973741 tn?1342342773 I think the problem is with the methylization process, so with B12 the supplement needed is methyl B12. But the genetic deficiency can also be folate or B6. The three are in balance with one another and are often implicated in the same things. The difficulty is, while the genetic defect is found in lots of people, it isn't thought to have an effect on very many of them and that can be a problem because supplementing with methylated Bs can be a problem if that's not your issue.
Avatar m tn Folate is trapped in an unusable form without vitamin B12 which is why low or deficient folate is a common finding with vitamin B12 deficiency. Homocysteine is elevated due to deficiency of vitamin B12 and folate. Elevated homocysteine increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. The MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume) and MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration) are decreased in various conditions however iron deficiency is a common cause.
Avatar n tn If you did not have that measured, then suggest getting that done. Studies show that if the Folate is elevated it may be due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. Suggest repeating the cholesterol and getting it broken down by the different cholesterols to see which ones are low vs. high. If your 'bad' cholesterols are low, that is a very good sign.
Avatar n tn Commonly due to nutrient deficiency but may indicate low or deficient levels of immunglobulins. Deficiency states that list muscle twitches include magnesium deficiency, vitamin D, vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin A is also needed for good eye health. Nutrients needed for a healthy immune system: vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamins C, vitamin D, vitamin E, copper, iron, selenium, and zinc. Magnesium is needed for vitamin D absorption.
Avatar f tn I am 32 years old and I have been diagnosed with B12 deficiency and neuropathy. I have been taking B12 shots for 7 months and my symptons are not getting any better. I am having pain in my legs and I have difficulty walking - my legs feel really heavy and weak. The initial onset was 5 years ago. I have had every test that you can think of and they have all been clear, including MRI and spinal tap. I seem to go into remission and then it comes back, this time even worse.
Avatar f tn After that, the damage is usually permanent. Folate is trapped in an unusable form without enough vitamin B12 so you should see folate levels rise along with your B12 levels. If folate is still low, then supplement along with B12.
Avatar m tn The rest of your blood values for iron were normal. What was your Folate or Vitamin B12 levels? There is a relationship between Iron, Folate, and vitamin B12, and it is important to have all those levels to determine if you have iron deficiency or not.
Avatar n tn An elevated MCV (mean cell volume) would be a likely reason to test for vitamin B12 and/or folate deficiency. An electrolytes imbalance may be a sign of kidney disease/dysfunction. Not sure exactly what labs you have had done but if you want to post them i can comment further.
Avatar f tn Actually patients having Parkinson’s disease being treated by levodopa result in Vit B12 and folate deficiency over a long period. In some it happens earlier and in some late. This could have happened in the case you are discussing. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar m tn s lymphoma, some types of cancer, typhoid, malaria, tuberculosis, dengue, enlarged spleen or hyper-spleenism, and folate deficiency. Since you have muscle and tremors, you need to rule out folate deficiency. Please discuss with his treating doctor to run tests to find the cause. Take care!
Avatar f tn As you are experiencing neurological symptoms with high folate levels, the autoimmune disease pernicious anaemia needs to be ruled out. This may not be the cause but having two antibody tests can show up if you have this condition. Intrinsic factor antibodies and parietal cell antibodies. Causes of high folate levels: Pernicious anaemia Blind loop syndrome Increased folate in the diet Inflammatory bowel disease Optimal B12 is over 800pg/mL or 600pmol/L.
Avatar m tn Reason for such wide range is due to Vitamin B12 is in our tissues plus in the blood so it is difficult to have a true reading. Some people have low vitamin B12 levels due to folate deficiency. You did not mention your folate levels. There are no adverse effects associated with Vitamin B12 intake from food and/ or supplementation. If you are really concerned then Vitamin B12 can be easily consumed from our diet.
Avatar f tn Liver Cancer Cells Coaxed To Commit Suicide By Common Anti-Inflammatory The anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib, known by the brand name Celebrex, triggers liver cancer cell death by reacting with a protein in a way that makes those cells commit suicide, according to a new study. Researchers also found that the combination of celecoxib with each of two chemotherapy drugs killed more liver cancer cells in culture, making those combinations more effective than either drug on its own.
Avatar m tn Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, really nasty eczema on scalp, ectopic heart beats that really make me catch my breath, large red blood cells on retics?? Feel and look awful. Tired, bags under eyes, puffy face, wake up with painful joints in hands but rheumatology screening all fine, heartburn when lying down. Are these all symptoms of Hashimotos/underactive thyroid too? The heart beat thing is really bothering me, as are the pain in small joints.
Avatar f tn Elevated MCV (mean cell volume), which means enlarged blood cells, can be due to various conditions but includes vitamin B12 deficiency and folate deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency traps folate in an unusable form. Low or deficient folate is a common finding with B12 deficiency. Elevated ESR is showing inflammation in the body. An elevated ESR can be due to various conditions but includes thyroid disease and anaemia. Infection is the most common cause of an elevated WBC count.
Avatar f tn High folate levels can mask B-12 deficiency. What autoimmune disorder did they diagnose your son with?
Avatar f tn * Supplementing with folate/high dietary intake of folate * Vitamin B12 deficiency * MTHFR genetic defect * Blind loop syndrome Just to add though, my sister and I have autoimmune pernicious anaemia and we did not have high folate with vitamin B12 deficiency. I had low normal folate and my sister had folate deficiency. I do eat way more vegemite than my sister does though (vegemite is high in folate).
