Avatar m tn I take Warfarin (rat Poison) not to use penis ring because it can cause a clot!!
Avatar f tn I've heard people in hospital tell the nurse that they refuse to take 'rat poison' and I think it's important to put this into perspective. Warfarin was first developed as a pesticide because it was noted how a small dose of anticoagulant would cause rats and mice to hemorrhage to death. So it was deliberately developed as an anticoagulant and it was found to have other uses, such as saving lives in humans suffering a thrombus.
Avatar n tn Warfarin doesn't dissolve Blood clots! your body in time absorbs the clots. Warfarin thins the blood to help prevent clots it's used in rat bait after the rats eat the bait they leave the nest to drink and bleed to death and we also consume the rat poison! Did your doctor say why you're on it after three years? I take warfarin because I have to factors for having clots, Prothrombin and Lupus Anticoagulant.
Avatar n tn Where are you located? I looked at your 'profile' but couldn't tell if you were in the US or UK. If in the US, I believe you can get in touch with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Centre the number is: (888) 426 4435. They may be able to give you more detailed advice? There is a lot of info. on their site, and I think you can access information about toxins and their effects on your pet. Even if you live in UK you may find their site useful.
1796911 tn?1315605346 Gourmet for a few years now he lists the vitamin K on everything and has great vegan recipes. I also eat some fruits that thin the blood so I can take fewer doses of the rat poison (warfarin). I would rather thin my blood with food than drugs. If you would like a list of fruits that thin the blood just ask me. You have to be consistent with any food so as not to change your INR to much. Just make sure you speak to your doctor first.
Avatar m tn Dont you find this strange 4 days of the dog being in the hospital all fine and healthy and happy all of a sudden he dies of rat poison? I had a dog in Canada that ate some rat poison in an office and within minutes was convallsing and shaking and throwing up. If it was not for my mothers fast thinking to take my dog to the vet and get some vitamin K into her she would have been dead.
1763947 tn?1334055319 Coumadin (warfarin) is the active ingredient in rat poison. That being said, Coumadin is dosed, for humans, in a manner which prevents blood clotting (especially for those at risk), and does not act as a poison at the therapeutic dosage level. (However, when rats ingest the high concentrations of warfarin in rat poison, they bleed to death, internally.)" A longer, better and more precise answer is found on Wikipedia.
1569985 tn?1328247482 You really do need to be off of your blood thinner to have a colonoscopy. Don't stress over it too much. Believe me, if you don't stop taking it they will either cancel the procedure or give you fresh frozen plasma to counteract your medication. That is a waste of good blood products. Tell the doctor who prescribed the Warfarin (I hope you don't call it rat poison too :P) and I'm sure they will tell you it is ok, and to resume your normal dosage after the procedure.
Avatar m tn The dog being in the Animal for four days without showing any symptoms of Coumadin or warfarin intoxication, No Nausea, No Vomiting, No loss of appetite, no drowsiness or weakness? I had a dog in Canada that got into some rat poison and was convulsing in second and foam at the mouth and vommiting we had rushed our dog in Canada to the vet where the vet administered Vitamin K and my dog lived.
738075 tn?1330575844 OK, so I'm recovering from my 3rd attack this year, and last Friday I started having R ankle and leg pain. I figured I had CRPS from all the spasms in my legs. But Nooooo - You ready for this? Deep Venous Thrombosis!! Sheesh, so now I'm on rat poison (Warfarin) for the next 6 months on top of everything else! I really don't think this year can get much worse - thank goodness it's almost over!
620966 tn?1222895656 After someone has a pulmonary embolus they need warfarin for at least 6 months to prevent further pulmonary emboli. Warfarin for this indication is far better than aspirin. The reason to take the warfarin as one dose in the evening is that the blood tests (INR) are frequently done in the AM and then the dose can be altered that same evening if the INR indicates a change is needed.
