I'm day 5 into taking Topiramate 25mg at night for migraine prevention. My migraine is a daily pressure headache at the base of my skull. I have Chiari malformation type 1 but neurosurgeon says I don't need surgery, thankfully. He and my neurologist advised i try Topiramate as Amitriptyline didn't suit me (made me suicidal) and my asthma prevents them trying me on beta blockers.
Topamax is used to prevent migraine. It will not stop a migraine that's already occurring. It is not a pain medication.

I have been getting dizzy spells which the doctor calls vertigo for 7 years now. I have 2 kids and can't even take care of them. I don't even trust playing with them. I can't move right. I try to move left and move right instead. I vomit and cant even keep water down. I get disoriented and it happens around the same time each day but will go away for a few weeks and come back. I don't know what to do.
My wife is 49, white female, who has experienced migraine headaches throughout her life (1 per mo ). She has been post menopausal for 10 years. She is not taking any hormone replacements. She has ITP (platlets <100K). For the last 1.5 years she has been experiencing more frequent migraine headaches (2-4 per week). She is seeing a neurologist who has her on 100 mg/day of Topomax and 40 mg/day of Prozac. She also takes Imatrex with the onset of a migraine.
I am currently on Keppra and Topiramate and have just been told my latest tests are showing major kidney damage from the topiramate. I have been on these two meds since 2002. I have to admit, reading all this is very scary. NO Other Meds have worked to control my seizures ! PERIOD!! Plus I have severe Migraines and Short term memory is almost gone in a matter of seconds. What is a girl to do?

He was on a very high dosage for what was diagnosed as a variant of migraine. He was taken off a few years back because of the memory loss. He has great long-term memory but cannot remember what he had for dinner an hour before. When he was one, he had his first “episode.” Initially, it was thought to be epilepsy. After some testing and monitoring, that was ruled out and then diagnosed with migraines. Being a migraine sufferer myself, I doubt that that is his condition.
She recovered completely but since some years ago she developed a chronic migraine. Of course we went to a lot of neurologists, made tomographies, magnetic resonances, etc. etc. and everything looks ok.
Currently she takes 75 mg of Topamax (topiramate) in the morning and 75 mg more at night. Additionally, she takes 1 or 2 Acetaminophen (650 mg) daily and when the pain is very strong she takes 1 Maxalt (Rizatriptan) 10 mg.

Recently the Doctor moved the dosage up to 300 mg. Several months after that he started experiencing migraine headaches. Since then he has been to 4 Neurologists, had two MRI's, a Lumbar Puncture, a Blood patch from the lumbar puncture. He has had Toradol injections, Imitrex injections, been on all types of pain meds. The first MRI showed a cholesterol granduloma in his peatrous appex.
I had an MRI of the head done w/out contrast and Sinusitus showed but nothing else. However, I was diagnosed with silent migraine or migraine equivalent by my neuro. I was given Topiramate and Maxalt. The Maxalt did absolutely nothing and the Topiramate put me through two weeks of constant dizziness and vertigo not to mention a couple of panic attacks. I quit the Topiramate and had severe withdrawal symptoms that put me in the E.R.
I used to take Trokendi XR, an extended release form of topiramate, the seizure medication. It helped for about four months at the highest dosage then the headaches came back.
Any suggestions or thoughts? I have an appointment with a new neurologist soon to get a new opinion but am in a lot of pain.

My neurologist did once mention something about high pressure? Possibly high intracranial pressure?
Some of the common side effects of topiramate that are seen when it is used as a preventive therapy for migraine are tiredness, mood swings, anxiety, insomnia, depression, pins and needles sensation and difficulty with language.

The trembling of hand could be because of increased anxiety and difficulty in speech due to trouble with language.

Topamax or topiramate is a seizure medication, which is also used to prevent migraine headaches in adults. However, it will only prevent migraine headaches or reduce the number of attacks and will not treat a headache that has already begun. Celebrex or celecoxib, on the other hand, is used to treat pain or inflammation including headaches. Medication effect usually varies from one person to another. What is effective to one may not be as effective to another.
Paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs), triptans, ergot alkaloids and anti-emetics are used for treatment of migraine. Topamax (topiramate) is indicated in adults for the prophylaxis of migraine attacks. Hormone therapy may help some women whose migraines seem to be linked to their menstrual cycle.
In the meanwhile, you may try some stress management strategies, such as exercise, relaxation, and biofeedback to reduce the occurrence and severity of migraine attacks.
It will take awhile. I have chronic migraine so I have been on topiramate several times but every time I got on I remembered how awful the side effects were and why I decided to go off in the first place, (besides it did absolutely nothing to help my migraines) and I lost A LOT of hair too. it would seriously come out in clumps in the shower, we would have to vacuum every day because there would be so much hair on the carpet.
t had the follow-up appointment with my neuro yet to discuss where to go from here, but I am wondering if the drugs (topiramate) that I am currently taking for migraines affected the results in any way? I was prescribed and began taking the Migraine drugs by a different doctor a couple of months before I took these tests. Maybe 2 months.
Also, the side effects of this drug are terrible making my initial MS-like symptoms even worse.
I have been a long time sufferer of migraine, After reading the posts on this website i have deduced that my type of headache is an ocular migraine. I get an aura of a small dot in my field of vision in my left eye that steadily gets worse untill i have zig-zag arc shapes that flash with colours red,white green and blue. This usually starts in my left eye and then progresses into both eyes, and near the final stages leaves via my right eye.
I want too if someone can plz answer TOPAMAX TABLETS IS IT THE SAME AS TOPIRAMATE BECAUSE I AM IN EUROPE AND THIS IS THE ONLY BRAND AND UNDER THIS NAME HERE AND WILL IT HELP ME WITH WEIGHT LOSS
