Common Questions and Answers about Break up kidney stones

break-up

Avatar m tn Are shock waves used to break up kidney stones that are already in the bladder? I am confused by what the doctor is saying. She showed me the two stones in the bladder on the x-ray, but she has scheduled me for shock wave surgery to break the stones up, but all of the info I am reading is that the stones are broken up in the kidney. They are going to place a stent in me, but what for if the stones are already in the bladder?
Avatar n tn There is a procedure a Dr can do to break up the stones. I'm almost certain it has to be done in the hospital and I think you can go home after it's finished.
Avatar m tn I do know that I had a procedure to break up a large stone that I had and my urologist instructed me to drink lemonade. He told me that it would keep the stone fragments from bonding to each other and forming into another stone or reattaching to anything left of the original stone. I would guess that it would have some effect and certainly couldn't hurt. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn I ended up having kidney surgery at 25weeks with my first because the stones were too large to pass. Now Im 32weeks with my second and i have passed 12 stones since 9weeks pregnant. Its miserable. I had to stop taking my prenatal vitamins because the calcium blocks my kidneys so they switched me to folic acid instead. I decreased my calcium intake. And don't eat alot of green vegetables since those have a tendency to cause stones. You just gotta let the stones pass on there own.
Avatar f tn I am having a lithroscopy to break up kidney stones a stent may have to be put in place in order that the stones can pass. I have read and heard how uncomfortable this can be and are there other options to having a stent put in place.
Avatar m tn Urologic surgeons perform PNL through a small incision in the back and into the kidney, using an instrument called a nephroscope to break up and extract the stones. Urologists attempt to remove all the stone fragments through the nephroscope during the procedure, leaving none to pass through the urinary tract. Patients usually stay in the hospital for one to two days following PNL, with additional recovery time lasting one to two weeks.
Avatar f tn I feel for you dear! I before pregnancy is prone to kidney stones...which puts me s high risk! I know kidney stones are painful enough but to add pregnancy on top of it...its so much worse! I do hope the best for you and a fast recovery!
5900973 tn?1396064391 I found out monday I have kidney stones for the 2nd time this pregnancy... :( I am going in friday for my csection and just hoping the pain eases up for me or that I just pass the dang stone... I dont want to be dealing with that after the birth. It just seems like bad timing, not that there is a good time for these things... Tmi but my urine looks like cranberry juice, kinda scary but I know its from the stone. I have been drinking tons of water.
Avatar f tn It depends on what type of kidney stones you have... if you have stones that are a calcium based mixture (calcuim-oxalate for instance) then you should never take a calcium supplement. You would want to increase calcium in your diet through dairy products, etc. but calcium supplements are a definite no-no as they don't break down in your system the way the calcium in food does. If you have any other type of stone such as uric or struvite, etc.
5650943 tn?1374112808 I had kidney stones with my first, I was literally peeing blood. It was extremely painful and took forever to break apart cause I couldn't take any meds being allergic to most.
Avatar n tn And if there not removed can cause severe back ache and blood in urine and damage to kidneys. i have the lithotripsy done to break up the stones and they put you to sleep and they blast the stones. For some people passing the stone can be painful but i never had any problems with it.
472139 tn?1211332563 hi everyone i was in the ER last night all day because of kidney stones, ive never felt so ill in my life thankgod i didnt taper down on methadone, they gave me like 5 shots of fentyle or something lasts 1/2hr each time..... methadone doesnt play a roll in them does it?
Avatar n tn This was also accompanied by tingle sensations all over my body. At the 3rd week I had a terrible bout kidney stones. I wonder if ARS had something to due with this. 4 weeks after exposure I went to get tested and everything came back negative. I haven't got tested since then due to the tremendous amount of fear of a positive result. Some symtoms I experience at the moment are nasuea, diarrhea, muscle & joint pain, and a macupapular rash on my face and trunk of my body.
Avatar n tn It uses shock waves that pass easily through the body but are strong enough to break up a kidney stone. If ESWL does not work or if you have a very large stone, Percutaneous nephrolithotomy or nephrolithotripsy is done. The surgeon puts a narrow telescope into the kidney through a cut in your back. He or she then removes the stone or breaks it up and removes it. After you have had kidney stones, you are more likely to have them again.
Avatar f tn That's too bad. Can you be more specific for what you have tried so far? Are you working with a doctor? This article has ways to combat kidney stones. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-stones/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20355759 A 9mm kidney stone is big and those often don't pass on their own. This article gives some ways to remove it from having it surgically removed to using sound waves to break it up to using a scope to remove it, etc.
