Dilantin and ggt

Common Questions and Answers about Dilantin and ggt

dilantin

Avatar m tn The GGT test helps to detect liver and bile duct injury both ALP and GGT are elevated in disease of the bile ducts and in some liver diseases, but only ALP will be elevated in bone disease. If the GGT level is normal in a person with a high ALP, the cause is most likely bone disease. GGT can also be used to screen for chronic alcohol abuse (it will be elevated in about 75% of chronic drinkers).
Avatar f tn ve recently had another set of blood tests (after being taken to hospital after a another seizure )which are, ALP 384 (258) , GGT 615 (292), ALT 155 (82) and ASP 66 (56), up from the month prior (see the figures in brackets). I have been on Dilantin now for three weeks. Would this new medication be the result of the elevation in one month. Additionally I have noticed swelling of my feet and hands, bloating and very pale coloured faeces.

3165168 tn?1343857471 Both ALP and GGT are elevated in disease of the bile ducts and in some liver diseases, but only ALP will be elevated in bone disease. If the GGT level is normal in a person with a high ALP, the cause is most likely bone disease. The GGT test is sometimes used to help detect liver disease and bile duct obstructions. It is usually ordered in conjunction with or as follow up to other liver tests such as ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin.
2015036 tn?1332997788 My doctor wanted me to start with the Dilantin first, but then I read that bone-thinning and excess facial hair can be the some of the side effects. (So, I'm going with Tegretol.) I had no idea about the risk of leukemia! Are you okay?
3921209 tn?1348605095 I would recommend consulting your Neurologist. Together, you and your Neurologist can weigh the pros and cons of taking Dilantin or possibly another medication.
Avatar f tn While some doctors use it in all people they suspect of having liver disease, others use it only to help explain the cause of other changes or if they suspect alcohol abuse.(!) For example, both ALP and GGT are elevated in disease of the bile ducts and in some liver diseases, but only ALP will be elevated in bone disease. If the GGT level is normal in a person with a high ALP, the cause is most likely bone disease.
Avatar n tn At the same time she sent me for liver function tests. I went for the results and all was fine except my GGT was 93. (I do drink regularly). She asked me to wait 1 month and go again, which I did. I received a letter from her today asking me to fast from midnight to 9am and then go for further tests (this time not GGT) but liver profile, FBC, Lipid profile, glucose, fe studies and Hep B&C serology.

Avatar f tn my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly. my neuro told me dilantin does slow your thinking and leaves you in a fog.
Avatar m tn Right now I am actually on Keppra and Topamax and they have both kept me seizure free for over 3+ years and I have no side effects. My memory isn't that great but I'm not sure I can blame the drugs. The two of those as a combo, for me, are wonderful!
Avatar f tn it can also cause nystagmus, signs of cerebellar problems like ataxia. Apart from these it can also cause swollen gums and lips and easy bruising and bleeding. Hope this helps!
Avatar n tn I took 2 old, and 1 new for about a month, then 2 new and 1 old, and am now on 3 new dilantin 100mg. every day. I have been on this for about 2 weeks, and I have not had any problem at all. I do feel kinda nervous about it, though, and never leave home without my medical card in my wallet. (something I never even had to think about with the old dilantin). How about you? Are you on the new capsules? If so, how are you doing?
Avatar n tn 3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.
Avatar n tn Two meta-analyses (an analytic study combining the results of several clinical trials) done by Sirven, et al (2004) and Tremont-Lukats, et al (2008) showed no benefit to giving anti-epileptic drugs in general, and Dilantin in particular, to patients with brain tumors in order to prevent an initial seizure. Your husband may have an option not to take Dilantin since there's no difference in outcome. You can check out the articles yourself: www.mayoclinicproceedings.
1924139 tn?1322798705 From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.
542332 tn?1214592336 My neurosurgeon has me changing from neurontin to dilantin and I think the dilantin may be helping; my pain level has decreased yesterday and today. I will see him again on July 7 and hopefully I will be able to report a good response to the dilantin. If the drugs do not work then he wants to try injection of glycerol. I will post again after my next visit with my neurosurgeon.
