He said they had never looked into this. Also, I have recently had episodes of memory loss. I know that this is a side effect but will it go away if I go off of Topamax?

Does any one taking topamax for migraines have the problem of memory loss? Especially word loss when speaking or writing? I know this drug is nicknamed stupamax for a reason. It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...

Many who have taken Topamax cannot tolerate it. The side effects often progress into painful nerve "zaps" and memory loss. I was taking it .. cannot handle the side effects. While the taste thing is horrid, its the "slowness" of my brain that I can't deal with. I had the same problem with Neurontin .. makes me feel like my synapses are on slow motion.

I am on topamax now and some side effects are hard to deal with. my dr is decreasing my dosage. my side effects are that my arms and legs are numb and tingling like pins and needles and I am very tired I have diahreea alot. you have to stay in contact with your doc while on the medication.

I was on Topamax for about 3 years for sever migraines and saw nothing different with my thyroid problems. I researched Topamax and here are all of the possible side effects (doesn't look like your hair loss or thyroid problems can be attributed to Topamax): Autonomic Nervous System Disorders: Infrequent: vasodilation. Body as a Whole: Frequent: syncope. Infrequent: abdomen enlarged. Rare: alcohol intolerance.

I had all the classic side effects which included memory loss, staggering, slurred speech, and so on. They were rough but not horrible. I actually had some fun with them at times (I do have an odd sense of humor though) Everyone is different so it may help. It only seemed to make my symptoms more pronounced. Good luck.

The cognitive side effects also went away after a couple of months. After about 3 months on Topamax and getting to my maximum dose, I was getting minor headaches and virtually no side effects. The best thing about Topamax as opposed to other migraine drugs is that it doesn't make you gain weight. Topamax gave me my life back.

Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.

p.s. I also had excellent memory but Topamax kills your short term memory. Has he had an Electroencephalogram or EEG)? This would tell if it is seizure or migraine. There are a few times of EEG's. The drooling and muscle issues you mention are not side effects of the drug. If they are they don't list those. So either he has another problem or needs to get off the drug.

s side effects are commonly confused with weight loss. Side effects are loss of appetite, however this may affect people in different ways. And being that this is just a side effect of the drug, and not the purpose of the drug itself, it does not mean that it will neccessarily happen. Sometimes the brain is so powerful that it can override the drugs side affects of appetite suppression. Truthfully, some people happen to lose weight while on the drug, some people don't.

Then I read that heightened ammonia in blood can lead to kidney stones, hair loss and confusion...all side effects of Topamax. So, my thinking is that adding water and maybe some milk thistle or other liver supporting supplements may help tip the balance back. I am not sure those things work, this is just my theory on my limited research and there may be much larger issues at play. However, water and milk thistle can't hurt...right?

So, be mindful of the side effects if you decide to take the topamax and the higher the dose the more severe the side effects. What happened to me may not happen to you. Good luck!

issue with dilantin is the long term side effects....causes teeth problems GI issues and a list of others.......best of luck and If I can please let me know I will ghive the advice from my own personal experiences if they seem to meet what you are saying....

I am only 17, i went to the neurologist and he suggested topamax, i have not had a single headache since! Topamax is wonderful and has no side effects that could effect younger people such as myself or your daughter. I would highly reccomend asking your doctor about starting this medication asap!!!

I took Dilantin for a very brief period of time and was quite happy to get off of it. Right now I am actually on Keppra and Topamax and they have both kept me seizure free for over 3+ years and I have no side effects. My memory isn't that great but I'm not sure I can blame the drugs. The two of those as a combo, for me, are wonderful!

Atypical antipsychotics can have a lot of side effects. If you think your memory problems are from the seroquel, talk to your doctor about changing your meds around. If they're for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, you'll need to stay on some sort of antipsychotic, but different ones have different side effect profiles for different people. If it's for bipolar or as an add on for depression, you can switch drug classes entirely, which might work better for you.

Mine did, and now I can only feel it a tiny bit if my feet are in the same position for a long time (i.e. computer chair rail). It definitely has a side effect of weight loss. In fact, some doctors prescribe it specifically for that reason. (In people who are overweight, and don't suffer from migraine.) I lost weight almost immediately.

( So the weight loss is one of the better side effects LOL. The biggest side effect for me was the hands and feet (and sometimes lips) tingling. Not all the time but especially in the beginning. Numbness too. They weren't bothersome enough for me to stop taking it, though. I hope it works for you.

I am on my 2nd week of Topamax. Get ready for some very strange side effects. Your hands and feet and face will tingle and fall asleep. I have no appetite at all. I can go from breakfast to dinner of the next day and not be hungry at all. I have to force myself to eat. I'm forgetting things. I went to Wal Mart and forgot what i went there for.
