Avatar m tn I have been on a regime of Synthroid, Cytomel (T3) and Calcitriol for 18 months. Blood assays have been in the correct range for the past 14 months. No recurrence of any tumors During the past six months I have been experiencing high blood pressure and two TIA's (mini strokes). Is it possible that my supplement program could be elevating my blood pressure?
Avatar n tn I recently worked with an epoxy that I had thought was an MSDS Health rating 2, which means: "Intense or continued exposure could cause temporary incapacitation or possible residual injury unless prompt medical attention is given." The warnings on the package suggest to avoid eye/skin contact, avoid breathing vapors and to work in "adequate ventilation" (note that no one ever explains what this means).
1916673 tn?1420233270 I have recently been reading a piece about calcitriol, which is a form of vitamin D that promotes the level of calcium in a canine body. This is not a new initiative in the treatment of kidney failure in dogs - and certainly should not be introduced without precautions - but it does have some promising effects.
4294592 tn?1354141595 My concern is the vitamin d lab she ran. The doctor states my vitamin d is low. How is that possible on calcitriol? Also she wanted me to increase my calcitriol but what does that blood test measure? Active or inactive vitamin d?
393419 tn?1228447393 so. . .after my TT on 8/4/08, I had severe hypocalcemia. . .ended up back in the hospital for a week on iv calcium drip etc. etc. etc. i had an appointment with the endo today (Friday 9/19/08), and my calcium numbers were good: 9.6 totally normal he actually told me to stop taking the calcitriol, but when he tapped my face to do the "Chvostek's Sign", my lips spasmed. . .
455126 tn?1212432198 You may want to ask at your appointment if they ended up removing any of your parathyroids, and how many if they did. I had surgery in January and now only have one parathyroid so am still on calcium 3x's per day and calcitriol, my parathyroid is finaly starting to kick back in but it's still a bit low to be able to take me off all that completely yet. Sometimes if I feel any tingling I will take a tums (that's in addition to what I already take) just as a quick fix.
Avatar n tn 5 glands removed, was in the hospital one night due to having 3.5 glands removed and put on calcitriol twice a day and 8 extra strength tums a day. because my calcium fell to 8 and my pth to 10 post surgery. Two days later my PTH was 6 (range 10-65) and my calcium was 8.5 (range 8.8-10,2). That was last week. This week, the surgeon said to take one calictriol and stay on the 8 tums a day and then said that an endo should now follow me.
Avatar m tn Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition. Collectively, these findings suggest that vitamin-D(3) has an anti-viral activity which is mediated by its active metabolite.

Avatar n tn Today kidney therapy in cats and dogs may include Calcitriol, which is a natural form of vitamin D and is compounded specifically for each pet. Capsules are given by mouth once daily. Calcitriol helps prevent further kidney deterioration, regenerates the kidneys and helps restore normal function. It was given routinely to human dialysis patients. In pets, Calcitriol is only effective when the value of the blood calcium multiplied by the blood phosphorus level is less than 40.
4294592 tn?1354141595 I received a call from my doctor saying my vitamin d levels are low. She did not give me the range. I have hypoparathyroidism due to surgery i take 50mcg's of calcitriol a day to mantain calcium level. She wants me to add another 25mcg's of calcitriol because my vitamin d is low. Does that sound right? Because i would think that the test she did would have to be specific looking at the active and inactive forms of vitamin d. I dont know what to do but i dont think she is right..
Avatar m tn Vitamin D blocks the growth of cancer tumors. The active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, does most of the work. Calcitriol is made in the liver and in various organs affected by cancer. This form of vitamin D offers several benefits: * Activates vitamin D receptors, which turn genes on and off * Prevents cancer from starting (Calcitriol encourages cells to either adapt to their new organ or commit apoptosis [cell suicide].
Avatar n tn parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT? by LLV123, 4 minutes ago Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!!
Avatar m tn Hi I am not a doctor but I would think that there would be an MSDS sheet that would explain the dangers. You already know that everything you we eat breathe and put on the body has to be processed by the liver. I will try to find something. and come back.
Avatar m tn I had a TT on 8/4/08 and my levels just came back around recently. I started out on massive amounts of calcium & calcitriol (cit. d) and am now down to 1500mg of calcium & 1 calcitriol .5 a day. I'm still having weekly blood work to make sure that my levels stay up where they belong, but my endo is pretty sure that my parathyroids have finally kicked back in.
Avatar n tn Once the sum of the blood calcium multiplied by the blood phosphorus levels are less than 40, then that dog (or cat) is a candidate for a natural product called Calcitriol. Calcitriol is a natural form of Vitamin D that was formerly used for human dialysis patients to restore kidney function. Calcitriol is currently available for dogs and cats in kidney failure and veterinarians order it through various compounding pharmacies.
Avatar m tn These cells express CYP27B1, the gene encoding for the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the vitamin-D hormonally active metabolite, calcitriol. Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition.

Avatar n tn I was a physical mental wreck and had sought other opinions. The new endo checked my PTH and said I would have to take Calcitriol for the rest of my life. As the parathyroids would not come back. Calcitriol is a prescription form of Vitamin D. It has helped me tremendously, although it has totally set of changes in my Thyroid meds. I was at a high dosage and still not functioning, I think my body was over compensating in some way.
Avatar f tn I am taking calcium supplements and vitamin d, but just learned that I need to be taking activated vitamin d, (Calcitriol). The problem is that Calcitriol gives me horrible stomach pains. Does anyone know of any other activated vitamin d I could use? More importantly, has anyone out there had their parathyroid function resume/completely recover after months of low parathyroid function? It's been over 5 months since my surgery, and they still haven't kicked in.
