Avatar f tn Does any one taking topamax for migraines have the problem of memory loss? Especially word loss when speaking or writing? I know this drug is nicknamed stupamax for a reason. It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...
Avatar f tn IMITREX (SUMATRIPAN) TWICE DAILY FOR 2 TO 4 YEARS (VS) OmyGosh..I'm Margie. Many years ago, I had chronic migrains. Bad ones that were debiliating to my marriage and career. For years, I used the nasel or pill form of Imitrex. I, at the time in my life, was also going through a bunch of "Garbage" as I call it.. e.i., multiple tragedies back to back. I believed, at the time, that the onslaught of such stress was the reason for my memory loss in my years of 41-52ish.
Avatar f tn Many who have taken Topamax cannot tolerate it. The side effects often progress into painful nerve "zaps" and memory loss. My husband was on it for 3 months and had bizarre personality changes and suffered from severe depression until he stopped taking it. My advice would be to change to something else...

Avatar n tn I have been taking Imitrex for years and it is great for my migraines; but I am 53 yrs old and have memory loss too. I have short and long term memory lose . I was wondering if anyone else is having the same trouble?
Avatar f tn I haven't had any trouble with my knees. I read the other post and was thinking that they might be two separate issues. Did you ask the doctor about the knee thing? I didn't see that listed as even a rare side effect. However, side effects are tricky little things! I take Lyrica daily and get botox injections in my neck and temples about every 5 months. Headaches are by no means gone, but I can work through/with them.
3219519 tn?1345993889 1) need to know if Topamax, that my doctor prescribed to me for weight loss will really make me lose weight, 2) How long will it take to start losing the weight, 3) does topamax require you to do alot of exercise in order for it to work? 4) what are the side effects of topamax? If anyone can answer this I would be truly grateful! Thank you all for reading and have a blessed day!
Avatar f tn I have neuropathy of my feet all the way up to my knees and now in my hands and in one spot on my face, i was an undiagnosed diabetic for YEARS!!!! I know that pain all to well. I suffered years w/o any meds ( started when i was 21 and I am 47 now) I started on Tramadol and codeine together 5 yrs ago and 4 days ago Topamax was added.
Avatar f tn The other cause could be Topamax if you are taking it. Long term treatment with Topamax has resulted in memory loss in many patients with complicated migraine. I would suggest you please consult an experienced neurologist about it as other causes of memory loss and intellect like neurological lesions like brain tumors, white matter disease also need to be ruled out.
Avatar m tn He said they had never looked into this. Also, I have recently had episodes of memory loss. I know that this is a side effect but will it go away if I go off of Topamax?
Avatar m tn hi, i have been having bad migraines for afew months now, they made me dizzy, have memory loss, shakey hands, muddle up words even nausea. i will go to bed wiith the migraine and wake up the nrxt morning with it still. should i be worries?
Avatar n tn I don't know if anybody else is having these type of problems with Topamax. I was put on 50mg 2 weeks ago for migraines and since then I am having some died effects that I see are common tingling in my face hands and feet, memory loss, inability to sleep. But I'm also having some other concerning problems worsening headaches, neck pain and back pain and dizziness and nausea. Are any of these symptoms going to go away or has anyone else experienced these not as common problems?
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
Avatar f tn Hello! Hope things are working out for you. Topamax either works for you or does not. I have had migraines (5 a week) for 13 years and I have been on Topamax for over six months now. I can honestly say it has some great points and some bad points. In the beginning, I had the side effects such as the "pins and needles", numbness, memory loss, etc. That of course was when I was gradually going through the stages of increasing my dosage keep in mind.
1558393 tn?1299070031 I had all the classic side effects which included memory loss, staggering, slurred speech, and so on. They were rough but not horrible. I actually had some fun with them at times (I do have an odd sense of humor though) Everyone is different so it may help. It only seemed to make my symptoms more pronounced. Good luck.
Avatar f tn There was somewhat more memory loss than the normal memory loss of depression. Bonce reminded, I usually got it back. The procedure is not scary unless you dislike short-term anesthesia, and, of course, you're not conscious for about 5 or 10 minutes. Where I went I was doing this outpatient. The saff and medical personnel were pleasant and respectful.
Avatar f tn Topamax becareful with that it caused me a week of memory loss. Some meds will put you to sleep but you would need to watch that so you wont grow dependent on them. I have the same problem with insomnia. If I were you I try to go the natural route if you could.
Avatar f tn ve taken Depakote before, but stopped because of weight gain and hair loss. I am 22 years old. Just about 2 days ago I started noticing some Topamax side effects... Like "i can't find the right words to say" or "finish my sentences" Have you ever experienced this? and do these side effects go away?
Avatar n tn I have suffered the weight gain problem but on Lithium. I love all the other results of Lithium as a mood stabilizer but it made me gain 30lbs and I could never lose the weight and I really tried with dieting and exercise when I never did either prior to being on Lithium so I know it was the cause. My current doctor has put me on Topamax to prevent the weight gain. I've only been taking it about 3 weeks now and I'm at 100mg/day. I've already lost 10lbs .
Avatar m tn So i posted this comment to try and get some answers from members who may have not experienced hair loss so it will encourage her to go back on Topamax as the pain has become worse also her Fatigue. I recommend you find a post on this site or the internet related to Topamax and Fibromyalgia and print it off and take to your Rheumatologist as there are 1000's of patient prescribed with Topamax in which to treat Fibromyalgia.
Avatar f tn About 1.5 yrs now I have been on Topamax. Also around that time, my thyroid started acting up. I started losing my hair, cold hands and feet, feeling very tired, bad memory etc.. Now my symptoms have escalated. My memory is to the point where I can’t even remember simple words. I am depressed all the time and can’t get out of bed during the day. Then I can’t sleep at night. I'm having a hard time separating the side affects from the Topamax and the thyroid, which got me thinking.
Avatar n tn Hi, Transient global amnesia mainly affects the memory function. Other symptoms are- Confusion, Sudden memory loss, slow come back of memory, Headache, Nausea and vomiting, Mental shock, Visual disturbance, Sweating, Rapid heartbeat, chest or neck pain ( less common). There have been some rare cases where patients of TGA have suffered seizures during the attack which is not a normal manifestation of TGA.
1415174 tn?1453243103 Hi, Well I got my migraine variant when I was 23 and it took them 8 years to diagnose me because I would not get a migraine headache or aura but would get throwing up and abdominal pain when I went to bed. I finally found a doctor that said I had a migriane variant and he did an EEG which was abnormal for a migraine/seizure pattern. They can't differentiate it because it was just high signal. I was put on Clonozepam and I am now 50 and haven't had the vomiting /abdominal pain since.
Avatar f tn He was taken off a few years back because of the memory loss. He has great long-term memory but cannot remember what he had for dinner an hour before. When he was one, he had his first “episode.” Initially, it was thought to be epilepsy. After some testing and monitoring, that was ruled out and then diagnosed with migraines. Being a migraine sufferer myself, I doubt that that is his condition. He wakes up okay and a couple of hours into his day, he loses his “battery” charge.
