Valtrex for cold sores during pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex for cold sores during pregnancy

valtrex

Avatar m tn I have suffered from cold sores for about 8 years, with at least two outbreaks a year. I recently had a baby, and she will be 7 weeks old tomorrow. I am incredibly stressed out though because I have struggled with cold sores since her birth, getting one right after the other. I understand that my daughter should be protected by my antibodies until 3-6 months, and that they are very protective, but may not be 100%. I have been very careful not to kiss her and to wash my hands before I touch her.
Avatar f tn Hi! A few years ago I became very ill, during that time I developed cold sores. Since then I get one at most two cold sores by my nose a year. I am now 14 weeks pregnant and pretty much then entire time I have had a horrible cough then about two weeks later I got a cold sore. I didn't think much of it, but here we are weeks later and I have had at least 6! I have had a cold sore every single day in some stage of healing for weeks! I told the maternity care specialist at my appointment.
Avatar f tn She suggested doubling my acyclovir dose until then. For cold sores after delivery, she recommends a high dose of valtrex and being very careful around the baby.
Avatar f tn I hate coldsores sooo much and have tried everything...for the pain, I guess you can use tylenol and have you every heard the rememdy for canker sores...??? People use liquid Benedryl and baking soda??? Can you use Bened. while preggo??? You would use this as a topical cream soooo maybe you could try it....anyway good luck and keep it covered with chapstick!!! hopefully it will go away soon....good luck...
Avatar m tn Thankfully, he tested negative for the virus. I actually did not have breakouts during my pregnancy (they had decreased in number considerably as I entered adulthood), but after he was born/while I was breastfeeding, I was having outbreaks practically one on top of the other (likely exacerbated by some dental work I had done, along with hormonal fluctuations, stress, and lack of sleep). Anyhow, at the prompting of several doctors who cared for my son, I went on the suppressive therapy.
Avatar f tn There are several very atypical aspects to all this. Recurrent shingles is very rare. Were all of your "few episodes" professionally diagnosed, and tested for the singles virus? Or for HSV? How about your cold sores -- also professionally diagnosed? Were those outbreaks in your mouth, on your lips, or where? Assuming you indeed have oral herpes, almost certainly it is HSV-1, since they began in childhood; and almost certainly your recurrent genital herpes is HSV-2.
1472764 tn?1287591786 Also, I do not believe Valtrex is safe during pregnancy in case you take it. Lots of women with HSV2 go on to have healthy pregnancies but if you have any type of oubreak, precautions need to be taken during delivery.
Avatar n tn I had 3 cold sores in a row my 1st pregnancy, then 6 months ago I had a miscarriage, however did get a colesore the 5th week of the pregnancy. I'm pregnant again 6 week pregnant and I have not had a cold sore, the first time I really want to have one because I had them in my other pregnancy's. Do you think everything is ok if I don't get one this time?
4333925 tn?1359106042 rite aid or CVS sell Herpecin L. it is used for cold sores and fever blisters. not only will it reduce any pain you have, but it will cover it up to a degree and the healing time is cut in half. i use it and it works. it's a lip balm like chap stick.
Avatar f tn When I was a few years younger, I had a boyfriendfor over year that gave me herpes (always forget what type but it's the kind that are usually cold sores on your.face). My doctor says it won't be a problem with the birth as long as I take a suppression treatment (valtrex, or generic for about a month prior to due date once a day).
Avatar f tn The lesions that occure are most definitely cold sores- I have classic symptoms each and every time. For me, they are hormonally and stress induced. I have been getting them for about the last 6-7 years now. They weren't always this frequent, but they have been since right before I got pregnant with my first. I even have outbreaks at least 3-4 times during pregnancy. This sore on the top lip is mostly on the inner mucus membrane, but really *just* on the inside, bordering the outside.
Avatar n tn With the HSV 1 do we have to worry about passing it on to our kids? I have had canker sores but no fever blisters or cold sores that I can recall. Neither has my husband. Could I be asymptomatic, or maybe the HSV 1 is manifesting itself in the genital area? My hubby has a major germ and doctor fobia, so I know we'll have to work through this together. First I am going to have to convince him to get tested. Then, we'll have to work through making sure this doesn't affect our sex life.
Avatar n tn i have the exact same thing below the right shoulder blade its like a numb cold feeling, its been happening for a week or so and ive been worrying about it. does anyone know what it is exactly, or is it just sleeping on it weird?
Avatar n tn Both were during/shortly after dinner, and both were during a higher stress period of preparing for a big Thanksgiving meal for my family. My episodes start out as feeling like my blood pressure hits the floor, then a fiery tingling in my chest that radiates up toward my head and shoulders. In the past, nausea and diarrhea have followed shortly after along with hot-cold and feeling like I'm going to die. These symptoms last 30-60 minutes, or until I fall asleep.
