I'm day 5 into taking Topiramate 25mg at night for migraine prevention. My migraine is a daily pressure headache at the base of my skull. I have Chiari malformation type 1 but neurosurgeon says I don't need surgery, thankfully. He and my neurologist advised i try Topiramate as Amitriptyline didn't suit me (made me suicidal) and my asthma prevents them trying me on beta blockers.
Usually drugs like beta-blockers which are given to control hypertension (propranolol [Inderal], atenolol [Tenormin]), anticonvulsants (topiramate [Topamax], divalproex [Depakote], carbamazepine [Tegretol]), tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline [Elavil], nortriptyline [Aventyl]), and calcium channel blockers (verapamil [Covera]) are given.You can take these as preventive medicines .

The Topiramate, amitriptyline and nortriptylene are meant for people who have many headaches and are given one of these meds as a daily preventative migraine medication which your father should not consider. Good luck to you.
I am currently on Keppra and Topiramate and have just been told my latest tests are showing major kidney damage from the topiramate. I have been on these two meds since 2002. I have to admit, reading all this is very scary. NO Other Meds have worked to control my seizures ! PERIOD!! Plus I have severe Migraines and Short term memory is almost gone in a matter of seconds. What is a girl to do?

However, I was diagnosed with silent migraine or migraine equivalent by my neuro. I was given Topiramate and Maxalt. The Maxalt did absolutely nothing and the Topiramate put me through two weeks of constant dizziness and vertigo not to mention a couple of panic attacks. I quit the Topiramate and had severe withdrawal symptoms that put me in the E.R. Blood work, urinalysis, chest xray, and head CT w/out contrast all checked out fine.
How does Rolaids or tums help with the tingling sensations caused by taking topiramate?
t help you if your taking medication for your seizures due to me having a relative that has them. It is not safe do to take both birth control and Topiramate due to them mixing up. Topiramate would make the birth control less useful , so it'll be just a regular pill your taking, it won't protect you due to the Topiramate.

By the way, amitriptyline is an antidepressant, that is true. But there are better antidepressants today and amitriptyline is not used a lot for depression anymore. However, it is still used as a headache preventative, one of the most effective and cheapest there is. If you get prescribed amitriptyline for headaches it does not mean in anyway that your doctor thinks you are depressed. It has nothing to do with that.
I've recently been going to a neurologist for a very difficult time with temple pain and upper jaw pain on the right side. For the last two months, I've tried Gabapentin, Amitriptyline, Imitrex, Butalbital, Propanynol and now Toppomax. The doc at first thought it was migraines, but I was not convinced. I can look directly at the sun any time, listen to loud music and have no nausea. The pain is constant has has been. It throbs and seems to stem directly from the temple.
I am a 36 year young female and was told I have a right parietal meningeoma of 4mm. It is supposed to be in my frontal lobe. About a week later an EEG was done and indicated sharp discharges in both hemispheres of my brain. I have been having horrible headaches since at least 10/20 of this year that get to the point of nausea. They are sharp and never completely go away. Just vary in intensity to more bareable at times than others.
It may also make you lose weight but they will probably give you amitriptyline as well which makes you gain weight and increases your appetite. I have been on this and it has helped a lot. I also get stomach pain and vomiting with my migraines so you may have a variant like I do. I don't know what part of California you live in but UCLA has some really good migriane specialists as does San Diego . But if you can't come down here look for one in your area it is worth it.
I found the combination of Amitriptyline and Topamaxx with Valium or Zanaflex to relax the muscles have given me the most relief. Also, I am considering steroid injections to the nerve to help with the pain, but not Kenalog. There are pudendal nerve specialist that you can google. Dr. Conway in New Hampshire can diagnose nerve pain and his colleague gives injections. There are a few across the country.
Current list of meds Topiramate (topamax) 50mg 1 tablet 2 times daily, Amitriptyline 100mg 1 tablet at bedtime, Cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) 10mg 1 tablet at bedtime, and Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine (fioricet) 1 tablet to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
And my ENT has me on Diazepam 2mg 1 tablet 3 times daily.
I'm wondering if it is the Topamax, or the combination of meds, or the Chiari? I guess I'll have to play phone tag with the NL office today and see what they think.
The IRBB does not usually cause chest pain by itself, but can be seen in the setting of a heart attack by infarcting part of the right bundle. The amitriptyline does have anticholinergic effects and can cause coronary ischemia in patients following heart attacks. How sure are you that the pain you had was secondary to esophageal spasm and not heart disease?
I was sitting on the edge of my bed and then suddenly my vision went all red, like I was wearing red sunglasses, and I fainted and fell onto the for and was out for maybe a minute. when I came to again my vision seemed fine but I was disoriented. I did not have a cluster during this last night but this morning when I woke up I did. I'm used to the clusters and the feet tingling but have never experienced the red vision.
I was going to a neurologist that specialized in migraines and she gave me Topiramate which totally took away the vertigo and double vision. I get a very slight bit but not the kind that knocks you over now and only a few seconds. I was also told to go to an ENT to rule out Meniers disease and they checked my hearing and looked in my ear and did a CT to rule out a tumor behind the ear called acoustic neuroma. They were all negative. If positive for the Meniers they give you water pills.
He has recently given me numerous trial medication to see if my current state and headaches would improve including apo-acetazolamide (250 mg) and ratio-topiramate (25mg). With acetazolamide not working, and topiramate worsening my state. After being on topiramate for 3 days, I had a general feeling of confusion, disorientation, trouble with my memory, and trouble concentrating.
I have been doing some research and it looks like I should not have gone off amitriptyline cold turkey even though that is what my doctor said I would have to do . The only problem is I decided to go off it when we decided to do it with out protection. When we decided to do it with out then there was no choice I had to go off the amitriptyline. What I should have done is try going of it and see how I feel instead of in the moment doing it without protection and then having no choice.
I am not sure if anyone can help me out with this but I have a friend that is on Topamax (Topiramate) for seizures and she just found out she is 7 weeks pregnant. She had been pregnant before but had a miscarriage. She is very scared because she can’t find any information on this medication to tell her if or if not this medication will hurt the baby. She has seen the OB/GYN and they told her they are not sure and she needs to speak with her Neurologists.
Has anyone taken this? What does it make u feel like and does it actually work for migraine?

A moderate drug interaction occurs between Topamax and yaz. Efficacy of oral contraception may be decreased by concomitant use with topiramate. You have to use additional birth control measure. Also There may be changes in the bleeding patterns.

I use to take amitriptyline and have some pharmacy background. I suggest no drinking with amitriptyline to be on the safe side. Amitriptyline plus alcohol could equal respiratory depression, which means possible passing out or in fatal cases even death. It's just not worth the possible complication even if it is only a 0.10% chance of happening.
