Acyclovir famvir valtrex and zovirax

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir famvir valtrex and zovirax

famvir

Avatar n tn Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts. Even cheaper yet, hold an ice cube to the cold sore !
Avatar f tn Oral acyclovir or the recently developed drugs, valacyclovir (Valtrex) or famciclovir (Famvir), lessen the symptoms and frequency of fever blister recurrences for some patients. These drugs prevent HSV from multiplying and are effective when taken in pill form prior to an outbreak of the virus. Topical antiviral creams containing acyclovir (Zovirax) or penciclovir (Denavir) may also help in limiting the extent or duration of lesions if applied promptly to affected areas.
Avatar m tn acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) The rabbit hole of "natural treatments" and remedies is never ending and fraught with peril, proceed cautiously.
Avatar f tn Antiviral medication, such as Valtrex (valacyclovir), Famvir (famiciclovir), or Zovirax (acyclovir) can help suppress the virus so you will have less outbreaks and less frequent viral shedding, but it cannot be cured. However, you can still transmit the virus while on this medication, even if you are not having an outbreak. You mention you have a blister on your belly and face but none on your genitals? Do you have HSV-2? How were you diagnosed?
Avatar f tn Acyclovir (Zovirax) and famciclovir (Famvir) are similarly nontoxic. The official prescribing information for valacyclovir indicates a 1% chance of minor abnormalities of liver function in people taking valacyclovir, which was slightly higher than 0.5% for placebo. That difference was not statistically significant and there is no suggestion even for routine liver tests in people taking the drug.
Avatar m tn I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks? I have tried 600mg Acyc 3 times a day but it takes 7 days to clear up. Please advise.
Avatar m tn I have had the virus for a LONG time, and through the Valtrex and knowing my body well...I have not given it to any of my partners (Fist Pumping YES!). I don't want money to be the reason this changes. Please advice.
Avatar n tn i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Avatar m tn We assume the other 2 antivirals, acyclovir and famvir , have similar results. anything you do that reduces shedding of the virus reduces the amount of times a partner is likely to come into contact with active herpes and all 3 herpes antivirals reduce shedding similarly.
Avatar f tn acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day. is what what you are taking? correct, valtrex is the only drug studied for reduction in transmission to a partner. acyclovir reduces shedding at the same rate , you just have to take it more often. once daily valtrex is just more convenient, it's not better.
Avatar n tn What mad eyou start suppressive therapy? You might want to consider switching to acyclovir or famvir instead and see if you do better on either of those. You can even start off at a low, subtheraputic dose and gradually increase your dose over the course of 2-3 weeks and see if you tolerate that better too.
Avatar f tn not sure why your provider doesn't prescribe acyclovir. It works just as well as valtrex and is way cheaper. Having bv actually sets you up for being more susceptible to contracting hsv2. Hard to tell at this point which came first for you. It can be hard to break the cycle of bv but sounds like at this point you might have. I'm not a fan of the boric acid suppositories myself for many reasons including the pain they can cause.
Avatar f tn t really know but it does happen ( nothing officially listed on the prescribing info about this - just things folks have mentioned over the years on the various boards ). You can try switching to acyclovir or famvir and see if you have less issues with them if you don't have a vaginitis going on causing increased ob's. also if you are using any of the "heated" or "his and hers" lubes , might want to stop those too.
Avatar f tn Hi. Just wondering the different between Valtrex and Acyclovir (benefits, symptoms, cons etc.) I know that the liver turns Valtrex into Acyclovir, but are there any other things I should know when picking a drug to take? Also is taking 400mg of Acyclovir enough for suppressing viral shedding, or is 400mg 2x daily going to suppress viral shedding that much more. What is an estimated percentage of suppressing viral shedding with both aforermentioned doses?
Avatar f tn If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3115841 Here's one that showed a reduction in recurrences, but not in healing time - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar f tn If valtrex is too pricey for you on your insurance - look into famvir or acyclovir - both are available as a cheaper generic and is usually more affordable with insurances. If you've never read the herpes handbook before I suggest you give it a read. It has more info on treatments for further reading - www.westoverheights.com.
Avatar n tn most folks who do, experience it initially when diagnosed and go on valtrex and are incredibly stressed. for most , it does come back. I do know of less than a handful of folks who experienced hair loss while on valtrex, they could find no other cause for it and even after stopping the valtrex the hair loss did not stop. at this point continue to follow up on this with the dermatologist. they are your best bet.
Avatar n tn I get a burning in my skin and any little scratch turns bright red when i take Valtrex or Famvir do you think i will have the same thing if i try Acylovir?
Avatar n tn Of course that is correct waring :) Because there is more absorption of the active acyclovir from taking valtrex you only have to take it once a day. If you consult the valtrex prescribing info you'll see it compared to acyclovir in the one table and shows that they are comparable. All herpes antivirals have to prove that they work just as well as acyclovir to get approval.
Avatar f tn herpes doesn't "never go away" . even though you have hsv2, that doesn't mean that everything going on genitally is due to herpes. following up with the dermatologist if your gyn is stumped is a good idea. Many skin sensitivities that can occur and having the 2 of them work together, is often very helpful. Have you ever googled vulvodynia? how were you diagnosed as having hsv2? did you have a lesion culture done?
Avatar m tn thank u and i have one more question i have the clear and white bumps on my hands i know they are not herpes i just wondering if u had any idea what they are
Avatar m tn Famvir and acyclovir work the same as Valtrex. Different dosages, though. The cheapest one is ayclovir.
Avatar f tn Have been on acyclovir for a couple of years and my hair has gotten extremely thin on the sides and top. So depressing as this works for suppression. now I read that this seems to be more common aide effect than manufacture is aware of. Have read that valtrex also has the same side effect. how about Famvir? This is soo depressing and is the hair loss permanent?
