Common Questions and Answers about Avandia versus metformin

avandia

Avatar m tn I guess that I need to give a metformin testimonial too. After achieving SVR I've been on 2000 mg of metformin per day. I am still SVR. Therefore, metformin also provides a protective shield (almost like a vaccine) against further infection. The stuff is great, the stuff is cheap - if only they could miniaturize those horse pills somewhat.
2053416 tn?1330411192 There are new drugs out on the market that may help you. Some of them even help you lose weight. They are GLP-1 drugs. There is a new one called Bydureon that is a once a week shot. I am going to ask my doctor about it on my next visit.
Avatar n tn I am experiencing some weight loss and I am not sure if it due to my sugar, the fact I was taken off Avandia and put on Junovia because I know Avandia increases weight or if something else is happening to me. Also would high blood sugar like mine lead to sweating, tingling in legs and hands and I almost feel like my body is hot...
Avatar f tn I have PCOS also, and I am currently 20 weeks pregnant. I was put on avandia (similar to metformin), femara (similar to clomid), and a trigger shot to help me ovulate. I also did IUI. But I got pregnant on my second cycle of this combination. This was after trying for 6 years, but only 9 months with a reproductive endocrinologist. So I would suggest that if you do have PCOS, and you aren't currently seeing an RE, to go see one.
Avatar m tn [copy/paste] "For reasons still not identified, the long-term use of Actos weakens the respiratory tract’s immunity. This results to throat and respiratory infections like sore throat, sinusitis, coughs, and colds." Use with caution if you have heart issues. Also, Avandia is the other drug that falls into this classification. The FDA warns not to use Avandia for first time users, in fact, the FDA severely restricts its use.
Avatar m tn Your husband seems to be experiencing hypoglycemia and his doctor should be notified immediately.
Avatar m tn I posted about this a few weeks back about Metformin and here is the whole article about it. It is very interesting that a diabetes drug has been found to combat cancer and HCV. There are probably many other drugs already approved that could also help different diseases if used "off label". Usually these things are found out by accident. http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2010/nov2010_The-Drug-Virtually-Everyone-Should-Ask-their-Doctor-About_01.
506810 tn?1210691647 t mature? So now she took me off of metformin and I just started avandia. And wheneveer I start my next period she's gonna put me on Femara and an hcg shot. Avatar m tn org/wiki/Thiazolidinedione this drug is same family as Rosiglitazone (Avandia) which has been foud active on hbsag and hbvdna, question is does TZD lower hbsag since decrease of hbsag inibits cancer growth too and if lowered to und eradicate hbv?
Avatar n tn She is gaining weight, has trouble breathing, and has been experiencing some chest pains lately (Dr. gave nitro). She is on avandia and I would like to know if this could be the cause of her recent decline in health?
4067667 tn?1349533022 yes clomid 100 mg plus metformin 1500mg per day may work with success rate 20% per cycle . i hope you to be pregnant soon . PCOS is a simple disorder but need close monitore to check dose versus response .
Avatar n tn Correction to my comment; "For the long-acting form, metformin ER, the starting dose is metformin ER 500 mg once daily, and the maximum dosing is metformin ER 2000 mg once daily (or metformin ER 1000 mg twice daily).
586512 tn?1218512079 I'm also taking metformin, though I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS. Doc said it would help with the lining of my uterus. We tried 3 cycles of clomid and IUIs. No success. Clomid gave me hot flashes and may have made my cervical mucus hostile. This cycle, I took femara and had IUIs (in 2ww). I didn't have hot flashes, but my progesterone level went down slightly when tested on CD 19, compared to when I was on clomid.
Avatar f tn There are drugs which will improve fatty liver infiltration - I believe Avandia is one - but I understand they come with their own set of side effects.
434242 tn?1204173382 I took metformin and it made me tired. It kept my sugar readings at this freaky weird level of 150 - constantly! I had to go off of it and on to something else - and eventually - I ended up on insulin shots cause I just didn't respond to oral meds that well. The regular Metformin gave me gastro problems and I didn't have any appetite and freaky blood sugar readings. and the Metformin ER made me so tired and no appetite and freaky blood sugar readings - Everyone is different!
Avatar n tn Also go on the websites of the manufactures, sometimes they have coupons for a % off your bill. When I joint the avandia program I got a couple months free avandia, plus they send coupons at times. Also ask your md for samples. I use to work at a doctors office and we got enough samples to open a pharmacy. Another thing, if your job offers a flexible spending account, I find that is nice as well. it reduces your taxes and you can contribute up to 3000 a year to them. good luck.
Avatar f tn Yes, i was put on Avandia for Type 2 abt 5 years ago. Since then my #'s have improved with diet and exercise to the point that a new Dr. said she saw no reason for me to be on Avandia and i have since stopped useing it. It was never vy high, around 159 or so when it was diagnosed. If i am not careful of my diet it can jump up to the 130's to 140's. Am also on diovan for HBP which is usually under good control with the 1 med.
Avatar f tn Can I take Evening Primrose and Femara together? I'm also taking Avandia. Any thoughts would be great!
Avatar f tn On Dec 5 my doctor prescribed Metformin 1500 mg at night, but I have been taking in the morning. I was extremely nauseated and had diarrhea the first two weeks, but now I'm only have nausea very occasionally and getting better. The most amazing thing (I thought) was that the weight started peeling off me 2 weeks ago. I now weigh 238 lbs. That's 16 lbs since Dec 5.
568322 tn?1370165440 Pre-treating with Metformin or Avandia for 3 months before tx lowered IR and viral load and resulted in an EVR of 71%....and the patients were co-infected (more difficult to clear) and some non-responders. (from AASLD meeting Nov 2008)..... "In Chronic Hepatitis C (HCV), Pretreatment with Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) or Metformin Decreases Insulin Resistance (IR) and HCV Viral Load and Increases Early Virologic Response (EVR)." M. Adler, J.L. Matloff, A.S. Boxer, H. Han, M.
Avatar n tn Prior to that I took oral medications only(all sorts, metformin, avandia, etc..) In October of last year my A1C was at 6.3. Adjusting my insulin levels seemed to have no effect on my fasting blood gloucose level (typically in 130 range). August of last year I was put on Tricor and added Diovan 160 in Novemeber, and have always been taking 1000mg of metformin twice a day. Since November my blood sugar has become unmanagable (fasting in 150+ range).
Avatar f tn Studies have shown that up to 80% will benefit from such treatment. Many who failed to ovulate with letrozole or metformin therapy will respond when rechallenged with these medications after ovarian drilling. Interestingly, women in these studies who are smokers, rarely responded to the drilling procedure. Side effects are rare, but may result in adhesion formation or ovarian failure if the procedure is performed by an inexperienced surgeon.
427265 tn?1444076436 plus a patient of theirs WITHOUT cirrhosis had started tx and also on Avandia for IR, and ended up at the Mayo for an emergency TP. Not to say that comparing Metformin and Avandia are apples to apples, but, it did change my mind about it being a Stage 4. And I did have some second thoughts about it last night thinking I may have short changed myself, but I really don't think I went into this blindly...just made the best decisions I could based on the info at hand.
Avatar m tn Metformin has been around for a long time, and is pretty effective at decreasing insulin resistance. It might increase liver enzymes a touch, but it’s usually a pretty good trade off. If you initiate metformin, you might get some mild to moderate GI issues; but these generally resolve after several weeks. Keep up with diet and exercise though; it really is an important component of DM II management, like it or not. What sort of A1c numbers are you getting? Are you considering HCV therapy?
