Albuterol is a bronchodilator used to treat many of the same issues as Flovent, but it can also be used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Albuterol comes in a syrup, tablet, or as a suspension in an inhaler. Albuterol works by causing the passages to the lung to relax and open, which makes breathing easier.
Either way though, with your reactions after exercise, it sounds like a fast acting broncho dilater (some form of albuterol - Proventil, Porair, Maxair, Xopenex, Ventolin) might be a good idea. These medications can be used as a pretreatment for exercise eliminating the reaction and allowing for a better workout.

A prime question is, how was it “finally determined that I’m allergic to sulfate (sulfite?) based albuterol? You would want to be very sure that this diagnosis is correct before you proceed to eliminate a whole variety of foods and medicines that contain sulfite preservatives. Also, albuterol is available in a preservative-free form – I suggest that you check with your pharmacist on this. Primatene mist is not a very effective medicine.
i know this for a fact because my doctor showed me how to use it and watched me do it, and said it was correct. I called my doctor to try to talk to him about it but unfortunately he is out of office until next wednesday. So i guess im just going to wait until then and not take the inhaler unless i feel it is life threatening. Thank you so much.
I have multiple issues...oxygen dependent due to pulmonary fibrosis after chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis. I'm on Advair 500/50, Singulair, Allegra, Mucinex and have been stable for over a year. I also have a history of seasonal allergies (life long) and adult onset asthma. Two weeks ago some respiriatory infection set in: don't know if it was a virus intially--it felt that way--scratchy throat, tender glands, ears plugged.

Yes, Atrovent is ipratropium bromide is used for COPD. I use Duoneb which is a combination of albuterol and ipratropium. You are making me wonder if I can manage with ipratropium alone. I have never tried it. I will ask my lung doctor. I use a portable nebulizer. With that I can take as little as I need (or as much).
I will have to go back and see if I can find that one. It was really interesting. Seems to be all upside down in the way it works as to the way you would think it did. I alwasys thought when stocks were way up, it was a good thing. I will have to see if I can find it or the link to it so ya all can have a look see.
My opinion is that the wrestling career has to come to an end and it is irresponsible to use an albuterol enhaler before the matches. The coach who knows about this should be suspended from coaching. Asthma is life-threatening. If a doctor recommended this protocol his actions are irresponsible. Your son could have an attack that could end up in his death and I am certain there is not an ALS crew at the match with someone certfied in endotracheal intubation. That being said, take heart.
Foradil inhaler has an insert that states it is absolutely NOT to be used as an emergency medication. Surprise! It works well in that role, instructions to the conrtary.
Also try taking magnesium msupplements and the usual blah.blah...blah about avoiding allergins and thinking about living in a space bubble.
I wrote in to this website when my son was 4 years old and started with transient motor tics, right after having two back-to-back illnesses (with a high temperature) and also after being treated with albuterol for severe asthma. His tics have not been as bad as they were the first time he started having them, but are still present at times. He is also growing out of asthma.
People can get a bloody nose from exposure to any chemical that can irritate the mucous membranes! And albuterol is a sulfate. So yes it can. Sulfates can do this! And if this side effect is not listed, it is because it only happens to 2 % of people on it or less. However to get the drug approved easier, the studies are a bit bias and can show much less % than is actually happening!
Is he taking an anti-inflammatory along with this treatment? Or just albuterol?
I'd recommend seeing a Pulmonary Specialist as soon as you can. How long have you been taking steroid medication for your asthma? Which medications do you take, and at which doses?
If you're a mild asthmatic, switching to a non-steroid preventative like Cromolyn or Nedodromil may work for you. Theophylline is another option either instead of, or in addition to one of the non-steroid preventatives.
t like to use it, but sometimes the benefit outweigh the risk, and this is one of those times. It takes about 20 minutes, but it works quite well to restore breathing, and it dries the fluids in the lungs.
The lasix would be a great medication for followup, after the Albuterol. Then the addition of Coreg to help your heart beat stronger, and to help it move the fluid out of your system.
For starters, I'd see your doctor and let them know you are having exercise induced asthma problems. May I ask what controller asthma meds are? (Inhaler & pills, aside from albuterol or levalbuterol.) Prednisone should be a last resort anymore. Leukotriene inhibitors such as montelukast (Singulair), and Advair (diskus or HFA inhaler) are better choices for controller medications. There's other options, too, I'm just mentioning the two I use.
