Avatar f tn Alzheimer's is a form of dementia. Dementia can be caused by many things like other diseases such as parkinson's, hormones, oxygen deprivation (from low lung function or carotid blockages) or other. Most have slightly different progressions.
Avatar f tn Thank you! I know that bipolar has a genetic link, and without a doubt, my father had an undiagnosed case, as well as, my paternal grandmother. I have heard that Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia are also genetic. It's pretty scary to me at 40 to think I might be like my grandmother and start the downhill slope in 10 years. Luckily, I have gotten the treatment I need for the BP, so it might not happen that soon! BUT, it might! SCARY! Thanks so much!

Avatar m tn B blend can slow dementia At first glance, it's a big win for supplements: Researchers say megadoses of B vitamins can dramatically cut back on the conditions that lead to dementia. But dig a little deeper, and you'll uncover yet another Big Pharma attempt to bully its way into the supplement game. In this case, the researchers used a patented blend of B6, B12 and folic acid, called TrioBe Plus by the Swiss drug company that makes it.
Avatar m tn My mom has dementia and now it has gone so bad that I am thinking of contacting an assisted living centre in Arizona named Prestige Care which is nearby. But I am worried if she will be fine and happy there. Can depression bring on symptoms like those in Alzheimer's disease? As I am new to this I don't know the procedure of adult care home or the best treatment for Alzheimer’s disease dementia? Can anyone share your advice/experiences. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Dementia is not a specific disease. It's an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common dementia type.
Avatar m tn Not exactly what the article said, so let's tamp down the fear a bit. First of all, it didn't say it increases the onset by 25 years. It says Alzheimer's now appears to start 25 years before any signs are noted. No relation there to covid. What has been widely reported by anyone who has been keeping up with the news, some people suffer long-haul covid, and those are the people these docs are concerned about.
Avatar n tn Repeat strokes or death of brain cells caused by blocked arteries can give rise to a condition called vascular dementia. This means that the memory becomes impaired due to the death of these brain cells. The symptoms may be similar to that of alzheimer's disease. Regards.
Avatar f tn My husband got the MRI report today: mild small vessel ischemic change with no evidence of acute infarct. Volume loss in the right temporal lobe likely representing encephalomalcia. There is mild diffuse volume loss with associated mild ventricular prominence. There is more focal prominent volume loss in the right temporal lobe with prominence of the extra-axial space and ex bacuo dilatation of the right temporal horn.
951090 tn?1253316948 I understand the basics of Alzheimer's disease, but I am curious as to why it is typically found in older or elderly adults. I know that as we age our cells change and they can mutate or deteriorate. Since this can happen at any age, I am wondering why dementia disorders are less common in children and young adults. I mean, theorectically, a child could develop Alzheimer's disease, could they not?
Avatar f tn What is the actual physical failure that causes death from Alzheimer's, and how is the failure caused by the disease? I'm just confused as it was my understanding that Alzheimer's was a disease that only affected cognitive function. I don't know what is meant by Alzheimer's being a "cause" of death.
Avatar m tn I have had anxiety and sleep disorder. Even though my doctor prescribed medicine for me, I have been feeling funny taking the prescriptions. Thus, I have been thinking of taking supplement like GABA, L-Theanine, and other natural herbal extracts.... There are many articles online claiming that GABA helps Alzheimer's Disease patients with improvement. HOWEVER, there is one article by Harvard Medical School https://www.health.harvard.
Avatar f tn s disease) In the final stage of this disease, individuals lose the ability to respond to their environment, to carry on a conversation and, eventually, to control movement. Avatar n tn I had a brain mri scan for recurrent 'auras' thought to be due to migraine. The result of the scan came back normal except for a few spots of plaques. I am 50, is this normal? I am concerned that it is indicative of early degeneration associated with dementia.
Avatar m tn There are others that should be reading. They don't always respond. We more readers then we have responders. Hang in you should get more responses. I am just the Community Leader. Your info is NOT correct. Ppl with Alzheimer’s can and do hallucinate. However seeing a neurologist should provide with with better answers. Hallucinations are sensory experiences that seem real to people with Alzheimer's disease, yet they are not really happening.
