Common Questions and Answers about Avonex reactions

avonex

2015036 tn?1332997788 Hi everyone! I have a question about controlling allergic reactions. I won't see my neuro until next month, and I have had more difficulty with allergic reaction to Avonex. For the last couple of months, I've been able to control it with 10mg of oral prednisone, and two benadryl tablets- along with the usual pre medication for interferon. Last week, the rash persisted for an additional day. This week, the rash/itchiness is still present, three days later.
Avatar f tn I am having site reactions from the Beta also but I feel much better than I did on Avonex. Very mild flu like symptoms compared to Avonex. Knowing what to do it very difficult.
1168718 tn?1464983535 Hi Candy, I was on Copaxone for several months, but I had to come off it because of adverser reactions. I didn't have any reactions to coming off it though. I didn't have a dmd for about six weeks afterward, then I went on Avonex. I don't have any personal experience with the newer drugs.
Avatar f tn Alot of people react to Interferons, just as you describe. I took Avonex for three years and unfortunately I was one of those that always had side effects, so I gave up. With Rebif you are taking an even higher dose of Interferon Beta 1-A than Avonex users. I have heard that Rebif users start to notice a reduction in side effects after more time on the drug. There is that chance that could happen for you. I would talk things over with your doctor.
1125401 tn?1262898927 I have been on copaxone for little over a year its not working for me so my neuro has asked me to try avonex. My avonex nurse is coming this evening but I am wondering how long you actually gave it to get the symptoms of the shot to calm down. I am crossing everything to hope I dont get the flu symptoms so bad but we will see. I have a husband that works away and 3 small kids to care for, I dont want to be in bed all weekend when its the only time we get to spend as a family.
921525 tn?1248122687 Hi, I was wondering if anyone who has taken both Avonex and Rebif could give some input here. I have been taking Rebif since this past June, but have started to wonder about how Avonex would compare side-effect-wise. As they are both interferons, I would think they would be similar, but I'm not certain. The idea of once a week sounds nice in comparion though, so I would like some actual first-hand knowledge. Thanks!
Avatar n tn Hi I have a question- I have been on Copaxone for over 10 years and I am suffering with indented sites which can no longer let my shots be injected. My question is which of the ms treatments should I go to next? My MS dr. gave me papers on Avonex but the side effects is what I'm worried about. My Copazone has worked so well I'm afraid to change but just running out of places to give the shot. Thanks for any reply's..
Avatar f tn t inject daily so Copaxone was out. Then the needle with Avonex was too big, nor was there an auto inject so Avonex was out. Rebif has an auto injector & it is only 3x's a week, which is the medium of the other two. So far no major side affects. Two weeks ago I thought I was having a reaction to the meds so I skipped two injection days. I resumed the injections on Wednesday & so far no reaction. I've been on Rebif since April and am still getting use to sticking myself.....
Avatar n tn Wondering if Avonex can cause itchiness & rashes throughout body after a few mos. of using. Was on it for 1 1/2 yrs., stopped for 8 mos. & resumed. Started getting some rashes & itchiness throughout body. Thank you !
Avatar f tn At least with the Interferons, they are a once a week injection (I think Rebif is like Avonex, once a week) You may have some slight injection site reactions, in that you will get a slight raised area (maybe) and some feverish feeling at the the injection site, but I found when I was on Avonex, that it was a very short-lived reaction. Don't wait too long before you start back on some type of DMD. With the Interferons, they must be kept refrigerated until you are ready to use them.
Avatar m tn Copax didn't work, Betaserone made me sick all the time, and Avonex worked but I got tired of being sick every weekend. Been off of everything for over a year and now my MS is getting worse. I was excited about Tecfidera until I researched it and read post on a Tecfidera facebook page. Are the side effects that bad? I know everyone is different I just don't want to be sick all the time again. My nero mentioned the Avonex every three week shot. Has anyone tried that one yet?
439601 tn?1357860886 with either Tysbara or the oral meds because the sick feeling reactions on avonex (at lower strength)-have had serious reactions. It makes since to me-but who knows...feel like a guinny (sp?) pig and not sure of anything at this point. When I was dx, it was incredible to me....in brain lesions, o bands high and also in spinal cord. I didnt have an opportunity to get used to any of this-its been replapse and relapse and episode after...well u get it.
198419 tn?1360242356 I have been on Avonex and am now on Copaxone. With the Avonex, it is exactly how Quix describes. The needle really does go in, like going through butter. I too have hit some small blood vessels while injecting during those years and had a spurt of blood shooting into the air. Scared the dickens out of me. I applied pressure to the site and only had slight bruising for a couple days after injection.
Avatar n tn I have been on Gilenya since it came out, 4 or 5 year ago. It is much better than the other drugs I'd been on, Rebif and Avonex. Those made me feel terrible and had horrible injection site reactions. Gilenya has not caused me any digestive problems. I did loose some hair for the first year or so, but not too bad. Also, though it is not listed as a side effect, I have had joint problems that came on just since starting gilenya.
Avatar f tn Last night I had my first Avonex injection. I had a lot of hesitation about going on any drug, but figured I need to fight MS. The injection did not hurt at all. After the medicine was in it stung just a little bit. I woke up at 2:30 in the morning with the chills and by 5 I had the full flu like symptoms. By 3 in the afternoon, I felt pretty good except for a headach, but I've been having frequent headaches lately anyway.
Avatar f tn m unable to do the arms or legs anymore due to bad reactions. Avonex is taken in the muscle, right? Is it mainly the thigh? Do you have problems with the pitting skin? My neuro told me I shouldn't inject into damaged skin. I am having a hard time finding a place to inject. I know the medicine spreads thru the fat and basically kills it straight across. I stress because even tho I have a few side effects, I am glad its not flu symptoms. Any ideas is greatly appreciated!
1168718 tn?1464983535 I couldn't really see anything, so I just tried seeing it on my full screen but all i couldn't make out was that your cheeks, nose and upper brow seemed to be flushed with more redness. I can't see if it's raised like a welt, or dry etc all i can make out is the red but it reminds me of the 'Butterfly rash' seen in Lupus. I'm not 100% sure but i do recall reading something about allergic reactions causing a similar rash, though not enough to pass on.
Avatar n tn Hi anuj, I read ur question. I also diagnosed ms just few days ago, nd I also prescribed injection avonex. But I wish I could give u exact answer but I don't have any personally experience about avonex coz I don't start avonex yet but I know I will.Just m saying that i found on google that when ever u inject just relax, don't take any stress, u may get flu like symptom so take ibruphen, take rest how much u can, then of course, u can manage it.
Avatar f tn These replies are all helpful. And no, I don't usually feel like I have the flu, from Avonex or anything else. It's strange, but I hardly ever get viruses, or "things going around." I once went 9 years without getting a cold, but usually I get one every year or two. As a kid I had many years of perfect attendance at school. I don't mean to imply that as an adult I don't get sick, but I tend to get my own weird stuff, that's emphatically NOT going around.
