at that moment. That's really the only way you will know for sure if he is dropping low.
Now, one more suggestion.
It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.
The clonidine suppression test without normetanephrine measurements and the glucagon stimulation test are not sensitive enough to safely exclude phaeochromocytoma in patients with mildly elevated plasma or urine catecholamines."
A number of times, one of the catecholamines or it's inactive metabolite counterparts, normetanephrine or metanephrine, have been above normal range in my own case. The highest level was norepinephrine at 515 (normal lab reference range went up to 399).
It is important that a person with diabetes (I assume your hubby is Type 1, given how low he got) learn about Glucagon and always have a Glucagon kit available bedside. You might ask the endo for an extra kit so that you can practice with one (into an orange) do you'll know the technique when you need it. My hubby was taught to call 911 and then give me a shot of Glucagon while he awaits their arrival.
It *is* terrifying to witness a seizure.
I have had a series of very low episodes at times when under stress from job or from moving with my military spouse, and I frankly PREFER to have him use glucagon rather than trying to get me to drink juice or honey. It is less stressful to all, and I feel much better after glucagon than I do while waiting for the food or drink to digest. It is the most comfortable way to recover for both the patient and the caregiver.
i just had one this past Tuesday where my wife had to give me a glucagon injection to get me out of it and a few years back i had one while driving and lost a leg from injuries and no longer drive because i don't want that to happen again behind the wheel as i was lucky the first time in that it was a sinle car accident.
I am 55, severe obs sleep apnea- non compliance CPAP, now growth hormones came at severe critical low level at stimulation tests// Insuline tolerance test and Glucagon stimulation test done on two different days. already taking Synthroid, for thyroid, belly weight. weakness,tired,confused,blurry,center head pain. sleep is not sound.
cortisol is also not normal with glucagon stimulation test. IGF-1 is low.
Can I be a candidate for growth hormone replacement therapy with immediate effect.
I had to get stitches last night, and was given 5-6 shots of epinephrine and lidocane. I told the intake nurse I was taking synthroid (which I presume implies thyroid problems). I felt a little "unusual" afterward (pounding heart, feeling calm and detached..), and was googling the side effects of the shot.. an article said this:

But it sounds like from what you are saying that it doesn't block the emission of epinephrine, just the action it takes- I'd suggest if you don't hear quickly from your doctor you consult a knowledgeable pharmacist for their opinion.
I had a 2nd trimester miscarriage the day that I had a mole removed at my dermatologist. They used Epinephrine and Xylocaine and when we received the autopsy report it revealed that my baby was perfectly normal and healthy without chromosonal issues prior to him dieing in my womb that day. Has anyone experienced this or known anyone who has? I researched on the web and found many warnings about pregnant women receiving Lidocaine from the dentist but not what they gave me.

So far I always got eye drops without epinephrine/or something equal to epinephrine, but this last eye doctor did not want to use any drops at all. He examined my eyes without dialating them.

It is a serotonin and nor epinephrine reuptake inhibitor. The name of the neurotransmitter is nor epinephrine it is different from epinephrine.
Most of the side effects occur during the period when one is taking the medication. But the important thing to remember is to follow the doctors instructions carefully. To reduce the incidence of side effects it is always started with a low dose and then it is gradually increased.