Avatar f tn Oh you poor thing! I am so sorry for you and the tragic and traumatic ending to your dog's life. I don't think it was rat poison (warfarin) because it does the opposite: causes the blood to lose its ability to clot. You might consider posting this question to Med Help's veterinarian, Dr. Cheng. Look on the right side of this page down around the middle, and click on the Ask a Vet link. Again, I'm so very sorry for you both.

10218090 tn?1408580560 I have no knowledge of poison affects, but I understand rat/mouse poison is in fact a blood thinner that causes uncontrolled bleeding, sounds like that was not the case with Cookie. I believe Rat poison is the most widely and some times loosely used. Have you looked up the symptoms of arsenic - not sure how that could end up laying around in a park. Typing, maybe arsenic is what is in rat poison.
Avatar n tn Hi lebs I know exactly what you mean. I 'suffer' the same thing. Initially my heart rate would sky rocket up to 200 bpm, and be very erratic. I suffered that for about six years, on and off usually 2-3 times a month, lasting between 2-8 hours. Just recently I also get extremely slow rates, down to 38bpm, which is very exhausting. I take Flecainide, and Asprin, can't take the rat poison Warfrin as it kills my stomach.
Avatar f tn t get help and I have seen that no help will be available in the hospitals. I must use rat poison, warfarin, and it (INR) must be measured two times per week. I cannot be free, eg. travel. I am very angry. Even very small things can bother me and cause personal changes - and then, after a moment I am very OK. I am an academic person, pensioned, writing a large book for students. The work goes well if I don't have the anger.
Avatar f tn Those are likely to be symptoms of rat poison ingestion, but also other symptoms could be....for instance lethargy loss of appetite....anything. The scary thing about dogs eating rodents is that they are more than likely to get one which has been poisoned. Those will be the slower, easier to catch ones, and that's why they get caught in the first place.
Avatar f tn The affect on your dog depends on what the rat ate, if poison that could be a problem. The fact your dog regurgitated means some, maybe most of the rat was discharged from the dog's system. Do you know if the rat was dead when the dog found it, or did the dog capture and kill the rat? If the rat was already dead, then the concern about what killed the rat is most important. I believe the rat poisons used in the USA are rather fast, and cause internal bleeding.
461010 tn?1208482459 I hear despair in Your voice. You must try again - one day at a time, one hour at a time. An alcoholic deceives HimSelf (HerSelf) when She thinks She can drink in a 'controlled' way. "Denial" is powerful !! The ONLY way to recovery is to abstain COMPLETELY. You would not drink "a little" rat poison because You think a 'little' rat poison is better than a lot of rat poison !! (sarcasm intended). Alcohol - same thing !!
566934 tn?1259142643 He checked her and advised that she has bleeding in her stomach possible but needs to run further tests and that she may have come in contact with rat poison and that he needs to xray her to see if she has a hole in her stomach from this ...
Avatar n tn d consider finding out just what your neighbors/local pest cotrol are doing for rat control. It would give you a heads up on when poison is being used so you can keep the little killer in for a few days.
Avatar n tn Do you have oleanders in the yard or any other poisonous plants? Could she have gotten into some rat poison? It takes about 24 hours for rat poison to kill them. It looks purple most of the time. You might want to check your yard for it. I hope that helps. So sorry again for your loss.
653169 tn?1303446369 I'm also on the rat poison Warfarin!! The only problem with any supplement Is not all of them will effect your pt/inr But WILL thin the blood!!! You have to be Very careful doing this!!
Avatar m tn Yes, take the dog to the vet immediately. There is an easy blood test to tell if the dog's blood is coagulating properly. At least there is such a test for humans, so I assume the test can be run on dogs also. Most rat and mouse poisons are anticoagulants, so that is the concern. I doubt that the amount of anticoagulant in one mouse that was killed by the poison would harm an average size dog, and it sounds like your dog hadn't even eaten the mouse that you found.
Avatar f tn She died last week after getting sick really fast. The emergency vet said it was rat or mouse poison ingested 3-5 days prior. I do everything organic, there is no poison in my house or yard and I am shocked and so saddened and angry about this. I've read a lot about rat poison since then and a dog can die from eating a poisoned mouse or bird or from eating a dropped pellet.
