1916673 tn?1420233270 I have recently been reading a piece about calcitriol, which is a form of vitamin D that promotes the level of calcium in a canine body. This is not a new initiative in the treatment of kidney failure in dogs - and certainly should not be introduced without precautions - but it does have some promising effects.
Avatar m tn These cells express CYP27B1, the gene encoding for the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the vitamin D hormonally active metabolite, calcitriol. Treatment with vitamin D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition.
455126 tn?1212432198 25 mcg), although at my Endo appointment 2 weeks ago we agreed that I could just do 1 calcitriol 1x per day but that if I started feeling any tingling or anything to start taking the calcitriol again. My Vit D levels are still a little low but are improving and calcium levels are staying in the normal range, my parathyroid is in the normal range but still low so that's why the Dr. didn't want to reduce any of the other meds yet, just slowly weaning me off. Every Dr.

Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition. Collectively, these findings suggest that vitamin-D(3) has an anti-viral activity which is mediated by its active metabolite.
Avatar m tn Such studies generally find that rates drop rapidly as vitamin D levels rise above 5-10 ng/mL (12-25 nmol/L), then more slowly until levels of 40 ng/mL (100 nmol/L) are reached. How vitamin D works: Vitamin D blocks the growth of cancer tumors. The active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, does most of the work. Calcitriol is made in the liver and in various organs affected by cancer.
Avatar n tn We brought her in for dental work and the blood tests showed high creatinine and urea. Her phosperus levels are normal with elevated calcium. She is showing no signs of sickness. Her appetite is great, lots of energy, etc. 4 years ago another blood test showed the same calcium levels but normal kidney function. My vet(s) are confused by the test results. All her other blood tests are normal (sodium, pot, protein, etc) We are giving her subcutaneous fluids, a kidney diet and some probiotics.
Avatar n tn parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT? by LLV123, 4 minutes ago Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!!
Avatar m tn Ever since she has this terrible feeling of electricity going through her body. She was told it is in connection with calcium intake levels. It is taking what appears to be an inordinate amount of time to balance whatever it is that is creating this presentation. Referrals to specialists to fix it are far off when a person is in such great discomfort. Is there anything that can be done in the meanwhile? Why does this happen? Is it common?
139126 tn?1255036991 Had a TT 5+ weeks ago. Was told my parathyroids were not touched and my calcium levels have been really good. Dr had me take .25 mg of calcitriol daily for 4 weeks; just weaned down to .25mg every other day. Taking 2000 mg of calcium a day plus whatever I get in my diet. My most recent serum calcium test came in at .88 which my Dr says is below normal and he's concerned. Is it usual for your parathyroids to stop working so long after surgery?
4294592 tn?1354141595 I received a call from my doctor saying my vitamin d levels are low. She did not give me the range. I have hypoparathyroidism due to surgery i take 50mcg's of calcitriol a day to mantain calcium level. She wants me to add another 25mcg's of calcitriol because my vitamin d is low. Does that sound right? Because i would think that the test she did would have to be specific looking at the active and inactive forms of vitamin d. I dont know what to do but i dont think she is right..
Avatar n tn Calcitriol is currently available for dogs and cats in kidney failure and veterinarians order it through various compounding pharmacies. Calcitriol is compounded specifically for each pet according to their body weight and BUN-Creatinine levels. It is given to pets as a capsule by mouth once a day.
Avatar n tn The tingling, burning sensation, the muscle spasms and so on. However, my blood test have shown normal calcium levels. I'm currently take my medication as prescribed, but I still have these symptoms. So I'm wondering if long term hypothyroidism can cause hypocalcemia and if a person could have hypocalcemia when calcium levels are within normal range on regular blood test? Or is there a special blood test which test for hypocalcemia?
Avatar f tn drs keep saying magnesium and potassium low had nothing to do with thyroidectomy but how is this possible...niw that I got all three levels are back up but wondering every day if they may go back down is pure torture...ever heard of this???
Avatar m tn I am taking 800-1000mg daily of Citracal, and Calcitriol .25 twice a day. They checked my PTH level and it was undetectable. I also had low phosphorus levels. I am worried about it happening again since I don't know why it happened. The only symptom I really had was menstrual-type cramping.
Avatar f tn t want to do radiation because I have a little one at home. My calcium levels plummeted at the hospital that I needed to stay 4 nights. I was discharged with a level of 7.5. I went back the next day for follow up lab. My levels dropped again. They increased my calcium dosage to 3 pills of cal vit d 4 times a day and citricol 2 times a day. Will I ever be normal or regulated again? I want more children and I just feel with surgery I screwed myself.
Avatar f tn I spent five days in the hospital, thanks to issues with my calcium levels. I could not get above 7.5. I was sent home with instructions to take calcium supplements, but still I have tingling and burning and muscle cramps. It is agony, especially at night. My surgery took three hours, and the only pain I had was the sore throat. Not sure if that was from the anesthesia or the surgery, but it lasted about four days. The incision isn't that painful, and I am still pulling off steri strips.
4294592 tn?1354141595 My concern is the vitamin d lab she ran. The doctor states my vitamin d is low. How is that possible on calcitriol? Also she wanted me to increase my calcitriol but what does that blood test measure? Active or inactive vitamin d?
Avatar f tn It really depends. . .I had my total thyroidectomy on 8/4 and had a calcium crash a few days later. After being in the hospital for a week on an IV calcium drip, I was released on massive amounts of calcitriol (Prescription vit. ) & calcium. I am now down to manageable levels of calcium (3 a day) and my doctor wants me off of the calcitriol. . .
393419 tn?1228447393 so. . .after my TT on 8/4/08, I had severe hypocalcemia. . .ended up back in the hospital for a week on iv calcium drip etc. etc. etc. i had an appointment with the endo today (Friday 9/19/08), and my calcium numbers were good: 9.6 totally normal he actually told me to stop taking the calcitriol, but when he tapped my face to do the "Chvostek's Sign", my lips spasmed. . .
393419 tn?1228447393 So, my calcium levels have been stable for a few weeks now, completely off of the calcitriol and down to normal amounts of calcium supplements (1000--1500mg a day). I was under a lot of emotional stress the past 2 days and last night and this morning, I feel like my tounge, lips/chin are tingling which I know is an early warning sign of low calcium. . .
393419 tn?1228447393 9.6 totally normal he actually told me to stop taking the calcitriol, but when he tapped my face to do the "Chvostek's Sign", my lips spasmed. . .he didn't seem too concerned (and me like an idiot didn't ask any questions about it), but my feet have been falling asleep easily lately and my hands have been a bit tingly what's up? what could couse that if my calcium is supposedly fine? . . .could it be magnesium?
536009 tn?1293190781 D because I was on large doses of calcitriol as well. Now that my levels are stabilizing, I am taking calcium w/ magnesium (from whole foods) and a multi-vitamin that has vit. D as well as the plain calcium. I also have viactiv chews w/ D & K if I feel like my levels are a little low. I went from 8 calcitriol & 16 calcium pills a day to only 2 to 3 calcium pills a day plus the multi-vitamin. so now I'm at 1000-1500mg of calcium a day instead of those mega-doses.

Took Calcitriol for 3 days, asked endo if I could try OTC to raise it, didn't like the Calciriol...
