Difference between valtrex and zovirax

Common Questions and Answers about Difference between valtrex and zovirax

valtrex

Avatar f tn Acyclovir (Zovirax) and famciclovir (Famvir) are similarly nontoxic. The official prescribing information for valacyclovir indicates a 1% chance of minor abnormalities of liver function in people taking valacyclovir, which was slightly higher than 0.5% for placebo. That difference was not statistically significant and there is no suggestion even for routine liver tests in people taking the drug.

Avatar n tn Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts. Even cheaper yet, hold an ice cube to the cold sore !
Avatar n tn Hi Tony, You need anti-viral meds (zovirax, valtrex, etc) to treat herpes. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in the penicillin group of drugs. It fights bacteria in your body.

Avatar n tn I have seen a couple doctors and they have prescribed me with zovirax cream, valtrex pills for a week, lots of different things, but not one thing has made a slight difference. They are now saying they cant help me unless i get a full out outbreak. Any ideas here? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Avatar f tn it had not gone away in months , never got big or anything , just itched , I had a swab done and it was neg and blood work and was negative. Avatar f tn Hi there I get regular coldsores, often just before my period, but lately more regularly and in more places around my mouth. I know about Lysine but notice no difference when I do and don't take it. I try to have turmeric regularly also. Oh and I use 5% Acliclover Cream (ie Zovirax). I can get 500mg Valacliclover Tablets but they're a bit out of my budget to take daily and I don't want to damage my kidneys.
Avatar f tn She took bloodwork and with give the test result to me on Monday (after New Years). Meanwhile she prescribed a cream and Valtrex to be used for 10 days (BID). My question is that since both of them are antivirals, should I use Baraclude and Valtrex together for these 10 days? Under warning "drug interactions" it says not to take Valtrex while taking Baraclude. Please help me with this, not sure what to do.
Avatar m tn Well yesterday I felt a tingle similar to what I feel when I get a breakout on my lip, but this time is was above my lip, between the lip and the nose. As it turned out I was at the doctor yesterday for my physical and he said it looked like I irritated myself shaving (ingrown hair maybe) and said put some vitamin E on it. I did that but, then at night it started to look like the herpes cold sore I get on my lip so I put some Zovirax on it.
Avatar f tn He has had about 6 outbreaks in the last 60 days and the most recent was more than 4 lesions all over his bottom lip. Besides the zovirax ointment, which is difficult to administer since his lips are so sore, are their oral meds vs. topical that would be effective and safe? My pediatrician says he's too young for suppression therapy, but I've read other places that it's available for children under 12. Very frustrated, and just want to give my son some relief.
Avatar f tn I guess I am wondering if it really reduces the viral shedding (What is the difference between shedding and an outbrea anyway) or transmission to an uninfected partner? What about L-Lysine and something about kelp that helps to reduce it too. I guess I am just confused since I dont know what an outbreak really is! Sometimes I forget that I have this....
Avatar f tn my doctor said its the same drug as valtrex but with valtrex you can get away with taking it once a day. I also dont have insurance and can not afford valtrex so thats why im taking this generic. I take 400mg acyclovir twice a day (which was very hard to get used to, but you have to!) and I get 180 pills (90 days) at Hy-Vee (grocery store) and Sam's club for $10. Other pharmacies charge upwards of $80 for just 30 days.
Avatar f tn I recently went to my gyn for an ulceration on my labia , it was very small, she dida swab and it came back negative, she put me on valtrex and I wound up with a reah on my body , after 3 weeks of being off valtrex i developed a chronic sore throat. The ulcer went away, she gave me zovirax cream and now I have redness and itching and small blisters, I went to my general doc for a blood test and it came back positive for HSV1. .
Avatar m tn So I immediately called my doctor and got a prescription for Valtrex. I took the valtrex and no break out occured but the tingling remained. So I went to the dermatologist and she prescribed more valtrex with a higher dose. At this point I started getting tingling in my hand (thumb and index finger). I can't remember if it was caused by the valtrex or if I have HSV-1 on my fingers.
Avatar m tn no - herpes doesn't cause dry lips. Even with oral herpes - lesions heal in between and lips would return to normal. dry, chapped lips are fairly common - especially this time of the year.
Avatar n tn Hello, I have genital herpes and I just had an outbreak two weeks ago, I took Zovirax as always, 200mg 5 times a day for 5 days... I finished the treatment and one week after (now) got another outbreak and it is worse...is that possible? isnt it supposed to suppress it? I live in europe and they do not have the valtrex suppressive therapy, do you know if i can take another supressive therapy?? should I take now another zovirax treatment even though i finished one 2 weeks ago??
Avatar m tn Thanks to both of you for our timely responses and help. I have taken quite a bit of medication (valtrex & zovirax) for about 50 days or so. Some of the Valtrex came from a pharmacy (about 20g), but most of it was ordered from an online place that doesn't require a prescription (risky and possibly fake I realize). I also took Zovirax for about 9 days or so, with no real results. Also, I did see my doctor 2 days ago and he said he didn't think that it was my HSV either.
Avatar f tn About 6 months ago, after a long night of having sex with my partner, I began to have some vaginal irritation. I saw my gynecologist because the irritation began to worsen. She done a swab & a week later informed me that I had herpes. The partner I had been with of course insisted he did not have herpes. After several antibiotic treatments, as a precaution before the diagnosis, and after taking Valtrex and using Zovirax cream, the irritation stopped.
Avatar n tn I get a burning in my skin and any little scratch turns bright red when i take Valtrex or Famvir do you think i will have the same thing if i try Acylovir?
Avatar m tn no, his gf should not taking it. there is no benefit in her taking it when she's not infected. also if she starts it now, all it will do is make it take longer until she finds out if she contracted hsv2 from him or not. valtrex was not the first herpes antiviral either.
Business woman1 NEXT time at the very earliest hint that you might be developing a sore, ask your doctor for an anti-viral prescription such as Valtrex or Zovirax. If taken early enough, these can abort the outbreak. If you have already got the sore, they can shorten the number of days that you have symptoms. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn This sounds similar to my situation as I have never had any outbreaks or sypmtoms either, yet I was given the Zovirax and the valtrax pills. Do I take the pills daily despite this fact?
Avatar f tn I have a rash on both hands, palms, fingers and moving to top of hands between fingers, had it for 2 1/2 months now. I've been to an infectious disease Dr. 2x's, said it was Raynaud's. I then went to a Dermatologist, said it was chronic eczema, she gave me Pramosone2.5%, I get temporary relief. I have HSV 1 & 2, had it for 10 years, I take 500mg Valtrex daily and I have zovirax.
Avatar n tn I have used Zovirax (sp) topically in the past and it has helped. It is another anti-viral medication.