Avatar m tn Since 1994 I have had over 250 kidney stones. I drink at least a gallon of water each day, am on meds to break up stones, which dont work, on meds for bp which also cuts calcium down in the body, on a low-oxalate diet, low calcium diet, and just found out i have 6 more stones. 1-6mm on left and a 3 mm on left side, and 4 stones with the range of 1-3 mm on the right side. I hurt all the time, urologists thinks im in there for the narcotics, what is someone supposed to do? Hurt?
Avatar f tn The key is to drink LOTS of water and cranberry juice(no cocktail, no sugar added). Add lemon to ur water, it helps break up the stones. Drinking more fluids will help aid on keeping ur ureter open, making the pathway for the stones smooth and easier(less pain for you while they pass). Hope that helps, take care.
Avatar m tn Is drinking Crystal Light lemonade, rather than just plain water, an effect preventive measure against kidney stones? I had a kidney stone about 9 years ago and a friend recently told me that her son's urologist said to drink Crystal Light lemonade due to some ingredient that helped break up kidney stones. This seems too good to be true...
Avatar m tn Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy is used to remove stones slightly smaller than a half an inch that are located near the kidney. This method uses ultrasonic waves or shock waves to break up stones. Then, the stones leave the body in the urine. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is used for large stones in or near the kidney, or when the kidneys or surrounding areas are incorrectly formed. The stone is removed with an endoscope that is inserted into the kidney through a small opening.
Avatar m tn The urologist said the instacare was exaggerating. I do have calcium build up in both kidneys and a 3mm stone on my right side that doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. He offered an X-ray with contrast but didn't think this was the cause of my pain. So I declined that test. He did put me on antibiotics in case a kidney infection was missed since I still feel so sick. They will wait and check my small stone in one year.
Avatar n tn ll be able to pass it on our own. Talk to your Doctor about lithotrypsy (shocking your kidney to break up the stone), or having a ureterscope done (where they go up there with a scope and break it up with a laser). Don't worry, they sedate you! I've had both and they still weren't much fun but neither is trying to pass a huge stone thats stuck in your ureter. Unfortuneately I'm an expert now on how they get rid of stones so let me know if I can help you further.
Avatar f tn Can anyone tell me how to prevent them!! They say kidney stones are calcium build up am I drinking to much milk? I've never had kidney stones till I got pregnant.
Avatar m tn It has helped me. so far as I know it has broken up two 7mm stones that I had. One in each kidney. Since being dignoised with MSK I am taking it daily.
Avatar f tn I am new to kidney stones. I passed my first kidney stone about 2 months ago and I know I have two more. A 2mm on one side and a 4 on the other side. The first one I had happened at night, so I woke up in pain. I am just wondering is there symptoms you can feel when you are awake. Just 4 days ago, I had 4 very sharp pains in the right side my back over a 2 hour period. Today I am hit with a wave of nausea.
Avatar n tn Also, specifically, lemon juice appears to break down CaOx stones. I pass a kidney stone at least once a month, so I completely understand what you are going through. No doctor would expect a 9mm stone to pass on its own, its just too big. I personalyl wouldn't be that anxious to break it up though, because a 9mm stone can make quite a few smaller ones. Luckily, in some blessed individuals, stones can stay in the kidney painlessly for many years without causing any trouble at all.
Avatar f tn I can relate. I had a 1, 3 and 6 mm stones (lower and mid pole) prior to a lithotripsy in July 2022. In November, kidney pain returned. A CT scan revealed 3 and 4 mm stones in lower pole, and 2 1 mm stones in renal collecting system (no idea what that is). I would consider this a failed lithotripsy -- now more stones that will likely grow and not passing. My doctor appointment is in 2 weeks. Not sure what to expect. I've had 3 lithotripsies -- may not be as effective as expected.
Avatar f tn In June, I had an abdominal CT which turned up a 5 mm kidney stone. No one told me to do anything about it. An ultrasound in October (to try and figure out some ongoing pain issues) turned up a 1.3 cm stone in the same kidney. So my question is whether or not a stone can grow that fast in four months or is it possible that one of the imaging studies was/is wrong? Also, if this stone is 1.3 cm, can this be left alone or should it be removed?
Avatar f tn In July I had surgery to remove and break up two stones, one 1 cm and the other 6 cm, and I thought that the 2mm stone I had also came out. I just had an ultrasound this morning and the tech said there's still a 2mm stone in my kidney. Is it normal that the doctor would leave a stone in the kidney like that? I truly thought I was done with this...
