Abt 2 months ago cardio doc increased diltiazem to 240mg ER from 120 mg,(for irregular heartbeat) added xarelto 15mg as I had an episode of heart arrythmmia and palpitations. I am also on pravastatin 20 mg. I find diltiazem/xarelto interaction in only one place. Abt 10 days ago, started having diarrhea or several loose bm's per day. If this continues should I call the cardio doc re this problem or go see gastro doc?. I have had pancreatitis in past so have a gastro doc.
I had a brief bout of A-Fib, and the ER put me on 15mg Diltiazem every 6 hrs. My physician a couple of days later bumped that up to 30mg/6hrs. Around a week into taking the drug, I lost most of the sense of taste; sweet, sour, salt. Initially I just had a tiny sense of "savory" as the only thing I could taste. I began to not be able to eat, because everything made me sick to my stomach. I read in the Diltiazem side-effects that this is called "taste perversion".
BP is relatively normal. I take indapmide for that (From my regular doctor). In fact when my cardilolgist put me on diltiazem, he took me off indapamide. That didn't last long. The diltiazem did nothing for my BP. It went back up (Only talking +/- 140/90), so let me add bavk the indapamide. So, that is not an issue. Just the MVP/ diltazem issue.The pulse can stay n the 60's for awhile. At most during the day, in the 80's. (Of course, that is only when the rythym is normal).
I am on another brand/generic calcium channel blocker - Diz..don't recall, but I can check. I take what I think is the maximum does and had some of the symptoms you mention, but none real bad and my body has adjusted.
Swelling of ankles was the the side-effect I most noticed, as did my wife. But it was not noticeable when dressed (a man) and I didn't have trouble putting on my shoes. I discussed with my cardiologist and he recommended I give it more time.
I would definately go on line and google out diltiazem and missed heart beats and the same w. alcohol use w. the drug but just be sure it is either a doc or a pharmaceutical co. that offers you the info not some random person or study...if you have A Fib now is not the time to get creative..........................
I have been diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome. I was on diltiazem xt 120mg. I stopped taking the medicine 12 days ago could it still be in my system and be causing slow heart rate 40-45 during th day.
Is there another therapeutic drug with fewer side effects? My loved one is on two drugs, Crestor and Verapamil...but the fatigue is almost debillatating.
Help....any thoughts. Any successes out there?
Two weeks ago my doctor started me on Diltiazem 120 mg for racing heart. A cardiologist is doing some tests day after tomorrow. I have developed a severe rash that has now reached all of my body and itches like crazy. I am treating it with Benedry capsules and Caladryl lotion. Only tonight discovered it is a side effect of the prescription. Tomorrow I will not take the Diltiazem but meanwhile what should I do?
i am 24 and am now on diltiazem lowest dose. i am very symptomatic to meds. i was on metoprolol and i had bad asthma with it. so recently i was switched. well i am a nursing student ready to graduate and am pretty fond of the heart and conduction, so i am affraid of things like clot formations and the fact that the medicine isnt stopping the flutters. if i up my dose i get very dizzy and feel like i have motion sickness like the floor is moving from under me. its really odd, anywho...
I am currently on 30 mg of diltiazem 3x day and i was wondering how effective is this dose at bring down your blood pressure. and how much would it bring it down. a rough estimate would be great. for i am hoping to come off of this medicine.
My doctor put me on Diltiazem 24 hr. ER 180 mg. It seems that the chest pains are less frequent, but I still get the tight in the chest and breathing issues I had on the beta blocker. Do calcium channel blockers cause lung thightness? My BP was still around 130/90 2 weeks into the Diltiazem. We are checking again when I finish the bottle. Meanwhile, lots of aches and flue like sypmtoms. I always feel sick and tired. I sleep 9 hours a night, but wake up with anxiety attacks around midnight.
Now I take Diltiazem (another CCB) without much trouble. A heart rate of 86 at night is still pretty brisk. Mine is normally 60 at rest, in the low 70's when I'm up moving around. And that was before Diltiazem. No, I'm not athletic. I'm an old pudgy lady.
