Avatar f tn Topamax is used to prevent migraine. It will not stop a migraine that's already occurring. It is not a pain medication. You can read about it at Topamax.com.
1104710 tn?1258034139 ok ok , I started topiramate for 2 moths now, the first month the cravings was less, and after a month the doc, change the dosage, now I'm on 50 twice a day, I don't think its working. I haven't lost any weight, does this meds take time?? Should I been seeing result ? am I wasting my time? I really haven't been experiencing the side effects, little bit at first, but nothing to cry about. If anybody have any advice please any is helpful!
Avatar f tn gov listed several studies sponsored by Ortho-McNeil which propose to examine the use of topiramate on migraine, cluster,[18] and severe headaches within various demographics. Other off-label and investigational uses of topiramate include: treatment of bulimia nervosa,[19] obsessive-compulsive disorder, treatment of alcoholism,[20] smoking cessation,[21] Pseudotumor Cerebri, and treatment of neuropathic pain.
1230912 tn?1273492770 Now she put me on Topiramate and while some of the side effects scare me I really want to get rid of these headaches! I am on 1 pill every night for a week, then 1 pill twice a day - I have to work my way up to 2 tablets twice a day for the full effect and she said that it can take up to a month for it to start working effectively. Does anyone else have any luck on this medication? Anyone having the horrible side effects on it (that pretty much mimic MS symptoms?) Anyone losing weight on it?
1415174 tn?1453243103 Hi, I understand your concern regarding this and like any other medications, side effects may or may not occur depending on the patient as well as if there are drug interactions with patient's present medicine. Topiramate extended-release capsules may cause drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, trouble concentrating, or vision changes. But may be worse if it is taken with alcohol or certain medicines. It is best that you check with your doctor for proper management. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn I had a lumbar puncture 2 months ago & am still miserable. The day that I had it done I had such severe vommitting and vertigo that I had to be rushed to ER. They gave me a couple IVs and anti vertigo & nausea meds. I was in bed for 6 days before feeling better. I never got back to "normal" but good enough to work and function, but now the past few weeks I have had so much pressure in my head, neck, and shoulders that all I can do is lay on the couch.
Avatar m tn I have chronic migraine so I have been on topiramate several times but every time I got on I remembered how awful the side effects were and why I decided to go off in the first place, (besides it did absolutely nothing to help my migraines) and I lost A LOT of hair too. it would seriously come out in clumps in the shower, we would have to vacuum every day because there would be so much hair on the carpet. I looked it up online and found many others losing their hair from Topamax.
Avatar m tn I have been advised to take Celebrex or Topamax for headaches. Which treats headaches/migraines better? Which has had more success?
Avatar f tn t know about the side effects. I think I would rather have a migraine than deal with the wierd side effects that I am having. I go in this Friday to have my PFO closed. I have heard that this can get rid of headaches completely. I am praying that that is what is in it for me. I am having it done as stroke prevention as it has not been approved for migraine at this time.
Avatar m tn My neurologist switched me to Topomax for something else, and told me I would drop the 10 lb I'd put on. Instead it revved up my brain and made me manic. I was unable to keep doing the job I was doing and resigned, not realizing it was the drug causing me to be so anxious and hyper. It was a really good job except for one manager, who was nuts, and all I could focus on was that person.
Avatar n tn I started taking Topamax a week ago tomorrow, I can tell you as strange as it may sound the only side effects I have had so far would be the tiredness, and that is not even that bad just over sleep a little in the AM. I have also lost the taste for my beloved diet coke. Other then that I have not really seen anything major going on. I am on 25mg to start and will go up to 50 mg starting next Friday. I am curious what will happen then but good luck to you.
Avatar m tn I have been getting dizzy spells which the doctor calls vertigo for 7 years now. I have 2 kids and can't even take care of them. I don't even trust playing with them. I can't move right. I try to move left and move right instead. I vomit and cant even keep water down. I get disoriented and it happens around the same time each day but will go away for a few weeks and come back. I don't know what to do.
Avatar m tn I had an MRI of the head done w/out contrast and Sinusitus showed but nothing else. However, I was diagnosed with silent migraine or migraine equivalent by my neuro. I was given Topiramate and Maxalt. The Maxalt did absolutely nothing and the Topiramate put me through two weeks of constant dizziness and vertigo not to mention a couple of panic attacks. I quit the Topiramate and had severe withdrawal symptoms that put me in the E.R.
Avatar f tn Other relevant drugs are naproxen, anaprox, naprelan, ibuprofen, advil, motrin nuprin, pedia care, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs etc. topiramate or topamax is indicated as a preventive medicine in migraine headaches. So let your physician prescribe you any of the above medicines, while you could have one of the over the counter analgesics. Take care.
Avatar f tn I had my first migraine when I was 12 and they became chronic and literally everyday after two car accidents. (Rear end and head on). I am soon going to b getting my nerves on my c3-6 burned to help with the headaches and neck pain. I'm only 23 yrs old. I had to quit my career (cosmetologist) I loved it and right before my migrianes randomly became daily I had an offer to become a redken color artist and do hair in big time hair shows up on stage with many famous hairstylist.
Avatar n tn the problem with us having BP that if we substitute one med for another is only to alter the side effects to another set of side effects. I can't remember one drug with no side effects. As to the valproate it gives weight gain and sorry but it's known to cause ovarian cyst which can be unwanted for girls. As to Topamax i don't know.
Avatar f tn ( So the weight loss is one of the better side effects LOL. The biggest side effect for me was the hands and feet (and sometimes lips) tingling. Not all the time but especially in the beginning. Numbness too. They weren't bothersome enough for me to stop taking it, though. I hope it works for you.
Avatar n tn There may be accompanying ptosis, lacrimation, conjunctival injection and miosis on the same side as the headache. Other secondary effects can be experienced, which are inability to organize thoughts and plans, exhaustion and depression and social isolation. There are certain known triggers like chocolate, sleep or even lack of it, banana etc. treatment Is ineffective with painkillers. Specific drugs like abortive and prophylactics.
Avatar n tn I didn't "jump to conclusions without doing research"... as I noted, I've been taking topamax (topiramate) for a couple of years and I've looked at the side effects more than once. I'm well aware that weight loss is a side effect and many people who use it for other things do lose weight on it; however, it's not "often" actually given, solely as a weight loss aid, due to other possible adverse side effects, such as loss of eye sight as well as others.
1232362 tn?1333135406 Hi, Abruptly stopping Topamax or Topiramate may lead to withdrawal side effects such as confusion, loss of hearing or sight, fear, panic, convulsions, difficulty talking, falling down, seizure and other associated symptoms like eye rolling or fluttering, foot stomping, lip smacking, grunting or making sounds, shaking, stiffening, sweating, tremors, and twitching. This is usually tapered tapered off by your doctor by adjusting the dosage gradually over time. talk to your doctor about this.
1597714 tn?1299828089 The onset of action of topiramate to reach steady state is about 4 days in persons with normal renal function. CNS side effects may be minimized by initial slow titration or small reductions in other medications with sedative effects. These effects usually diminish over time. The mean plasma elimination half-life is 21 hours and it is excreted in 4-5 days. It may cause eye problems like sudden decrease in vision with or without eye pain and redness, secondary angle closure glaucoma etc.
