What is the difference between concerta and ritalin

Common Questions and Answers about What is the difference between concerta and ritalin

concerta

Avatar f tn There definately is a difference between Ritalin and Adderall. Adderall is stronger. For instance, if a person is on 30mg of Adderall and wants to switch to Ritalin,..you will need aprox. 50 to 60mg of Ritalin to be equivelant to the 30mg of Adderall. I am on 60mg of Adderall daily. I wanted to try Ritalin again just for the heck of it. I have shown proof from reliable sources, to my Doc that he needs to give me MORE than 60mg Ritalin for it to be effective as 60mg Adderrall.
Avatar f tn I also have a seven year old son who was also diagnosed with adhd about a week ago and because of his size he is also on 36mg of concerta and it is making him calmer at home, but when I talked to his teacher today she said that she is not seeing any improvement at all. How long does it take this medication to stat working completely?
Avatar f tn ve read about extended release focalin verses extended release concerta is that focalin works faster (within 30 minutes of taking it) and is better for a child that needs the help prior to leaving for school and that type of thing. So, it is reported that it begins working fast in the morning and continues to control symptoms during the day and then tapers off at hours 10 to 12.
Avatar m tn Whilst taking the meds, I noticed that the veins in my arms, hands, stomach and along the shaft of my penis expanded in size. I also had increases in bp to about 160/70. Since stopping the veins are still more prominent than they were before. I have less desire to have sex. I have an enlarged varicocele (which became larger after ritalin/concerta). Initially (for about two months), whilst I was on Ritalin I experienced increased libido and experienced really intense erections.
Avatar f tn The conclusion of the first study was, "which could result in further decreases in dopaminergic signaling when the individual with ADHD is not medicated (i.e. over weekend holidays)." duh, of course you will have less dopaminergic signaling when you are off the medication. The whole reason you are on it is to increase the signaling. Also, it was billed as a long term study - and it lasted one year.
Avatar n tn I also remember being embarassed because I had to take medicine to behave and could not just do it myself like the other kids could. I know what it feels like to be on and off the medicine. The plus to being a smart kid is you are able to tell when the dose is too high... at least I could. I have 4 kids myself and have been a foster parent I know the difference between a "behavior problem" and an underlying problem. I do agree that the last time we went to the dr.
Avatar f tn I think that you are seeing one of the side effects of the medicine. Usually, and I am not an expert, it means that the dosage is too high. You might ask the doctor to reduce it. How much is he taking? You could reduce it by splinting the pill or oprning the capsule and reducing the medicine inside. Also the "immediate release" kind of Ritalin seems to have more side effects than the "slow release" kind. The slow release form is smoother on the system.
Avatar f tn My son was on the concerta and got tics from it and when he was taken off of it, about 6 months later the tic had dissapeared completely. Check out the info on www.cbn.com and type in ADD and look for the article on curing children with ADD/ADHD. Also type in the search area L-theanine and look for the article on Feeling a little unfocused. Both are great articles and help to understand more on what other things are out their besides drugs.
1523516 tn?1330044257 and then I feel better about an hour or two later. Still very fatigued and focus is about the same, a bit better I guess. I will say that the Baclofen has really been helping my spasticity at night which helps me sleep a bit better. I would like to know if anyone else is taking Ritalin and how your body has responded. Thanks friends!

Avatar n tn Pull him off Ritalin and try Concerta and try it in lower to higher doses. Ritalin at a higher dose was hard on my 10 yr old. He was diagnosed with ODD when he was 5 and it takes time. We got over hurdles by therapy, putting him in extracurrricular activites. He is now on Concerta 54mg in the morning and takes 5mg of Ritalin in the afternoon. Concerta has been great, no side effects or anything. We had bad reactions with vyvvanse with my 6yr old - as in hallucinations big time.
Avatar m tn Concerta is an extended release form of Ritalin. Which is what I took when I was a kid. It is still a stimulant but it is much milder than Adderall. I think more doctors should start patients Concerta because it has fewer side effects than Adderall. I've never seen anyone have side effects as severe as you described from Adderall with Concerta. I still have some side effects from adderall. But I never remember having any from Ritalin (immediate release form of Concerta).
2083581 tn?1332307861 I have heard wellbutrin works well with Ritalin but I would like to here from someone with experience. Ritalin is the only drug that has ever helped me but when it wears off I am depressed again. (and I have tried Concerta and did like it) Any suggestions?
Avatar n tn Yes, it is possible. While the active ingredient in Concerta is the same as in Ritalin LA, the method of metabolizing the medication differs.
Avatar m tn Concerta is of the methylphedamine type or in the same class as Ritalin, it is just newer than Ritalin and thus formulated differently. So something you might offer up to your doctor is a medication that was one of the first used in ADHD treatment and that is Adderall, which is of the amphetamine class, which is more pure in form. This as any of the stimulants, can be addicting but may be something else to try than these medications made specifically and only for ADHD.
797195 tn?1240579823 However, all of the sudden my blood pressure started to go up. I am not sure if the long term use of Adderall is the reason, but while investgating information, I found out that Canada does not allow the use of Adderall because of side effects. I just switched to Concerta today. I'll let you know of my results if you wish.
Avatar n tn Adderall is not the only medication. You might you doctor to try a different medicine such as Ritalin or Metadate CD. These are still stimulants, but in another family of stimulants. Good luck.
Avatar f tn p.s. his symptoms seem to have come back full force. It's as if the body adjusts and the meds quit working so im at a loss what I should do. After school's out I plan on trying the intuitve out and seeing how it helps. I didn't want to change him while he's still in school. The doctor says it builds up in the system and should have a longer lasting affect once its taken for a few days.
356518 tn?1322263642 I have seen to many horror stories on it. Including my own family memebers. My son is ADD and is on Concerta... Concerta is great... It is as close as you can get to ritalin and it not have the bad effects like ritalin. Maybe you should try it. It is expensive though. the 27mg dose is like 100 CDN a month. But works well.
Avatar f tn Hi Bill! Wow - 54 mg? Did you start off on a lower dose? That sounds awfully high... I've been on methylphenidate for about three years. (I take the brand Ritalin, but I'm pretty sure Ritalin and Concerta are about the same thing.) I started off on 5 mg, three times a day (of the non extended release) and I got a lot of benefit from it.
Avatar m tn What can I do if I have been red flagged? I have been going to the same psychiatrist for over 5 years and have been recently given Concerta about 4 months ago. My original diagnosis was depression/anxiety disorder and he believes I have a learning disability. During this time, the Concerta dose moved up 3 times and was given a new script. Some of these scripts were turned in during the same month. The doctor added on ritalin on a separate script one month.
Avatar f tn Hello all! I have had attention problems since icould remember. Im 24 now. But only in the year or so I've realized that it has actually caused a lot of problems study wise for me. I feel constantly bored or loos interest in the smallest tasks and tend not to sleep allot because it feels like I can't switch the conversations off in my head. I only really realized that my behavior was a bit odd, when my friend kept telling me that I walk around and interrupt allot of people in class.
Avatar m tn ve readed about Penis length decrease etc, my penis is not that small, but did/does ritalin/concerta/methylfenidate affect erections / penis length? Sorry for my bad grammar.
Avatar f tn I can see being on V and perhaps adderall in the late after noon. Or concerta and ritalin in the late afternoon. Since the Concerta/ritalin are the same type of meds. Same thing for Vyvannse and Adderall. Point being, why was the V not working for you? What symptoms did you have. I would think that the two could have been over dosing you. Did you ever try just V alone?
