Common Questions and Answers about Dilantin and liver

dilantin

Avatar f tn Does prednisone effect dilantin and lamictal levels? I've been on dilantin and lamictal for over 5 years for seizures. I'm being tested for autoimmune hepatitis, I just had a liver biopsy. I don't want to take a chance on having a seizure.
Avatar n tn The neurologist figured the Topamax just was not working and then put him on Keppra. (He was still taking 1 dilantin and weaned off that dilantin just before going on Keppra) I had him wean off the Topamax really slow, much slower than the neurologist wanted at first but neuro. gave us his ok to wean off slow. He also weaned on Keppra at a slow dosage. The Keppra worked ok and then he had a few other seizures, one he actually ended up w/ a compression fracture in his back.
Avatar f tn I have researched and spoken with my doctor about it and was told that after taking Dilantin for so long the liver, for the lack of a better way of describing it, builds up a tolerance to the medication and hypermetabolize it. This causes a low level but is often blamed on non-compliance. I guess the solution is to change the medication regimen to something easier on the liver.
Avatar f tn Try something else. Elevated Dilantin levels can cause inability to walk, liver and kidney damage. 40 years seems like a long time on the same med.
Avatar f tn i just started taking dilantin and im 4 weeks late for my peiod and not pregnant
Avatar m tn My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.
7486852 tn?1410352184 My new neurologist wants me to try depakote after keppra, dilantin, and dilantin and topamax together have failed. They did not control my seizures and I had horrible side effects. I have been using my medical marijuana which my neurologist never had anything bad to say about it just wants me to try another pill as well. I'm worried about the side effects and whether they will work when these others haven't..
1060231 tn?1338390135 According to a government website concerning this sort of thing, while it depends on how bad the overdose was, any coma, and so forth, normally a person has full recovery with no complications, other than the liver might suffer from the overload. Your dizziness and tremors are probably because of being so knocked out for so long, and also just being in the hospital for a while can weaken a person.
Avatar f tn i started taking dilantin and im late for my period almost 4 weeks.

2015036 tn?1332997788 My doctor wanted me to start with the Dilantin first, but then I read that bone-thinning and excess facial hair can be the some of the side effects. (So, I'm going with Tegretol.) I had no idea about the risk of leukemia! Are you okay?
3921209 tn?1348605095 I would recommend consulting your Neurologist. Together, you and your Neurologist can weigh the pros and cons of taking Dilantin or possibly another medication.

Dilantin Withdrawal Symptoms The most significant Dilantin withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Dilantin can increase your risk of seizures These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control.
Avatar m tn They said she was having seizures based on her low Dilantin levels. The gave her two injections of Dilantin, she seemed fine and they sent her home. Now she seems fine again, although a little weak, dizzy, and tired, but pretty good for having three back to back episodes. We went to a follow up appointment with her general doctor on Monday. He again insisted it was related to her cholesterol.
Avatar m tn Right now I am actually on Keppra and Topamax and they have both kept me seizure free for over 3+ years and I have no side effects. My memory isn't that great but I'm not sure I can blame the drugs. The two of those as a combo, for me, are wonderful!
Avatar f tn it can also cause nystagmus, signs of cerebellar problems like ataxia. Apart from these it can also cause swollen gums and lips and easy bruising and bleeding. Hope this helps!
Avatar m tn Then in February of 2019 I had a fasting liver blood test and my AST and ALT levels came back mildly elevated again. My doctor sent me for a sonogram of my abdomen which came back normal. He then suggested I cut back on alcohol and repeat a non fasting liver blood test in 3 months. A month later in March of 2019 I called the doctors office and expressed concern that being I’m a genetic carrier of hemochromatosis I’m concerned that my iron levels have not been checked for about a year.
Avatar n tn I took 2 old, and 1 new for about a month, then 2 new and 1 old, and am now on 3 new dilantin 100mg. every day. I have been on this for about 2 weeks, and I have not had any problem at all. I do feel kinda nervous about it, though, and never leave home without my medical card in my wallet. (something I never even had to think about with the old dilantin). How about you? Are you on the new capsules? If so, how are you doing?
Avatar n tn 3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.
Avatar n tn Two meta-analyses (an analytic study combining the results of several clinical trials) done by Sirven, et al (2004) and Tremont-Lukats, et al (2008) showed no benefit to giving anti-epileptic drugs in general, and Dilantin in particular, to patients with brain tumors in order to prevent an initial seizure. Your husband may have an option not to take Dilantin since there's no difference in outcome. You can check out the articles yourself: www.mayoclinicproceedings.
1924139 tn?1322798705 From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.
