Diltiazem and verapamil

Common Questions and Answers about Diltiazem and verapamil

tiazac

Avatar n tn It is up to the doctor. I'm not sure why you would take both verapamil and diltiazem since they are both CCB's. I'm going to assume the doctor is prescribing this and you're not just going to find the med and add it yourself. Ask the doctor about how the medications work and why you need both.
Avatar f tn Be careful taking diltiazem (lisinopril). I was on it for medium high blood pressure for 5 years and finally stopped taking it because it had caused deep depression, not to feelings of suicide though. It seemed to build up, so be on the lookout for feelings of not caring and hopelessness. Now I'm on Verapamil and am doing OK except for the ankle swelling. Tried another CB'er (Cartia XT or Cardizem) and had the same edema effect.
Avatar m tn Hi.... I am a 30 y/o female who was dx with psvt in july 2010. My svt was seen on a 48 hr event monitor and I had rates of 188 from simple activity such as climbing my steps. My EP/Cardio attempted an ablation on 7/15/10. They weren't able to sustain the svt long enough to ablate and discovered that my accesorry pathway is up against my SA node so I run the risk of needing a pacemaker if the svt is ablated.
1622431 tn?1299070442 m put on beta blockers, that really helps treating PACs that occur with adrenaline. Calcium blockers like diltiazem and verapamil can be effective too, it's a bit trial and error, it all depends on what's causing them. If you have anxiety and somewhat elevated heart rate too, I guess beta blockers are best. The best cure is, however, to accept PACs as the completely benign phenomenon it is.
Avatar f tn HI,I went back to my cardologist today because of my shortness of breath and chest pain and dizziness,,,he showed me the pictures of my stress test and he explained that the small portion that does not get adequate blood when stressed is not a serious thing,,,,but my heart rate problem,he gave me Verapamil sr to try this time 120 mg i have tried Bystolic and Atenol they made me feel very strange im so afraid this new med will drop my heart rate to much,,,,sometimes at night my heart rate is 86
Avatar f tn But Diltiazem has worked well for me once I got past the first few weeks of adjustment, mostly headache and some fatigue. Ask your doctor whether the swelling will ease up or if you have to switch.
Avatar m tn I took verapamil for a couple of months (for PVC's) and it made things worse, so I went back to my BB but I can understand if you can not take that particular RX. It's prob worth a try, tho.
Avatar f tn There are several other CCB out there, and if your symptoms are much different between the diltiazem and verapamil, perhaps another will work. Good luck.
Avatar f tn The Heart Rhythm Society did a few randomized trials to assess the efficacy of calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers and digoxin in SVT. A comparison of verapamil, propranolol and digoxin showed equivalent efficacy in a small group of patients. However, in general calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers are preferred to digoxin. Digoxin has been around for a long time! I used Digoxin over 50 years ago for my PSVT, and my recollection was that it did little to prevent episodes.
Avatar f tn Hormones like estrogen (in birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy) and testosterone Blood pressure medicines called calcium channel blockers (such as nifedipine, amlodipine, diltiazem, felodipine, and verapamil) Steroids Antidepressants, including MAO inhibitors (such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine) and tricyclics (such as nortriptyline, desipramine, and amitriptyline) Home Care Elevate your legs above your heart while lying down.
Avatar n tn Each time I stayed in sinus rhythm but the heart rate went up to 126 at the highest, and this was while I was on a calcium channel blocker, diltiazem, started by the internist who caught the rapid heart rate. The cardiologist switched me to verapamil and so far I haven't had any more episodes. I have kept track of my heart rate and BP for the last two months to see if there was a trend and because I'm trained as a scientist and we thrive on data!
Avatar m tn Not all of us respond the same to the same medications. The indapamide worked better for you than the dilitazem so it only makes sense to stay w/the indapamide and forego the diltiazem since your doctor obviously didn't consider the indapamide and diltiazem a good combinantion. I understand about uninsured doctor visits. We lost our family doctor of some 30 years and got a rude shock when we started doctor shopping!!! From a standard $35 office call to a $150 initial office call!!!!!
Avatar f tn Cardizem (aka Diltiazem) is a calcium channel blocker, good for high BP, angina and some arrhythmia problems. I take it and it does a decent job of controlling my atrial tachy and chest pains. Also helpful for people with Raynauds. Best thing is to google the name of the medication and you'll find out all kinds of info: how it's used, side effects, etc.
