My thumb is not bruised or swollen but I have shooting pain when I bend it. I can bend it all the way but it shoots pain and it hurts in between the two joints. I have tried icing and wrapping it but nothing has helped and it has been nine days. My hand is also very cold but like I said before it is not bruised or swollen.

A localized bruising, swelling and pain in thumb can be due to infection, bleeding blood vessels, injury, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis or inflammation of the lining of joints, arthritis or due to tendonitis. You need non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, along with something to bring down the swelling. An X-ray may not reveal anything if there is no fracture. You may need blood tests and MRI. Hello. I smashed my thumb in my car door and I can normally just deal with pain but this hurt so bad it made me cry. I had it x-rayed in the ER but the Dr said it wasn't broken just bruised. But I was told by a nurse in training that they can't really tell if it's broke when it's swollen. But its been about 2 days and it's still swollen twice the size its supposed to be, the bruises are a bluish green. it's been feeling numb/tingly ever since.

She injured her thumb during a soccer match in March. Her whole thumb is still swollen and painful if she gets it hit or bumped., and now it is May. Xray and MRI showed no breaks but some redness. The doctor said in kids this takes awhile to heal. He never put a splint or any thing on it. As I said she is very active and athletic.She plays soccer, ice skates golfs and bowls at times. and is always on her trampoline.I don't think this can heal as she keeps getting it re-ingured.

Index finger on right hand swollen and painful to bend.. Hard to tell if pain is first or second knuckle.. Swelling is mostly at base of finger.. No warmth or redness noted.. Have "skiers" thumb for about a month now.. Just woke up and boom thumb was swollen at base.. Finger was little stuff and next morning swollen and painful.. As long as it's straight there is no pain.. Getting old is for the birds!!

My doctor says the stabbing pain I get in the base of my thumb on the fleshy palm part is probably osteoarthritis, This came on quite suddenly several months ago - I had on occasions put my hand out to stop my elderly husband from tripping over. The joint at the base of the thumb is also quite swollen in a boney sort of way. I mainly get a short sharp stabbing pain on the fleshy part but on resting the hand it does not hurt that much. Could this be a ligament problem?

What concerns s me most is the IP joint (on the nail side) is swollen and hard like bone! The rest of the thumb is swollen but soft.

Baring in mind at this point i still cannot move my thumb (there is no pain in the thumb itself), the base of my thumb is very swollen and bruised, and it still hurts a hell of a lot, mainly right between the thumb and index finger, and around the base of the thumb. My ultrasound she had to move my thumb around to get a proper look, i cried in agony while she was doing this. BUTTTTT the results showed nothing wrong with the ligaments. The pain radiates into my elbow area and even seems to be triggered by certain positions. This morning I awoke with pain and clicking in my right thumb. Additionally, there is swelling in the thumb and a soreness into the heel of my hand (where thumb connects to hand). I am taking meds for migraine/stroke (Plavix, verapamil, lasix, lisinopril, along with thyroid replacement therapy and some allergy prescriptions.

E but thumb still very painful at times cannot aply pressure fully to grip something tip very sore still after all this time but xray says no break but tendons affected but wonder how long this type of injury takes to recover thumb swollen upper part have had pain in elbow since doing exercises few weeks now ... told at hospital few weeks ago to leave off dressing, but wear on occasion as worried i might knock it..

which I could use as therapy but am afraid that I might damage the ligaments again, if I move the thumb too much. The pain has subsided but not completely. My thumb is stiff.but I work on it daily. How long does it take to cure a painful thumb.

Over a year ago I felt a sharp pulling pain in the fleshy part of my thumb The pain and aching in my wrist pasted after a day or so. Many months later I felt this pain again. It usually passed quickly. Seven months later I noticed that I could not support things like a coffee cup and went to the dr. X ray result indicated normal, no obvious arthritis. I began to experience a rapid increase in loss of strength, grip and dexterity.

TMy thumb got tangled in my 100 lb. bulldogs collar while trying to get him off of my son's dog. When I FINALLY got them seperated I had the worst pain in my thumb and around the base of the thumb. It immediately started swelling. I could move it some, it was just very painful. I thought it would be back to normal next morning if I iced it before bed. Had very painful night and swelling had spread from thumb and base to whole top of my hand and fingers below knuckles, also palm of hand.

Now im fairly sure i dislocated my thumb because it was stiff and swollen. The top part of my hand itself was kind of swollen also. But my biggest concern is that there is a small lump on the bottum part of my wrist now that I can move around. It was pretty big when it originally happened and I kept pushing it back in. 4 days later however it is quite small but still sticks out. How many of you are gamers? Excessive pressing the thumb against a joystick can cause pain in the thumb and seeing as the left thumb is used most for gaming it's a no brainer.

I have a high pain tolerance so i really cant tell how bad it is. Its been 3 weeks almost 4 and it isnt swollen but every time its hit it hurts. The pain is located from my bottom thumb knuckle almost or to my wrist. What is wrong with it? should i see a doctor?

Recently whenever I slightly lift something or even sometimes just moving my left thumb, there is a very severe pain. It is a very sharp pain. It feels like my thumb muscle/vein is torn/tearing off. It starts at the cuticle and goes down about an inch past my thumb on the top. At first I thought it was like I pulled my thumb muscle or something but the pain has gotten worse. Could someone please tell me what it may be. Could it be a nerve, and if so what do I do about it?

This has happened to me before, however, I seem to be more freaked out about this one. Is this normal?? My thumb is swollen, there is white/yellowish pus coming out if I add pressure to it and it hurts a hell of a lot when I add pressure to it. It has been like this for two days. i have full motion in my wrist, and the swollen area is not painful to the touch, I am able to massage the swollen area with out bother, but when the area is stretched it is quite painful, but the pain goes away when its not stretched. I am also able to extend my arm out all the way in front of my body, just now to the side, or anything behind me.

After 18 hours, the swelling had not gone down and the pain had gotten dramatically worse, so I went in to an urgent care facility and had my thumb checked out. The doctor wasn't asking many questions and barely touched my thumb to inspect it. He ordered x-rays, but he said they were normal.

I was helping to put a ceiling up and I had to push it towards middle of room. I am only 115 lbs and 5"2, little boned. Anyway, when I did try to use my hand as a hammer, lol, my thumb went all the way back and I heard a crack/crunch. The pad around my thumb is swollen 3x's its size and my fingers are all swollen. The books I was pulling out slipped and crashed down onto the thumb side of right wrist. It hurt but I continued working ( I have good pain tolerance and stubborn). Thumb side of wrist has some bruising , swollen. Doesn't looked deformed. Icing and taken advil. The area that is painful is scaphoid and down to the bone that is roundish (radial?). Today something happened..

I would like to mention again that I don´t fell any pain in the joint and that It´s a little swollen but I presume It´s because I pressed it a lot using my thumb(it became some kind of addiction to do this).