I just started taking Diltiazem for my PSVT rapid heart beat. It is a little early to know if it is doing any good, although I had an episode after starting. What has been your experience with this drug as a treatment for PSVT (my blood pressure is normal)? What other drugs worked better for you? [I am a 76 year old male in otherwise good health.
I have been taking metoprolol and diltiazem for sixteen months and initially the medications brought the SVTs under control. Fourteen months ago I started coughing blood and experiencing chest congestion. This took my attention off any heart issues and sent me on a long search for the cause of the bleeding. After many tests and visits with various specialists I never did get the answer. The bleeding resolved itself after 10 months (last October) and has not reappeared.
Hi ! I have been taking Flecainide 100mg twice daily for 9 years for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation. Since taking it I have noticed a small amount of hair loss each time I wash my hair but I still have my hair - it hasn't thinned or anything. I did notice fatigue for a while after starting the drug but I think once my body got used to it that passed. Hope all goes well for you.
Atenolol can and often does have an additive affect when taken along with other beta blocking meds.
In my case, even though the Atenolol was only 25 mg, it was enough to cause several heart pauses (flatlines) of 3 to 4 second durations detected via an event recorder.

My blood pressure is perfect and was perfect prior to my heart surgery. The only reason I am on them is because I had a large tumor in my heart and once I had my open heart surgery I developed post-op SVT, afib, a-flutter and my heart rate has skyrocketed over 200 beats per minute several times.
Two weeks ago my Cardio doctor changed my medication from Cardizem LA to Diltiazem CD. I know it's the generic brand of Cardizem. Anyway he raised my dosage from 240 mg. to 300 mg. For a whole week I had some terrible side effects. I blacked out once while sitting at my computer and then I came close to blacking out on a daily basis. I also felt off balance. I ended up going to my primary doctor, not for this, but for something else. I guess it was a follow up appointment.
t use Verapamil but am doing fine on Diltiazem, also a CCB. It takes 2 - 4 weeks for it to all settle down, initial side effects of starting the medication as well as whatever benefit you'll get. I still feel my ectopics and my tachy bursts but overall I feel pretty good. They don't seem to happen as often and my chest pains are virtually gone.
I think you have to weigh the significant risks involving ablation and the location of your accessory pathway vs. drug therapy and living with your condition. How often do your events occur? Are you able to convert them yourself by some means; Valsalva, etc.? At 30 years old, time is on your side. Perhaps a new technique in the next decade will make your particular situation less risky.
Verapamil is a serious, Class IV anti arrhythmic that is indicated for SVT.
I also take Diltiazem for my heart issues and it helps quite a bit with my Raynauds. Since Diltiazem helps relax blood vessels I can see why it helps with Raynauds as well.
Are you talking about small vessels spasms in the heart? The medication should help with that. I know I have had periods of chest pain upon exertion, also some times just random and the D. seems to have calmed those down considerably.

he sent me back to my regular doctor who at first put me on metoprolol but I had a bit of chest pain with that drug as well as nightmares. Now he has me on diltiazem but since I've been on that my heart rate has gone back up (the metoprolol was keeping my heart rate down).
What do you all think I should do??? This is completely debilitating - I have not worked in 2 weeks. I can't go for walks, can't hang out socially. I feel "off" all the time.
I am taking metoprolol 50mg, it could be side effects from this drug? I had blood tests done yesterday and they are find...I feel very weak, not hungry at all, in the mornings until mid afternoon and then I recover a bit until the next day that I feel the same again...do not know what to do...the doctor cut the dose to 25mg, but I still feel weak. Any help is highly appreciated.
First time, adenosine failed twice to bring down 180+ pulse. Diltiazem given, and worked. Sent home with extended-release 120mg diltiazem. Experienced breakthrough arrhythmias and eventual return to tachycardia 170bpm that lasted 8 hours before heading to the ER again. Given fast-acting diltiazem 60mg, which seems to be working so far, although I'm still experiencing arrhythmias. Cardiologist preliminarily diagnosed AVNRT and recommended ablation asap.
