Common Questions and Answers about Angiogram vs echocardiogram

angiogram

Avatar f tn What are the informed, educated questions to ask and make the right decision on continuing meds vs stents vs redo bypass. My mother is a doctor and needs to ask the right questions to the surgeon and make informed, educated decision for my father.
Avatar m tn Recently I had an echocardiogram that showed no abnormality. At the same time I took a chemical stress test that I failed with a 13% difference between resting and stressed measurements. I had an angiogram several years ago that showed mild amount of plaque. The cardiologist is indicating that based upon the stress test I may want to have another CT angiogram .
Avatar n tn Doctor said that there could be a problem with heart walves so, he suggested to do Angiogram. Are there alternatives to do Angiogram? Is it really required to do Angiogram? Please advise. Thanks, Padma.
Avatar f tn Recently I had a echocardiogram that said the following: Mitral Valve: The fvlve structure is normal with thin mobile leaflets. doppler study shows evidence of mild regurgitation. Summary: Mild MR, EF 62%. This was followed up by an Angiogram and the report said: Left ventricular angiography reveals normal regional wall motion. The ejection fraction was 70%. the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure was mildly elevated at 17mmhg.
Avatar m tn My mother is suggested to undergo angiogram test since her test reports showed that she has "a small calcified nodule attached to PML tip prolapsing into LV". How complex is this issue? do i need to go through this angiogram test. what could be the results of this test and whats the next procedue for this?
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, I made an error in first post...I do know the difference between angioplasty and an angiogram. I tried to make a corrrection in my second post and inartfully referred specifically to just an angiogram (cath vs. CT scan). Prit's father had had a CT angiogram and now the doctor wanted to do a cath angiogram.

Avatar m tn He wanted me to have an EKG since I had just turned 51. It showed that I had a previous heart attack. I was shocked since I have never had any chest or arm pain and no shortness of breath or tiredness. He wants me to have a nuclear stress test which I am balking at since I'm having trouble believing the EKG. Any advice?
Avatar n tn You would need a stress test or a CT scan of your heart ( 64/128 Slice Coronary CT angiogram ). Make an appointment with a cardiologist. Why do you think you have a clogged artery?
Avatar f tn Hypokinesis indicates heart wall movement impairment. The condition can be due to ischemia (lack of blood flow) of heart cells in the position given. A better test would be an echocardiogram to view the heart wall movement in realtime, and if there is an impairment that is significant the test will calculate an EF below normal. EF (ejection fraction) is the percent of blood pumped into circulation with each heartbeat.
Avatar n tn The results will usually be backed up with an angiogram. If the angiogram shows restricted vessels in that area, then the nuclear scan is confirmed and your heart muscle really needs intervention to be done. Was your ischemia present with your heart at rest during the scan or under stress? or both? If at stress only, then medication will usually be the first intervention, but if the ischemia is at rest, then probably a stent or bypass will be suggested.
19887518 tn?1486048647 They all start with basic heart rate and blood pressure, then EKG, then halter monitor, then Echocardiogram, then Nuc stress test, then angiogram, with each being more costly and more invasive, and also more accurate. I understand your frustration, been through it too, but this is how they do it. DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a doctor. You should only accept medical advise from a licensed professional.
Avatar n tn Not to be critical as I beleive Lutheran meant to say cath angiogram. Both cath or CT angiogram use contract dye to view perfusion, and that procedure is the definition of angiogram. A CT scan 64/128 views the anatomy of the 4 main heart vessels and will show any soft plaque between the linings of the vessel as well as any plaque buildup in the lumen. The cath angiogram views the lumen for the plaque that narrows and obstructs blood flow causing angina (chest pain).
Avatar n tn I have to have a valve replaced and am having an angiogram to see if there is blockage to be treated at the same time. The physician doing the angiogram has indicated he will put in a stent if he finds blockage. My feeling is that this is unnecessary as the major advantage of angioplasty (less invasive than bypass) is totally irrelevant since I'm having a valve replaced anyway. Thoughts?
Avatar f tn A CT scan 64-slice angiogram would be an alternative but for someone your young age doctors may be against the procedure due radiation exposure. The procedure includes assessment of the AV, aortic root, ascending, arch and decreasing aorta. Sensitivity is good with MRI and MRA if the software package is designed to image structures. MRI generally has the highest sensitivity of the imaging modalities, with similar specificity to CT and TEE. .
Avatar n tn Hi, I had a ct angiogram Dec 21 and my calcium score is 694. My cholesterol is 242. My doctor put me on crestor 10 mg per day. I just got the hard copy report today and my dr. is away for the holidays.... what does that score mean? I have chest pain frequently but they thought it was all in my head....
Avatar f tn Hello, I was told by the NP that my echocardiogram came back not normal. I asked why and she said it showed slow blood flow back to the heart. She didn't say anything about injection factor. My question is, "is slow blood flow to the heart mean the EF?" I was at the Dr. because of more scary Angina symptoms. Two days later I had a 2 day nuclear stress test and am waiting for the results.
Avatar f tn I'm NOT a health professional, so keep that in mind. However, I've a lot of heart blockages and have A-Fib and some opinions. If you want to determine if you have A-Fib, the best way is to wear a monitor that tracks your heart rate continually, usually 24 to as long as a week. An Echo takes maybe 45 minutes or less, so there is a very small window to make the determination. Also, what is a fast heart beat in your case?
Avatar n tn The nuclear stress test is only one test. The angiogram is the best. My mom had a nuclear stress test and then three weeks later had an angiogram which proved that her heart was extremely bad. The nuclear stress test was okay. My mom was plugged in the three arteries. Three heart valves were bad and she had cardiomyopathy. The doctors said that they did not know why she was even able to walk around. The echocardiogram did not show that her heart valves were that bad either.
Avatar n tn I have no angina and excellent exercise ability. My cardio suggested to get an angiogram to see if it really blocked or just a false positive. I'm scared of the angiogram. Isn't the new 64 slice CT scan just as good to detect blockages as the invasive angiogram?
Avatar f tn Had angiogram( 2 stents & 1 balloon angioplasty) and two days later couldn't get a deep breath. Monitored in hospital overnight, no medications given or IV. After on oxygen awhile breathing better but now five days later still can't always get deep breath. Hospital did another echocardiogram and blood enzymes and it was all very good. Oh, one heart enzyme was slightly elevated, but could be from the procedure. Good rhythm and strong beats..
Avatar n tn A nuclear stress test is about 85% accurate in finding CAD whereas a angiogram is 100% accurate. The angiogram also carries a 1 - 3% risk of complications, the most common risk, although very rare, is having an artery dissected during the procedure which results in emergency bypass surgery. Having said that, if I was told I needed one I would do it without hesitation. It is the gold standard of heart tests to determine if CAD is present.
Avatar f tn I am scheduled for an Angiogram next week. My question is what does this all mean? Also had mild regurgitation in valves. Should I be concerned.
Avatar f tn The most accurate procedure to have done is the angiogram. The angiogram can measure the pressure in your heart and check for blockage in the arteries. Medications can be taken for the pulmonary pressure and cholesterol. If you have significant blockage in the right artery, you may want to think it over about having a stent put in to hold the artery open.
Avatar m tn Im scheduled for a ct angiogram for shortness of breath with dizzyness.i saw a differnet cardiologist for a second opinion and he feels its ideal because of the ongoing shortness of breath im experiencing with meals and excersis. In the past iv had three ct scans for other health reasons not heart related. my concerns are iv had three ct scans and this next one makes it four, The amount of just one ct scan is tolerated by the body but 4 ct scans sounds excesive to me and so im really concerned.
