topamax

Avatar f tn Hi, I am taking Topamax for my bulimia. I have suffered with this for So so long. I was on topamax once before and it did help quite a bit, for quite awhile. For an unrelated reason, I had to stop it. I just began it again, and I have to say, I am having a hard time staring it. The side effects are much more exagerated then what I remember. Severe anxiety, depression and extreme senistivity to touch. I was to start with 50 mg a day...and increase from there. I just can't.
Avatar f tn org for more information or just google topamax. My Way Out is mostly for drinkers because topa has shown to be very helpful in that area. The worst side effect for me on topa was feeling extremely irritable. I didn't want to be a mean mom, so I had to go off it. The only other solution for me would be to combine topa with wellbutrin or prozac or something else to curb the anger side effect.
1343409 tn?1296026007 I did find one positive reaction from topamax that was unexpected; I had been battling bulimia for 30 years and since being on Topamax , my thoughts of weight, food, calories, ect isnt a thought anymore. Its as if it never existed. One time I tried to go off the topamax because I was having to many memory issues and being a RN that doesnt work well for me, I noticed the eating issues popped up right where they left off. Once I went back on it within a few days, it changed.
Avatar n tn is both mental and physical problem, therefore it must be fought on both fields. OA is a great tool for the mental aspect as for the physical I am using topamax to fight this. I beleive that this will always be part of my life, whether I am "using" or not, it will be something that I will have to guard against. I find in times of great stress (like now) it tends to be more prevalent. Anyhow, do take some potassium supplements and B complex especially B 12 and Fish Oil.
Avatar n tn Is anyone out there a binge eater that would like to get into contact to help recovery? I've had eating disorders for the past 10 years...anorexia, bulimia, recovered on my own for a bit, but now after starting a career and having more stress in my life, I'm not normal anymore. I binge. I went on topamax for a bit and this helped but didn't like the weird side effects and I know I can't rely on drugs my whole life. I'm 26 and just want to be normal with food.
Avatar f tn It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????
698519 tn?1228122694 If you are not in the 12 step program, please consider for both your alcohol recovery and recovery from bulimia. American Psychiatric Association Eating Disorder Guidelines reports that 22% of bulimics have criteria for alcohol abuse. You are not alone. It would be wise for you to seek out an eating disorder treatment program to focus on your specific needs related to your bulimia. Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
Avatar f tn You initial post asked whether diabetes and bulimia are related and you received answers. For Bulimia concerns you need to post on the Eating Disorders forum.
Avatar f tn m currently battling with bulimia and am trying to swap my habits for exercise however my thighs and bum have always been my reason for personal disappointment, if anybody could help me with which exercises prove the best results in these areas I'd be so greatful
Avatar f tn I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
Avatar n tn Except for my teenage and college years, when I struggled on and off with bulimia for roughly 10 years. I stopped completely about 5 years ago, and have never had another episode. Last year, I suddenly started experiencing heart palpitations. I went through the whole workup - Holter monitor, stress test, echo, cardiac MRI, and then another 2-week event monitor. The doc said I'm having PVC's and a few runs of NSVT, but otherwise my heart looks structurally fine.
Avatar n tn I am recovering from bulimia, and have been for about three months now. I was bulimic for 7 years (I started at age 16), and only ceased for two healthy pregnancies. I didn't realize all the harm I was causing to my body. I really don't know much about it, but I guess I am curious if my body will ever get back to normal. How long, if ever, will it take for your metabolism to return to normal? Is it possible to get cancer from throat damage?
Avatar f tn It is also Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for, and now most frequently prescribed for, the prevention of migraines. It has been used by psychiatrists to treat bipolar disorder,[6][7][8] although it is not FDA approved for this purpose. This drug has been investigated for use in treatment of obesity,[9][10] especially to aid in the reduction of binge eating,[11][12] and also as a possible treatment for alcoholism.
Avatar n tn Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has a history with bulimia and might attribute your heart problems to bulimic activity? I've started experiencing PVC's and NSVT about 1 year ago, and had a 10-year history with bulimia during my teen/college years. I've stopped for over 5 years now, but am wondering if it's possible that I damaged my heart in some way.
Avatar m tn Often eating disorders can revolve around control, fear, and self-loathing, which after sexual abuse can be triggered in a person. But trully, there is no 1 proven cause for bulimia, there are only theories and similarities between bulimics, but cases can be different for each person.
Avatar n tn I have been a struggling with bulimia on and off for about 10 years. More recently, I am suffering with anxiety pain in my ride side and insomnia collectively. Could this be related to the long term effects of bulimia and what should I do first.
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
Avatar f tn The recurrent use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain is another essential feature of Bulimia. Many individuals with Bulimia employ several methods in their attempt to compensate for binge eating. The most common compensatory technique is self-induced vomiting after an episode of binge eating. The immediate effects of vomiting include relief from physical discomfort and reduction of fear of gaining weight.
Avatar f tn ive suffered with bulimia on & off since i was 10. for the last 3 years it gotten worse but ive just met someone who i would love to start a family with. i just dont know if i have ruined my chances because of my disorder.
1560494 tn?1294843840 I believe that digestive problems are linked to bulima. I have read this somewhere. I also have suffered from bulimia for many years, and have been diagnosed with Irritable Boweld Disease, but now I have come to realize that my digestive problems are from my bulimia. I have messed up my body so much that I have to take something everyday in order to go to the bathroom, if I don't I will go days without.
Avatar m tn An NSAID is good for inflammation, Anti-Seizure (like Lyrica, Neurontin or Topamax) medications are good for nerve pain. If Lyrica made your fiance too drowsy, Topamax might be a better alternative. This is what I take instead. It's in the same class, but has different side effects. Many people do not get as drowsy. Muscle relaxers can help too. Everyone's cocktail is different, because everyone's reacts differently to medications.
