Diltiazem and atenolol

Common Questions and Answers about Diltiazem and atenolol

tiazac

Avatar m tn Atenolol can and often does have an additive affect when taken along with other beta blocking meds. In my case, even though the Atenolol was only 25 mg, it was enough to cause several heart pauses (flatlines) of 3 to 4 second durations detected via an event recorder. Regarding the interaction between Diltiazem and Tambocor, this is from drugs.com: "Using diltiazem together with flecainide can increase the effects of either medication.
182884 tn?1259312906 One of the side effects of atenolol is low bp and cold extremities (not really a good choice for people who are already suffering Raynaud's syndrom). Also, since the atenolol wasn't addressing your major concern of angina discomfort, your doctor likely identified the problem to be that adrenaline triggers may not be the cause of your pain. Diltiazem CD is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is required by your heart muscles to contract.
Avatar n tn Apparently it was already 130 before I started running So I went to the dr. yesterday and was prescribed Atenolol (25mg). Is that suitable for someone who already has such a low resting heart rate? I only took my first dose last night and haven't noticed anything negative yet. I'm concerned about any negative influence on my training and also about it lowering my already low resting heart rate to perhaps a dangerous level.
177337 tn?1310059899 I just got back from my internist. She is truly a wonderful compasionate doctor that really wants to help keep me as healthy as possible. Of course all my blood tests came back perfect except that I was low in Vitamin D. I was actualy hoping something was off so that I had a reason for the increase in these damn episodic pvc's that have been lasting for hours at a time. She wants me to try a channel blocker called diltiazem on an "as needed" basis.
706949 tn?1228923298 I just came across and article that says "Adenosine and other AV node blockers should be avoided in atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter with WPW or history of it; this includes adenosine, diltiazem, verapamil, other calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers." And my son is on atenolol for WPW. Should I be concerned?
Avatar n tn What kind of side effects is she having? I lasted on atenolol a whole 4 days and then told me doctor she had to find something else. I was only getting a few hours of sleep a night, plus is made me feel asthmatic and had episodes of Raynaud's syndrome as mentioned above. Since I live in Iowa (low of -24 degrees the other day), it was a side effects that really bothered me. Now I am on 240 mg of Diltiazem and no side effects but it is not controlling the rapid pulse rate very well.
Avatar m tn Hi, I am on Verapimil and I noticed a difference within 2 days of using it. I was really tired and dizzy the first 4 days, but I am getting used to it.
Avatar f tn The cardiologist then called in a new med called Verapamil ER 180mg yesterday after the horrible day before with the Diltiazen. Here is the thing. The Diltiazem seemed to induced tachycardia and worsened as the day went on and by evening i was in bad shape, but the Verapamil seems to be doing nothing..not making it worse but it's not controlling the tachycardia symptoms either?
Avatar f tn I like the longer half life of the atenolol and my cardiologist agreed I could change, and wrote the prescription. He did not offer any comment on why he had never suggested I give atenolol a try. I worked with this nurse by telephone to get the new prescription. I take both the BB and the CCB to lower my heart rate as I am in permanent atrial fibrillation. If you do not have a problem with a too high HR and or blood pressure, I do not understand why you are on the medications.
Avatar m tn Any ideas how I can control the A-Fib without all these bad side-effects? Am tempted to dump the Diltiazem and go back to low dose of beta-blocker and hope the nasty side-effects won't be so severe with only 25 mg/day. Feeling like a guinea-pig with an out-of-control heart at this point. Also, is it OK to take 1/2 - 1 mg of Lorazepam during an A-fib episode? It seems to help slow down the racing. Any suggestions/advice very welcome. Thanks!
612551 tn?1450022175 s Physician Assistant (PA) concerning my change about 3 weeks ago from 100 (or more) Metoprolol a day to taking 50 mg Metoprolol and 240 mg Diltiazem XR (Diltia XT) a day. The former is Beta Blocker (BB) and the latter a Calcium Channel Blocker (CCB). Both are long/extended/slow (whatever) release and are often prescribed for taking once every 24 hours.
Avatar m tn I just started taking Diltiazem for my PSVT rapid heart beat. It is a little early to know if it is doing any good, although I had an episode after starting. What has been your experience with this drug as a treatment for PSVT (my blood pressure is normal)? What other drugs worked better for you? [I am a 76 year old male in otherwise good health.
Avatar m tn t take care of the high HR. I take both Metoprolol and Diltiazem, 50 mg and 240 mg respectively. They seem to work well together. Maybe you can take a lower dose of Metoprolol along with the Diltiazem, perhaps at a higher dose. Your post implies you nightmares are gone now that you are off of the BB... the CCB may also have that side effect.
1153421 tn?1262132684 THANK YOU FOR THE COMMENTS. IT HELPS TO KNOW PEOPLE CARE AND I AM NOT CRAZY.
Avatar n tn had some bad reactions to it and ended up in ER. More recently they gave me Diltiazem and it was fine. Just the usual couple of weeks to adjust to it (some fatigue, headaches, dizziness).
Avatar f tn I, too, ruminated over the finality of it all. I was on a boat load of meds (tikyson, diltiazem, atenolol) and they were not doing the trick. I already had a pacer so it did not have to endure that part of the procedure. When I finally made the decision, I was ready to proceed. I am glad I had it done as it has cut down on the recurrent AFib by quite a lot. I feel so much better. Life on a battery is not bad at all. I went to a large teaching hospital 2.5 hrs away for all of my work.
Avatar n tn When I returned home my doctor switched me to Flecainide and Atenolol and it has worked well. I wish you the best of luck.
Avatar m tn i think the atenolol is causing me some side effects and i have and allergies and it might be making it worse and also want to start taking allergy shots but heard its not a good idea while on beta blockers. im looking for a list or names of a few calcium channel blockers that can also help my symptoms so i can talk to my dr about changing my meds..do calcium channel blockers have less side effects then beta blockers or are they safer?..
Avatar n tn It really depends on what you need. If this has been prescribed for you, and you are uncertain about it, then you can always ask your doctor for more clarification. It really just all depends on your individual circumstances.
Avatar m tn I've had high BP since early 20s. Never ate salt, excercised to keep weight normal. In early 40s had to start taking medication. For the past 20 years I've taken about 15 different medications from doctor to doctor. Everybody knows the answer but my BP never is 120/80 except right after taking meds. 6 hours later it will be 170/102 an dhigher by the hour. Then when I go back to the dr, he/she says, "Hmmm it's high, we should keep an eye on that.
394017 tn?1255014532 The last of these ( inappropriate sinus tachycardia or IST) is something it has been addressed here in the forums many times, and is usually treated by medications such as diltiazem or via an EP study with RF ablation.
Avatar n tn I am currently on 30 mg of diltiazem 3x day and i was wondering how effective is this dose at bring down your blood pressure. and how much would it bring it down. a rough estimate would be great. for i am hoping to come off of this medicine.
Avatar m tn I have suffered with taking diltiazem(180 mg ER) AND metoprolol (50 mg ER) for atril fibrillation for the past two and a half years. The side effects have been debilitating.. Both drugs have the same side effects and together and one or the other or both create what I can only describe as chaotic turbulence in my chest and pain in my left arm when the second drug kicks in.. My cardiolgist now wants me to add a blood thinner (xarelto) to my meds menu.
