Dental lidocaine and breastfeeding

Common Questions and Answers about Dental lidocaine and breastfeeding

lidoderm

Avatar n tn I am a 25 year old female and I had a seizure while having dental work done about 3 weeks ago. I had been given lidocaine and nitrous oxide. Following the appointment, I went to a neurologist and had a CT scan and an MRI done. Both showed no brain abnormalities. I had eclampsia 4 years ago and had seizures which resulted in the early delivery of my child. Aside from my seizures 4 years ago, I had no previous history of seizure disorder.
Avatar n tn Normally we aspirate the needle/syringe prior to injection. That's how we prevent intravascular injections of lidocaine. Otherwise it would directly travel up to the brain and can cause seizures or other symptoms such as restlessness, disorientation, etc. There are several possibilities in regards to the seizure. It may be due to an intravascular injection although from my understanding, the seizure would occur more rapidly since its goes directly to the brain quickly.
Avatar n tn I would feel a whole lot better without using any anesthetic during the procedure since I had a terrible experience back in 1989 when I was given a skin test for Lidocaine and Meprivacaine? both WITHOUT EPINEPHRINE,YES,WITHOUT EPINEPHRINE and I made sure of that before the skin test. They had to discontinue the Lidocaine because of heart side effects. But they finished with the other one and they thought that everything was fine and sent me home..The next day,BOOM! they hit with a vengence..P.
Avatar f tn t have any dental care aside from routine cleanings while pregnant and if in an emergency, you should only do it after the first trimester but im only five weeks. Has anyone had lidocain used during the first trimester and been OK? Or had wisdom teeth removed? I don't want to hurt my little one but I can't handle the pain on top of all the pregnancy symptoms, Its just to much. Thank you in advance.
383138 tn?1314167773 I just dont know much about the lidocaine and why it affected my heart that way before from just a dental injection. And since this is IV infusion of it, that would probably be alot worse. Thanks again for your reply, and I will keep you all updated.
Avatar n tn Hello, My sister needs extensive dental work i.e. root canals and fillings and crowns. She is a heart patient and we are wondering if Lidocaine, EPI, or any of the 'caines' are safe for dental work in heart patients? We do not want to start an arrythmia attack. Any safe meds? Thanks much.
1571533 tn?1322943509 Hey. I went to my PCP yesterday and he gave me a LIDODERM, a lidocaine patch, to try and help with the pain in my neck -he thinks if that calms down so will the migraines.. theyve been everyday constantly for well over a month and a half, and no meds help.. nor do therapeutic methods i have here at home.. Has anyone here used it before? And did it help? I tried to use it last night but it wouldnt stick to my neck.
Avatar n tn I understand about anatomic variations and fully believe this seizure was caused by lidocaine essentially hitting a vein and numbing my girls' brain and not her tooth; BUT, 1)This is apparently a 'rare' event, How often does it occur and does she have an increased (any?)chance of this event happening again? Or the same chance as everybody else? 2) Is she prone to seizures and this event "set her off"? 3) She still needs this lower molar filled, now what? Other drugs?
Avatar f tn No u will be fine im a dental hygienist lots of girls get teeth pulled ur baby is formed u will be fine I promise its risky if u were in first trimester... and if u keep.tooth u can get infection and worst the pain it gives u...
Avatar n tn ve posted anything on this scary situation that I am now facing regarding a severe dental infection and the risky treatment that I must endure to get rid of it... I've put off a tooth extraction that was needed way back in the late 80's because of a very bad reaction to a skin test involving Lidocaine and Mepricaine both WITHOUT Ephinepherine( I'm not sure of the spelling?
Avatar f tn If you're on local anesthetic its ok because it's the same freezing they use for cavities and what not. So just not getting put under because dental offices don't have the machines to monitor baby.
Avatar f tn U can go to dentist have everything a non preg person can have except they have to give u lidocaine versus novicane get double shielded and get "permission slip" from obgyn good luck hun.
Avatar f tn I didnt know i was pregnant and i had an MRI and steriod injection. Furthermore, most dental work is safe and a coke zero is nothing.
Avatar n tn For the first time in 37 years, two weeks ago when I received regular dental anesthetic my heart raced and I started having palpitations. It passed of course in a few minutes and when I went in yesterday for a root canal I asked for the anesthetic without epi. The first shot was fine, but the second injection sill caused my heart to pound hard, my chest felt shallow and made me feel a little panicy. It passed and the 3rd injection did the same.
419964 tn?1333301906 Dental work is safe, and my ob said with the lead apron X-rays were ok. My dentist was cautious though and skipped the X-rays. One important thing none of these other smart ladies mentioned, if you have a procedure done make sure they use a lidocaine or pain reliever that doesn't have epinephrine in it. Bad for baby and your heart. Also I agree with the others, double check with your obgyn about the heart risk. Never hurts to call and they are used to it. Good luck!
Avatar m tn t even tell the person who found me what my name was) and also visual disturbances ( everything had trails and ghosting). But the Lidocaine patches were wonderful. Now they are gone and I feel like crying all the time. Is there any help for me? I can't afford the patches without insurance helping. Is there something else that might help? If it's approved for posthepatic pain why not my kind of pain? It has to be very similar. Any help will be welcome.
Avatar n tn What would you expect when all around me (and likely most non-dental professionals on this board) all that was said by several oral surgeons and dentists that they were using "novocaine?" Fine, you're a dental expert. That's great. I'm going to recommend again that you start a post informing everyone going forward the proper usage of the word "novocaine" (and I'm still puzzled as to why you picked out MINE to comment on.) I did have a great day, thanks!
Avatar n tn i had a lidocaine shot too for a different procedure and I have been having the same proble as well, over the sumer everyday I would get a palpitating feeling in my chest and wondered if it has something to do with that. I do remember when I had the procedure my heart was racing. If you found anything out please let me know- Thanks!
Avatar f tn I get Nitrus Oxide. I have an extreme anxiety towards any dental work. Yes, I've had the scraping. They should numb you with an injection in your mouth, like for a filling. And as I said, I get nitrus oxide. I don't remember being overly sore afterward if that's what you're asking. Most of our pain medications make our mouths dry. Horrible for teeth. There are dental rinses for dry mouth. Also OTC rinses you can use. Some fluoride treatments will dry out your mouth.
Avatar f tn I work in a dental office and you can go to the dentist. What we do is used the safest local anesthesia and give you antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy which are usually the same medications that we would give to breastfeeding mothers. However since you're already 36wks pregnant it might be better to go after the baby is born if you're not in intense pain but sometimes cracked teeth come out very easily.
Avatar n tn I also found out from my Primary Dr and Cardiologist that that Lidocaine and Septhacaine people with heart conditions can't take for because it can cause a heart attack and being I do not numb I have to be put under for the tooth extractions. Make sure you tell your dentist about your heart condition and he will tell you to get a medical clearance first because he will not touch you.
1817071 tn?1366228243 I have had a ton of dental work done and I remind my dentist every time no epinephrine. Also something to be aware of...if you have a tooth crowned when they are doing the crown prep they use a string coated in epinephrine to retract your gum prior to making the impressions. It is equivalent to about 3 shots with epi. They have string that does not have the epinephrine so be sure to remember to ask if you are having a tooth crowned.
Avatar f tn s a combination of benedryl liquid, maalox and lidocaine, you swish it over the sores and it numbs and also heals them up faster. But you need to see a dentist or doctor for that. There are pastes in the dental isles for cankor sores that you could use to cover the sore and numb it, Canka makes one and I'm sure there are others.
