Common Questions and Answers about Appendicitis and the elderly

appendicitis

Avatar m tn t necessarily rule out appendix issues either - The symptoms of appendicitis can vary. It can be hard to diagnose appendicitis in young children, the elderly, and women of childbearing age. The first symptom is often pain around your belly button. (See: Abdominal pain) The pain may be minor at first, but it becomes more sharp and severe. Your appetite will be reduced and you may have nausea, vomiting, and a low fever.
Avatar n tn I suggest that you go quickly to your Emergency/accident department and ask them either to rule out appendicitis - or else confirm it and carry out the necessary operation.
Avatar n tn sounds exactly like appendicitis, you should take him into the ER
Avatar f tn Exactly 4 weeks later I developed appendicitis and had it removed via laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon said it was "messy in there". I have had no other symptoms suggestive of HIV. My concern is the appendicitis was due to lymphoid hyperplasia (swollen lymph tissue) caused from a viral infection (HIV) given it occurred so soon after exposure. It seems a bit out there to consider them related however I do see it as a possibility, but was unable to find any studies to confirm.
Avatar m tn It seems to move around, from the appendix area to the groin, and wraps around to the back and kidney area. As well, a mix of constipation and then diahrrea. I'm really quite terrified of it being appendicitis or worse yet, peritonitis. I have seen two health professionals, one at a clinic and the other in the emergency room, both of them saying its nothing, perhaps just a pulled or strained muscle. Like said, I'm scared, and I would like some sort of reassurance or advice.
Avatar m tn This is incredible pain, ussually minutes before I will go to the bathroom, and have diarreah. After going to the bathroom, I feel relief and everything calms down, I even feel my colon calmer. As of late though, I have been experiencing abdomen discomfort even if I don´t drink for a month or so, and I am getting a little bit worried. What type of exams or routines would you recommend? Is this serious? Thank you in advance for your response.
Avatar f tn Hi, About a month or two ago, I believe I had strained some muscles while working out. The pain didn't happen right away maybe one or two weeks afterwards. At first it stemmed from my neck, shoulders, and upper back. Soon after I started to feel pain in my chest, both sides right by my armpits, lower back, and abdomen area especially on my right side. The pain is usually sharp. When I do sit for a long period of time, both my right and left sides hurt but more on my right.
Avatar n tn I went to the doctor and he said it is probably related to the PCOS. He has me on Metformin along with my Victoza. I hope it goes away soon. However, just today I realized I have my second kidney stone.
Avatar m tn I know you will say I need checked out and I agree in my brain, but the other part of my brain wants to know if these long pain free periods over the course of 3 or so months without a perforation are typical of appendicitis issues? So, in summary, I am curious about the long course of this and the pain free periods. Thank you.
Avatar n tn Then the pain gets very sharp and spreads to the left side and lower left of the back, i get hit by a sudden feeling of weakness and have to lie down. What are the possible causes of this pain, and could it be linked to my other symptoms? p.s. i am fully aware that this is not a diagnosis, it is just to know wether or not i should get this checked by my GP. p.p.s i am male, 20, 5ft 10", and weigh 10 1/2 stone and otherwise healthy.
Avatar m tn I took plan B on the last day of my period which was december 25th and starting on the 29th i had soreness in what seems like right above the ovaries, a pain on each side of my abdomen. I also have this pulsating around my belly button and it will shoot down to the right side then give me back pain. I also have headaches and have gotten easily hot and overheated during the night. I know im not pregnant because ive testes and JUST came off my period and it was normal. Could this be my apendix?
Avatar f tn Well, they transferred her to another hospital, praise the Lord, and they took her to the surgery right away, it turns out her appendix had ruptured and caused poison to circulate all over her body, she was blessed that it did not kill her, but she sure was sick and the surgeons had to do a lot of "repair" work on her which caused her stay in the hospital to be longer than most appendectomies.
Avatar n tn As far as I know, the most apparent symptom of appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix) is a dull pain in the stomach on the right side, that moves to severe lower right abdominal pain. http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/digestive-diseases-appendicitis The above website explains different symptoms that could accompany appendicitis.
Avatar f tn Im 10 weeks pregnant and got my appendix removed yesterday (saturday) they told me about the risks with the anastesia and baby, but they also told me that if i left it in and it ruptured id lose baby for sure. Anyone else have their appendix removed and had a perfectly healthy baby?
