Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and birth control effectiveness

topamax

Avatar n tn i am just starting to take a low dose of topamax at 50mg a day and not going to increase to more than 100mg a day and i am wondering if this will interfere with my lutera pills?? i have read that it lowers the effectiveness but i have also read that it doesnt happen until you reach doses of 200mg or more. i have also heard that by increasing your birth control dose you can help the effectiveness and my doctor specifically prescribed lutera because it has a higher dosage than most BC.
Avatar n tn The only antibiotic that has ever been shown to interfere with birth control levels and effectiveness is a medicine called rifampin which is used to treat tuberculosis. Rifampin may also interfere with the birth control patch and vaginal ring so if you are taking it, be sure to use a back-up, non-hormonal (i.e. condom) form of birth control.
Avatar m tn I started Topamax like 2 months ago and I got my period for like a month straight and this month I haven't gotten it yet, but my gyno says it's normal. I take the birth control pill and topamax decreases the effectiveness, so that's the main reason why mine's all screwed up, but I hear it's normal.
Avatar f tn My girlfriend started birth control the Sunday after her period and the package says to use back up protection for 1 week, we had sex without backup the Monday after and I didn't come close to ejaculating before I stopped, is this okay? should I be concerned?
Avatar f tn I recently had unprotected sex and I wanted to make sure my birth control actually works. I’ve had it in for a year and a half, I’m 5’5 and 330lbs. I read that in obese women it may be less effective over time so I was just wondering. Thanks!

Avatar f tn I continued to take the birth control while i took the antibiotics, which i know antibiotics lowers the effectiveness of the BC but will a few days after you stop taking the antibiotics the birth control be effective? or how long?
1703515 tn?1350500231 If Klonopin does decrease the effectiveness of your birth control, your doctor(s) and/or pharmacist may recommend using a form of back-up birth control either all the time or when you're taking the Klonopin regularly.
Avatar f tn Welbutrin has worked for me for years, but about 8 days after starting Topamax for migraine control, the depression is kicking my butt. Could the Topamax be responsible? I would rather have migraines than be depressed!
Avatar m tn I've been taking Topamax 50mg-100mg daily and I have been also taking Yasmin. The two were told to me to be ineffective when used together, so I've been using a back up method of condoms. I'm unhappy with this so my OBGYN switched me to Zovia, which I do not like. My question is, could YAz and Topamax at 50-100mg, be taken together?

Avatar f tn I was also on it for migraine prevention and my doc took me off when we started trying to get pregnant
Avatar f tn My friend told me it only took a few days and I believed her because she is on birth control also. The papers that came with them didn't tell me how long. Right after I had sex, I started getting headache's everyday. Is that a sign of pregnancy or is it just the pills causing them? And is how long for sure does it take to get in your system?
Avatar f tn is it bad to be taking microlite birth control and adios diet pills? please help!!
Avatar f tn antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. You should use a back up method of protection such as condoms while you are taking the antibiotics. Other than that there aren't any interactions between the two.
Avatar f tn http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-effectiveness-chart-22710.htm Have you ever been late for your period before? Most women get their period during the placebo week. Are you taking the 21 or 28 day pack? I usually start the exact same day, on a Wednesday, during the placebo week but I have had my period start a day before or a day late. When I was a teenager, my period was always on a Sunday.
Avatar f tn A lot of antibiotics cause birth control to be ineffective.
Avatar m tn Hi, I was wondering if I can store my birth control pills in a pill finder (I have many other pills to take and doing it this way makes it much easier to keep track of what pills I've taken and when). I was recently told that removing the birth control from its bubble package with decrease the effectiveness, so it's really important that I know whether or not this is true. I have a pituitary adenoma and the pills are necessary to keep my periods regulated. Please help me! Thank you!
