Topamax and lithium

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and lithium

topamax

Avatar m tn Lithium Orotate is a lithium salt containing lithium as a orotate ion not a cabonate and is sold by health food stores and more than a few shady online sellers as everything from a cure for depression to an alternative to normal medical treatment. There is a misguided belief among some that its more green and more natural than Lithium Carbonate which of course is hilarious as both are versions of the same substance.
Avatar f tn I am bipolar, have chronic migraines, and doing IVF. I use lithium and lamictal for my mood stabilizers and will stay on them through my pregnancy. The tentative plan is to add topamax after baby for the migraines and an added mood stabilizer boost. I am loving the possible side effect of weight loss as I am overweight, but I would be devastated if I lose my hair. I may have a migraine everday but they're not so bad I would hand over my hair for relief.
Avatar f tn hey, i have rapid cycling bipolar and am on a lot of medication, prozac, lithium, lamictal, seroquel. i have put on a lot of weight since going on these meds, ive practically doubled in size! im coming off prozac and intend to come off anything except lithium. Im afraid that i will have severe mood swings when i do this but i need to get my life back, i sleep most of the day because of fatigue and i need to lose weight! any advice please? be well.
Avatar m tn I have looked into these types of Meds to counteract the weight gain and I am interested in seeing how it would help. I don't have any issue with taking another med, especially if it were to stop the weight gain.. it's a serious problem as for me the ones that don't make you gain weight are never effective! I am tall and used to be naturally slim, I could eat what I want but now I don't seem to eat much at all and have still put on weight, I exercise on a treadmill asawell.
Avatar n tn I gained 30 lbs in 2 months on depakote -- doc took me off it and now on Lamictal and Lexapro. No problems so far, I'm feeling OK, and have lost 24 lbs in 3 months, still losing weight.
1255505 tn?1272819115 I hadn't heard of the anti-inflamitory hypothesis. I had read that lithium and anti-convulsants are thought to be sodium channel blockers and therefore decrease electrical activity in specific parts of the brain. I would like to know if brain scans have been used to contrast/compare epileptics and manic depressives. By the way I do take 3 capsules of fish oil a day.
Avatar n tn Hello, My psych. tried me on all of the newer atypicals, and I couldn't tolerate any of them. She talked me into giving lithium a try. I'm also working my way up to 400 mg. of Lamictal a day, but that is so expensive, I don't know if I can afford it. My questions are about lithium. I was hesitant to try it because of its reputation for causing weight gain. She started me on just 450 mg a day, and I already feel better.
Avatar f tn i can advise you to speak to your doctor about your problems, ive been through the same thing and its part of dysphoric mania, where your mind is depressed but you have all this energy that changes into rage and anger. you could take lamatical and lithium together but they do have their side effects which can ruin your treatment plan. best to speak to your doctor.
Avatar f tn Hi, I would suggest you to discuss with your doctor if Topamax will be suitable for you. Topamax has proved to be very effective for migraine prophylaxis. Recent studies have shown that Topamax is very effective for reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. http://www.*************.com/migraine/medications/topamax.html http://www.relieve-migraine-headache.com/topamax-migraine.html Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn the wellbutrin has no effect on me at all and i was actually wondering about topamax. i have tried almost every antidepressent and nothing. but i never thought about a mood stabilizer nor my doc apparently so if anyone has any advise or opinions about any bp meds that worked well for anyone but i don't want to take the ones that make you gain weight. i lost and maintained 130ib weight loss and don't want to gain any so.
Avatar f tn It would be interesting to find out how many people are on more than one medication for their mental health. I am currently on 3 medications, Depakote and Lithium for my BP and Zopiclone to aid sleep. I realise this is a very basic poll as it does not show how many different types of mental health problems are being experienced but depending on the response this could lead to a further poll about diagnosis etc.
614508 tn?1265281722 Lithium, Zoloft, Ativan. Any advise would be welcome.
Avatar n tn Of the mood stabilizers, Lamictal is weight neutral. Topamax and Zonegran (both anticonvulsants used off-label for mood stabilization) are associated with weight loss. Of the atypical antipsychotics, Abilify and Geodon have the lowest risk of weight gain.
Avatar f tn I found some literature that was published about a psychiatric patient who developed hyperthyroid while taking Topamax, but he was also on Lithium and I think that is now known to disrupt thyroid functioning if I am not mistaken? I'd still be curious to hear more stories about other people who have developed thyroid problems while taking the medication though.