Avatar f tn 30 am with bad stomach pain (top middle), bloating, and gas. I went the the ER about 6 hours later and received indigestion meds. I felt much better outside of mild abdominal discomfort from gas still. Now the next day my lower right stomach is pretty tender, nowhere else, just lower right side. Should I be worried about appendicitis? Could it be tender from extreme gas and bloating? Thoughts?
Avatar f tn I'm not really sure if I'm in the right place her but I'm becoming concerned. Last night I started having a dull pain on the right side of my abdomen, across from my belly button, it went away today but came back around lunch time. It went away again and now at 2am it has come back. I pressed on my stomach a bit and it send a shooting pain through my belly button area. Its not SUPER painful, just more of a discomfort.
Avatar n tn d been suffering from a fever, lower/midline abdominal pain on my right side, and severe diarrhea for several days, and was told by my doctor to go to the ER to rule out appendicitis. Besides my signs/symptoms, the only abnormal finding was a slightly enlarged appendix in the ultrasound and CT. I was told to keep an eye out for things, and to go back asap if things got worse- which they likely would within a reasonably short amount of time.
Avatar f tn As soon as she left the bedside, I told my ex I still thought it was appendicitis. The surgeon got there and heard the story, saw the white count, and examined him. He said it was gangrenous appendicitis and started an IV. Then after 6 hours or something he took out his appendix. So yeah, it can be confusing sometimes. The thing they most often confuse it with is diverticulitis. That can be even worse than appendicitis though.
Avatar f tn Before i went to bed last night i had a real bad pain in the centre of my stomach i didn't think much of it but when i woke up this morning the pain had moved lower and to the right of my stomach, i haven't been able to (or even wanted to) eat and the pain is making me be sick. one of my flat mate took my temperature and said it was 38.0°C (100.4°F), which she said was a little high. any clues whats wrong and what i should do about it?
Avatar m tn I never took the antibiotics. The next day the local GP said no appendicitis. After 15 days still the symptoms continued occasionally and a went to a Gastroenterologist who advised to take Taxim-O an antibiotic. I took it for 5 days. I took an ultrasound of the abdomen and the doctor said no appendicitis. But I pestered him with questions about my symptoms. He then took a screening CT in the lab and gave the report as Chronic appendicitis with 7mm thickness.
Avatar f tn Hi. 5'10" Gent, and brand spankin newbie to this site. i just turned 56 in April. In my journal August. 12, 2013, I recorded wgt. 247.5 lb, BP 157/101, severe depression & anxiety with heaart palpitations and mid-nightime panic attacks. Also using CPAP setting of 14cm for severe sleep apnea, and suffered almost daily migraines. Plus my triglicerides were, as my dr put it, "through the roof!
Avatar m tn The answer, is yes. The elderly can be very sensitive to psychotropic medications, causing all kinds of side effects and adverse reactions. If the "screaming" you are observing is new since the med(s) were started, then a call to the prescribing doc is in order ASAP.
Avatar m tn A home health nurse visited for 2 weeks and stopped. She was given the Diltiazem, Lasix and Seroquel while in the hospital and has been on them about 2 months. Her doctor wants her to stay on the Seroquel indefinitely and hasn't really been concerned about monitoring her. I plan to take her to another doctor soon.
Avatar f tn I had summer school of course and I walk to and from there and when I got home inplayed the computer for an 1hr or 2 then once I got off my side started to hurt out of the blue and It felt like im on my period andnim not because I just had it and gone with it two weeks ago and right now immlaying down and when I type my symptoms in google still says early signs of pregnancy, endometriosis, cervical cancer, lastly ovulating so I dont whats wrong and my mom dont know what wrong so have any of
Avatar n tn There are two cases I know of in which the individuals have sporadic issues with their appendix and have had the issue for, in one case one year and in the other case about 2 years. The problem never escalates to a full-stage appendicitis 'attack' stage. Both individuals and their doctors have chosen to treat with antibiotics which seems to bring things back into line - at least for the time being.
Avatar f tn If a person is young (ish) and otherwise healthy and gets a UTI, that person will feel the normal symptoms of it, but someone who is elderly (although someone does not necessarily have to be 'elderly' to have Alzheimers), and suffers from dementia or Alzheimers, will have a much different experience. I went through this with my mother and currently, my MIL, and it is absolutely true. Below is a short excerpt taken from the link I will share below...