Avatar f tn Treatment for coronary artery spasm is with calcium channel blockers (nifedipine, diltiazem, verapamil, etc) and nitrates (nitroglycerine). Hope this helps, and thanks for sharing. If you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Take care, and I wish you well going forward.
Avatar m tn i think the atenolol is causing me some side effects and i have and allergies and it might be making it worse and also want to start taking allergy shots but heard its not a good idea while on beta blockers. im looking for a list or names of a few calcium channel blockers that can also help my symptoms so i can talk to my dr about changing my meds..do calcium channel blockers have less side effects then beta blockers or are they safer?..
706949 tn?1228923298 I just came across and article that says "Adenosine and other AV node blockers should be avoided in atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter with WPW or history of it; this includes adenosine, diltiazem, verapamil, other calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers." And my son is on atenolol for WPW. Should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn However, amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker whose primary effect is more peripherally acting rather (as compared to the non-dihydropyridine CCB, i.e. diltiazem or verapamil, which are more centrally acting). Beta blockers is a proven medication that improves survival in those who have suffered a heart attack, have coronary artery disesase, or heart failure. If there are indications for this, then it is usually a good idea to be on one.
Avatar m tn Hello, last month I saw my cardiologist and he had determined that I have AVNRT. So we finally switched from Atenolol 50mg after 10 years of use, to Propafenone 150mg x2 a day. The Propafenone didn't do much for me, felt every heart beat, every skip and elevated heart rate when doing something as minor as walking from room to room. When on Atenolol it would hide the strong heart beats. Now today I started on Verapamil 240mg SR once a day.
Avatar n tn I have been on Diltiazem for over 45 day's. And have tken Verapamil for over 4 years, I just can't believe their is nothing to do for this ever day i have between 10 to 100. Lately it is getting worse I feel like the one that isn't going to stop is going to happen real soon.
Avatar n tn I was put on Verapamil at first and ended up in ER with chest pain, SOB and general weakness. Now I can take Diltiazem (similar but different) with no trouble. Two medications seem like a lot of drugs to control some atrial tachy. Can you be more specific as to what type of atrial tach you have: PSVT, a-flutter, a-fib? How fast and how long do the episodes last?
343006 tn?1314446471 from Gerd another side effect from this drug and verapamil as well - to internal shakes and jitters no sleep ! and nightmares going on when I did sleep for 15 to 25mins at a time ! sitting upright .. my left foot swelled twice its size last night and today as well. I have stopped taking the Bystolic totaly as I was on 2.5 mg daily. small dose its unbeliveable what happend. And im wondering what was in my cardio doctors head ,when he gave this bystolic drug !
Avatar m tn I just started taking Diltiazem for my PSVT rapid heart beat. It is a little early to know if it is doing any good, although I had an episode after starting. What has been your experience with this drug as a treatment for PSVT (my blood pressure is normal)? What other drugs worked better for you? [I am a 76 year old male in otherwise good health.
Avatar m tn Medical therapy with verapamil and beta-blockade may improve symptoms. Diuretics should be avoided, as they reduce the intravascular volume of blood, decreasing the amount of blood available to distend the left ventricular outflow tract, leading to an increase in the obstruction to the outflow of blood in the left ventricle. Patients without LVOT obstruction constitute the majority of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

1704227 tn?1307475144 The one which finally worked was Diltiazem. I took 60mg in the morning and 60mg in the evening and after 24hours it stopped. There are some side effects with CCB with some people, as with all meds, and I had to stop it after 3 weeks because it gave me Gum issues. I was nicely surprised (as was my Doctor) to find my spasms had actually stopped even when I came off the med. It hasn't returned since then.
Avatar n tn had some bad reactions to it and ended up in ER. More recently they gave me Diltiazem and it was fine. Just the usual couple of weeks to adjust to it (some fatigue, headaches, dizziness).
343006 tn?1314446471 it interacts and dose not help at all. but now im only on 3 meds diltiazem and maxzide and bystolic 2.5 mg daily . same old thing !! no change at all....plus Im getting a few not normal heart beats.. that the cardio said will stop soon as it adjusts to my body .. I say B/S !! I just did research about this new medication and found its another ccb cal channel blocker ! so how in the world can it change things / it cant !! im back where I started ,only with more problems than before .