1276940 tn?1564515084 I had pretty bad hand tremors like you described when I was on Lithium, and my feet did jerk occasionally when I was sleeping. Like you my pdoc knew all about it. I also was on Abilify concurrently. When my feet and arms were constantly moving or restless, my dr. took me off the Abilify. He identified and dealt with it as soon as i reported that it was going on for a week.
427801 tn?1203844562 im currently on wellbutrin, equettro and lithium and have been on them for a couple years. i was also on topamax and wellbutrin in highschool for about 2 years. i dont know how long its been going on, but i notice about 2-3 years ago that my brain keeps screwing stuff up ha ha. like, i cannot for the life of me remember someones name when i meet them. it takes a good 10 or so introductions before i finally remember it. i used to always remember someones name the first time.
Avatar f tn I am 31 and been on bipolar meds for 15 years now on cymbalta and topamax but they are causing my blood pressure to drop to low anyone know of any other meds that may help cant take depokate or lithium allergic thanks for the help
Avatar n tn I use other meds when I get sick but the only psyc meds I take are lithium and wellbutrin. topamax for migraines and low dose of hormones because i do not have an ovary. Crystlas- Migraines SUCK! I go through seasons when I get them so bad and so rapidly I have to pull the car over if I am driving and I am lying by the side of the road throwing up. I carry Imitrex shots and phentigren gel you rub in your arm for nausea. I never leave home without them.
1100992 tn?1262357216 if you compare tegretol with depakote or lithium the 3 most famous classical old drugs for BP and mainly for mania then tegretol is the least harmful and this i read everywhere. So if you consider an MS then tegretol is your best bet. Sure you will need from time to time to do some blood tests (not with trileptal) but at least it won't make you put excessive weight or hair loss like depakote or the other known side effects like lithium BTW egyptian doctors write it all the time.
Avatar n tn To cut through the chase, he gave 25MG of Topamax. All the drug did was make me lose my appetite and actually made me feel even more claustrophobic. I actually lost my last doctors appt since I got a panic attack while driving. Didn't it make sense to first treat the anxiety and than the possible mood disorder? Should I take both a SSRI and a mood stabilizer?
Avatar m tn Personaly, I take abilify and lamictal. They are both mood stabilizers and they help me with sleeping, racing thoughts, anxiety, and they seem to make my mood swings not last as long. I still have some problems with depression and agitation, but overall I am doing better. I hope you find the right medication for you!
Avatar f tn s appointment I will be asking (for the second time) for topomax instead of the lithium and lamictal...or at least instead of the lithium....lamictal I am not sure about the weight with that. I only lose my appetite if I am upset (which has always been my habit) but with these pills I have increased appetite. Risperdal was the worse for me....
Avatar m tn I was employed, functioning everyday and eating right and working out and I was healthy and doing what seemed to be okay. And then the next minute I had this huge panic attack out of nowhere and everything went downhill from there... Now I can't leave my house.. can barely leave my bed. I'm trying different medications all the time (which I HATE) I hate the side effects. I don't believe in taking medication. Lithium made me gain A TON of weight.
202665 tn?1248806733 I'm maxed out on Lithium and Cymbalta. Also taking Lamictal - Trazadone, seroquel or valium as needed. During a recent extended hypo-manic state the doc asked me to try topomax. i've tried an array of other medications that I've not been able to tolerate. I have friends using the med for migraine control and have had kidney stones which they beieve is a result of the medication. My understanding is that there is only a 3% - 5% greater change of stones with the drugs.
Avatar f tn If you have taken tegretol I would be interested in hearing from you about your experiences with this medication. Apparently I have become much more emotionally sensitive, and I know, much more short tempered. Has this happened to you and what did you do about it? I don't know whether it's me changing and not putting up with as much as I used and those around me can't handle it or if it's the meds. Maybe it's both - I really don't know.
1985196 tn?1402190098 I've been taking it 3 day's now , with the Lithium and Seroquel Xr ( which i'm slowly reducing ) comming off , i'm feeling great , my paranoia is almost gone ,my auditory hallucination's are as good as silenced ,my messed up thinking (Delusions ) are nowhere near as bad ,and i feel that my mood's are stabilizing , i have energy i can do stuff again like leave my house without thinking i'm gonna get shot by a sniper :/ , and my mind seem's to be clearer , I just h
1172209 tn?1263427216 I've been on lithium for several years. At first I gained weight but after I got used to it my body just levelled off. If I was worried about anything it was the depression that was making me gain weight not only from eating but also not moving around much. If lithium gives you a few extra pounds it might be an ok thing if you get your life back. You have to watch your salt intake. Sure too much is bad but having the levels fluctuate isn't so good either.
