Common Questions and Answers about What is namenda used for

namenda

Avatar n tn Namenda is used to treat Alzheimer's dementia. This suggests a positive diagnosis for Alzheimers. Find out if this is so. Plavix is a controversial drug. It prevents clotting. It also increases the possibility of a stroke from a bleed. One question in my mind is whether he had a stroke which caused him to fall, or he fell and struck his head and sustained a concussion or bleed inside the brain which, in turn caused the dementia. You need to question his physicians.
Avatar n tn No need to worry. I used to teach classes on different Alzheimer's Medical treatments/medicines and know these meds better than the reps that sold them. Namenda is an add on Alzheimer's medication use to help glutamate regulation in the brain. The standard dose in 20mg a day after titration, so taking three 5mg tablets is not a problem.
Avatar f tn At any rate it seems to be a fairly safe drug with few side effects. I am very glad that is has been effective for you. Again thanks so much for sharing.
585414 tn?1288941302 Yes I am somewhat familiar with that. For example Namenda which is used to treat dementia is in clinical study as a mood stabilizer and to treat tardive dyskinesia. However as those medications specifically effect those receptors by mitigating their activity they work in an opposite manner to glycine and the NMDA receptor modulates.
20003388 tn?1515166040 m just curious if anyone has been on Namenda and could tell me how long the initial brain fog lasted for you? I just started Namenda yesterday, 5 mg a day for 1 week then 10 mg a day in divided doses. I have memory issues and severe cognitive impairment. I was put on Namenda by a neurologist after a thorough examination. I expect the brain fog from starting Namenda up but am just trying to get a time frame for when I could expect the initial brain fog to wear off. Thanks everyone.
Avatar f tn com/namenda-side-effects-drug-center.htm What dose is she on? Maybe adjusting her dose will decrease the dizziness. Talk to her doctor.
Avatar n tn He was recently diagnosed with moderate Alzs although we think he has been undiagnosed for years. He is currently hospitalized and physically restrained because he became combative in the nursing home. His ammonia level was elevated but has come down. However, the agitation/aggression hasn't changed. The dr started him on namenda last week. Has anyone seen this kind of aggression from namenda?? HELP!!
Avatar n tn When I read how your mom was on Zoloft and Namenda - this is exactly what my dad is on so I thought I would ask you how your mom is/was doing. Did she stay on Risperdone? Thank you so much for your response.
Avatar n tn Hi Margypops, Axona is a brand-new prescription therapy launched in March 2009 for the treatment of mild-moderate Alzheimer's disease. As Alzheimer's is marked by a decrease in glucose in the brain (the primary source of food for the brain), Axona acts by providing/metabolizing glucose in the body to act as an alternate source of food for the brain.
Avatar n tn I have bilateral trigeminal and occipital neuraligia. I have been told this is uncommon to have both of these conditions and have each of them on both sides. What could be causing me to have all of them. I am under pretty good control as I take neurontin and namenda. Before I was put on namenda i was having rhizotomies almost every three months due to the excruciating pain.
Avatar f tn this is known as off labeling...where a drug is intended for one purpose but used for another....in this case insomnia......
Avatar m tn Have you tried off-label Namenda at 25% of the dose given to the typical patients that it is meant for? That drug has significantly helped my migraines. And what about Botox injections? That does not interact with your body systemically. Those have helped me tremendously. If you haven't tried these, I would consider them before taking Phenobarbital, but it's up to your judgment of course.
Avatar f tn I have advanced tardive dyskinesia. Ativan can't cause it. In fact Klonopin which is related is one medication I take to treat it. Vistaril and Tradazone can cause tardive dyskinesia. Any medication that causes it can continue to worsen it while masking it. The first step is to see a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist. Then have your psychiatrist prescribe you medications that can't cause it (a sleep aide that won't cause it for example is Rozerem).
Avatar f tn It did nothing for me, so not much help Corrie!
Avatar n tn Have you tried any of the anti-epileptics? Usually the first one that is tried is Topamax. That helped me for awhile. The only side effects that I had from it were some numbness and tingling in my hands and feet. They say that is pretty normal. I also tried Lamictal, Keppra, and Depakote. The drug that I have found the most relief from is actually an Alzheimer's drug. It is called Namenda. There has been some research that has shown that it helps to prevent migraine.
Avatar m tn You can find her posts in the archives, and she should be a good source for you. However, glutamate is considered largely for depression because it is stimulating to the brain, not calming. On the other hand, if you reduce glutamate and, presumably, one of its precursors, glutamine, you run the risk of muscle wasting. It is also involved with GABA production.
Avatar f tn Very interesting section on cognitive issues is found about half way down, well worth reading for tips and tricks, medications etc. I know i sound like a broken record, but have you looked if there are any cognitive side effects of the medications you take, sometimes something will exacerbate an issue and changing a medication is better than adding another, to me its definitely worth looking into the possibility at least. Hugs............
Avatar n tn I would speak to his doctor but make sure they know what medications he is taking. My grandfather had the same problem. First of all his doctor changed and titrated his blood pressure medications and also they found Namenda to be quite helpful.
Avatar m tn Ativan is an anti-anxiety medication. Seroquel (the brand name for the other medication you speak of) is an antipsychotic and from what the prescription label states it should not be used in people who are elderly who have dementia but you could discuss this with a neurologist, in the meantime look up the medication website. Namenda is one of several medications that helped some family members I know who have dementia.
