Hi I have been taking Valtrex 500 mg every day for suppression of HSV1 for about a month and a half now. I have been getting headaches in my temples a lot and honestly don't know if it is because of that. I also am on birth control and have been for the past three years but did just chance from ortho tri cyclen lo to regular ortho tri cyclen, about three months ago. Do you have any advice? I am in college and these headaches make it very hard to study. Thank you!
Honestly the outbreaks are better than they used to be. I quit taking valtrex because of the headaches, and I was starting to get a rash-which happened to me before. I already have bad migraines. She was only giving me 1 pill and day- and she recommended 2 x a day for 10 days. I don't think I can tolerate it. I would love to find another alternative with no side effects.
3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....
I have been off the Valtrex for 5 weeks and going into week 8 since exposure and am going crazy with worry! I just have to ask about all the people that have no sores or lesions. Is that really true? I went back to the PP Clinic Dr. for the continued left side vaginal burning and my legs are always feeling numb and tingling and she said herpes almost always presents with multiple painful sores?? Also I have had this brown discharge and different odor than I have ever had and the Dr.
most folks who do, experience it initially when diagnosed and go on valtrex and are incredibly stressed. for most , it does come back. I do know of less than a handful of folks who experienced hair loss while on valtrex, they could find no other cause for it and even after stopping the valtrex the hair loss did not stop.
at this point continue to follow up on this with the dermatologist. they are your best bet.
acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
After I posted this I talked to the hospital doc about my negativ test result. She didnt think Valtrex had interferred with the results. I have had "herpes symptoms" four months, taking Valtrex last four weeks.
Maybe I could have a new test taken in a couple of weeks when my system is clear of Valtrex? Just to be on the safe side?
Just no it is all too confusing. One doc says: HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes.
Thanks for the reply. Well if valtrex doesnt affect the results,wouldnt 55days be enough for conclusion? As doctors say 6weeks is quite enough for antihiv tests except cemotherapy patients?
Finally I broke down and in seeking relief on four ocassions and took 2000 mgs of Valtrex and awoke syptom free only to have the symptoms return the following evening. It seemed to help for a short period. Since I had nearly nine months straight without suppressive therapy would it be OK to take the WB now? It has been 26 months since the initial episode. In total I have had at least 11 months without suppressive therapy which includes the first nine months of possible infection.
About a month before I actually got tested, I started having daily headaches. Nerve Pain in my head etc. I had a break out and was a bit sick for a few days with dizziness, dry eyes, upset stomach etc. The break out went away and I was still having daily headaches, burning sensations on my head, face and eyes. My doctor sent my to a Neurologist that had me get a MRI of my brain. The MRI was clear for suspected meningitis.
If I stop it for a week do I wait to see if symptoms persist? If not begin again, or ask my doctor for an alternative? If so what should I be asking for and are they as effective as Valtrex?

I am really worrying that I have contracted disseminated, drug-resistant herpes, including ocular herpes and herpes encephalitis, and don’t know what to do. I am currently still taking Valtrex 1g twice a day, but feeling that it’s not working. I am considering increasing it to 2g twice a day again, which seems the only way that helps. Meanwhile, I am concerned that this may cause further drug resistant. What should I do now? Please advice and help!!!
(I myself experienced headaches on Valtrex and had to switch to ayclovir for this reason.) You might want to try switching to acyclovir. You have to take it b.i.d. instead of q.d., but each dose is lower and may prevent tingling sensations, if in fact the tingling is being caused by the Valtrex. You can try it and see.
I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
I recently was diagnosed with Herpes I've yet to go get a blood test done but I was put on Valtrex. I was so scared that I went and bout an Oraquick test I tested negative, two days later I still couldn't get it out of my mind and went and got two more tests while on Valtrex and all three said Negative. I know this question is asked over and over but, are my test conclusive even on Valtrex? My last exposure was 9 months ago if that wasn't clarified?
The side effects of the Valtrex seem to be diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, headaches and lack of appetite. The symptoms were prevalent before beginning the Valtrex. Does this mean I was too late in starting the Valtrex or does it not help with already noticeable symptoms? and is just for suppressing symptoms before they can be noticeable? Also these symptoms have been in full force for about 3 weeks.
ve been taking 500mg of Valtrex every night and plan to do so for the next year to year and a half as suggested by my doctor. I have had no other outbreaks since the first one. My doctor explained to me that taking Valtrex on a regimen would help the virus become dormant. I was wondering what that meant specifically in terms of my likelihood of transmitting the virus to sexual partners with or without condoms.
