Avatar n tn Imaging studies report shrinkage in brain ventricles - the fluid-filled spaces within the brain - indicating that the brain is growing as the spaces shrink as alcoholics recover from alcohol dependence. "And when they stop drinking, you can show in a period of weeks, months, years, the brain grows back, there's a return of metabolic activity, and cognitive tests show a return of function," Crews said.
Avatar m tn Does anyone know or have a link to a website that describes the effects on the brain of long term alcohol abuse? I've been feeling great these last few days of being clean and sober, but I still feel foggy and confused easily and wanted to learn more about it and if I've caused permanent damage since I started drinking so young.

1563920 tn?1299288683 If you look at my past posts, I have been dealing with neurological issues for some time now. I have been very depressed about everything, from having to quit nursing to my inability to work and drive. During this time, I have been turning to alcohol to kind of deal with my problems, not such a good idea, I know!!! It hadn't seemed to be a problem until last night. A group of my friends, including my boyfriend, went out for my birthday.
Avatar f tn Also, when I drink the night before I will drink the next day and then again in the evening. Sometimes this goes on all weekend. My health issues are as follows: I feel like I constantly have bugs crawling on me. My skin is always itchy My gums bleed There is something going on in my mind. I obsess over certain sounds or pictures and they make me feel almost manic in a sense. I am developing red spots all over my stomach and they are moving to my neck and arms. - they are not itchy.
Avatar m tn m in connecticut, as far a the brain, i think it depends on how much abuse is involved, but i know memory loss is enevitible.
Avatar m tn Other serious causes are brain tumors, Alzhiemer’s, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, infections of brain, and transient ischemic attacks. Proper investigations will need to be carried out to diagnose the cause. It would be wise not to drive until then and operate heavy machinery. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
799026 tn?1238317370 Taking any illegal substance and/or alcohol will mess with your brain. Pot is one that will make you feel worse rather then better the more often you use it. I have to say though that MedHelp does not condone nor will discuss the use of illegal substances as methods of therapy or for recreational use. If you are having difficulties stopping the use of drugs and/or alcohol you can always contact NAA or AA for help.
Avatar m tn I made it my business to learn, to know, to understand all that I could about drug/alcohol use/abuse and the DAMAGE it wreaks on the user - and the heartbreak and heartache of everyone who loves the user.
1621722 tn?1333050499 Welcome to the forum. None of us are qualified to give you any sort of diagnosis, especially online. If you're using alcohol as a way to deal with anxiety and depression, you could be heading down a slippery slope. It already sounds as though you need to figure out exactly how bad your "problem" with alcohol is...and the sooner the better, before it gets any worse.
Avatar f tn So, can I assume that alcohol is hypotonic to intracellular fluid of the brain cells?? Perhaps, does this why it causes the brain cells to swell, which affects one's cognitive ability?
Avatar f tn The results of B12 deficiency due to alcohol abuse can result in damage to the spinal cord, and in severe cases, to the brain. Alcohol abuse can cause other nutritional deficiencies such as thiamine deficiency which can result in symptoms including impaired memory, visual changes, and lack of muscle coordination. Although your symptoms may be the result of chronic alcohol use, I would highly recommend that you visit a neurologist for a formal evaluation.
Avatar m tn Alcohol seriously damages the liver, the central nervous system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the heart as well as severe brain issues. Have you ever heard of "wet brain"? Long term alcohol abuse can cause a retardation effect referred to as wet brain. I've seen it in person and it's not nice...
Avatar f tn Im not really a drug taker, so im wondering if this is a normal feeling or there is something deeper happening inside my head that the drug has brought on. I know its my own fault for taking the drug, but i am really worried about how im feeling, so any thoughts on what could be going on would be much appreciated??
Avatar f tn We are not doctors here so not sure. But this sounds like a big concern. You need to talk to a professional right away. Abuse is never okay, even when a person has an illness. Also drinking and medication do not mix well and often when people are ill they may use drugs or alcohol to self-medicate.
Avatar n tn ve been in similar situations because of my alcohol abuse, but I just want to see if someone has done something as stupid as this, or if you think I should be fine. I have a doctor's appointment until Monday, couldn't find any earlier...
Avatar f tn I do know that any kind of substance abuse in the past, like alcohol or drugs of varying kinds, can sometimes cause the brain to look different than normal. BUT so can stuff like not getting enough oxygen to the brain because of arterial or lung disease... there are many reasons.
Avatar f tn t work that way. Alcohol is a drug just like the others and is just as dangerous. I never liked alcohol. In fact, I've been drunk enough times to count on one hand. However, I plan to never drink again. Why? Because the brain has no way to differentiate between the chemicals that I use to alter my mood. You're discovering that addiction actually has very little to do with the substances we take. It's a mental disease that changes the very way we think.
Avatar m tn ADD is a medical problem and the brain of a person with ADD functions differently from the brain of a person without ADD. The difficulties with attention, concentration, impulse control and activity level is part of their brain chemistry and thus, the way their brain functions. Medications can be the missing link. Having ADD is like living in a house with a window screen with large holes. You let in the fresh air, but cannot keep out the butterflies.
Avatar n tn My wife and I are greatly concerned about the natural father of our 11 year old daughter. The father in question has been abusing Tylenol and Alcohol for a very long time. Last year he overdosed on Tylenol and prescription drugs prescribed by his Psychologist as he has been recently diagnosed Psychitzophrenic and by-polar. He committed this act in front of our daughter. The last time we saw him in court he was almost skin and bones, very pale in complextion and exhibited an almost paranoia.
Avatar m tn While most people are familiar with the short-term physical effects of alcohol on the human brain, few people realize some of the long-term effects of alcohol are permanent and incredibly disabling to the brain, and can cause physical and mental impairment for life. The effects of alcohol when a driver gets behind the wheel, places the lives of others as well as his/her own at risk.
Avatar f tn Funny how they are so out of control but have the composure to know how to hide the evidence of abuse. The blows to the head almost knocked me out and my head had bruises on it for weeks after. He once chocked me until I almost passed out. I got sevier whip lash from that one. I left him soon after this attack after 7 years and thank God I never had any children with him. I am with a wonderful man now and we have three wonderful boys.
Avatar n tn The above is usually for brain aneruysms, abdominal aneruysms would be different. Which one were you referring to?
Avatar n tn then valium at night to sleep. Then he was on an alcohol bender for 3 weeks where he cut down on the pills substantially. He is back on the pills again but not as many but his behavior is strange. He blurts out things that make no sense OR he will talk about things that he may have dreamed about, as if they're real.
1032715 tn?1315984234 I'm a 47 year old female from Australia,I've been clean of alcohol and codeine for 74 days now.

My question is, he now wants to enroll in an inpatient rehab to address his issues is this possible so soon after surgery? The only problems he is experiencing are headaches and mild fatigue.