Avatar n tn The symptoms that you are experiencing of a red spot and tingling could definitely be the start of a cold sore, even if you haven't had one in years. Yes, you could start the Valtrex, and the recommended dose for cold sores is 2 grams, then 12 hours later, 2 grams again. Your concerns about your family, though, are interesting. If you simply avoid kissing people when you have a cold sore, you won't pass this virus to them.
Avatar f tn Thank you for the answer. In our case , is it safe for me to receive receive oral sex from him? He doest have cold sores.
Avatar m tn There are several of us on here who have a similar eye complaint: seeing a bright flash, like the afterimage of a flash bulb, when we blink, and sometimes, on upgaze. This is transient symptom for most of us, lasting anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. When the "spot" in our visual field passes over a dark background, the spot appears light. When the spot passes over a light background, it appears dark.
Avatar f tn Since the time of my initial outbreak of genital HSV-1 nearly 10 years ago, I have only had one other episode. It occurred during the first few months of my pregnancy two and half years ago. I am no longer married to the man who gave me genital HSV-1 from his cold sore, but I am remarried. I was very honest about my exposure to HSV-1, and he has been more than supportive. I was his first sexual partner, so there were no concerns that he was a carrier of any disease.
Avatar n tn A couple of months later when I went to planned parent hood and got a peice of mind test it showed that I tested positive for hepres 1 (which casues common cold sores). Is it possible that the swap test came back positive beacuse I already had the herpes virus in my system? How will I know if I have genital herpes if I never get another outbreak? Am I able so use Valtrex? Will it still treat the genital herpes, if I do have it, if I take valtrex as if I was treating a cold sore?
Avatar m tn I understand that most cases of neonatal herpes occur in situations of a primary infection of the mother late in pregnancy (no time to build antibodies to pass on to the child via the placenta), but there is a small percentage due to post-natal transmission via contact with cold sores. Thanks, and I apologize for this rambling post and any confusion!
Avatar f tn I found out I had herpes with my first pregnancy I wasn't surprised because I have had cold sores my whole life and I knew that was a form of herpes. If you have vaginal herpes then you will have to have a c cection if you have a outbreak while in labor they would normally give you medicine to prevent that.
Avatar n tn The virus moves in here, takes a long snooze, and every now and then decides to wake up and cause a cold sore. But not everyone who gets the herpes simplex virus develops cold sores. In some people, the virus stays dormant (asleep) permanently. What causes the virus to "wake up" or reactivate? The truth is, no one knows for sure.
Avatar m tn Thank you for your answer. Yes I'm living in the US, Hsv2 was my welcome present when I arrived to NYC... No I didn't recall the results. I'm gonna wait for it. I tryed to show it to my Dr . but when I went to his office I was not able to get a appointment before 2 or 3 weeks, so..... In my case, when I got an outbreak its for almost 1 week, 10 days before everything get back to normal. I'm working on a 3 month detox project, with a professional herbalist. We never know...
Avatar n tn It looks fairly conclusive that you have HSV-1 -- the strain of herpes that is typically associated with cold sores. Many people with this strain don't ever remember having a cold sore, but even so, it's most likely that you have this strain orally and have had it for a long time. Your HSV-2 score is not positive, but equivocal. Most people with equivocal results are truly negative, something like 90 - 95%. Having HSV-1 can skew these numbers.
Avatar n tn And yes, it could also be the STD that you may have gotten or hubby got from 10 years ago or way before you met and neither or you knew as it was dormant and came out during pregnancy. It is possible. What is important is that you get on Valtrex to stop any outbreaks prior to giving birth, no matter which type it is. It definately sounds like it though. AND, will NOT show up on a STD test UNLESS you currently have an outbreak. AND, herpes can be contracted at ANYTIME, showing signs or not.
495035 tn?1221756692 I have always wondered if this outbreak of cold sores, that is unusual for me, could have something to do with what caused this attack? My Neuro thinks that I had ADEM, Is the epstein virus a trigger for ADEM too? I know that ADEM can be triggered by viruses and immunizations, So I guess it is possible! Quix said that the immune can rare up with immunizations, but I wonder if it can happen with a medication reaction too?
Avatar f tn They arent a STD but they show as the same type of herpes virus in blood work. Just like cold sores. HPV is a herpes virus too. Thats why I thought they may prescribed the Valtrex. Each doctor is different.
101028 tn?1419606604 my point is always that you can't make educated decisions about precautions until you know who has what - even if you aren't entirely sure about who has what where. As for the article on valtrex and mandatory herpes testing during pregnancy - the article posted I don't feel does a good enough job of explaining the entire story behind this all.
Avatar f tn Even if I'm taking Valtrex daily he and I both could get oral herpes quite easily right? Thanks for your time. Any insite is appreciated.
