Avatar f tn Clinically, high levels of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity in plasma may be associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal toxicity. Myopathy manifested as muscle pain and/or weakness associated with grossly elevated creatine kinase exceeding ten times the upper limit of normal has been reported occasionally. Rhabdomyolysis has also occurred rarely, which may be accompanied by acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria and may result in death.
Avatar f tn My endocrinologist prescribed me Atorvastatin 40mg in place of the simvastatin but it has since given my major chest pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and legs; so I was advised by the pharmacist to stop that and I have only taken the new statin twice and tonight was the second time taking it. Is simvastatin something that can be eased up to a higher dose to do the exact same thing atorvastatin does for the bad cholesterol?
Avatar f tn Patients were put on a cholesterol-lowering diet and given one of the medications. After 18 weeks, patients given simvastatin had significantly lower total cholesterol, lower LDL, lower triglycerides, and higher HDL cholesterol levels than those who took pravastatin. The study found that the patients on simvastatin achieved the target LDL level of less than 130, more than those on pravastatin (65 percent on simvastatin versus 35 percent on pravastatin).
Avatar m tn All of my cholesterol-related numbers are in a healthy range, and I have never experienced any serious side effects (e.g., muscle weakness, kidney and liver impairment, etc.). I have, however, had trouble sleeping for the past several years (perhaps caused by simvastatin, perhaps not). More importantly, I have been experiencing back pain for the past few months and would like to try CBD. I am down to sleep a few hours a night.
Avatar f tn hi just wanted to add that it sounds like part of the problem is the staten. The muscle problem and weakness. The ange and lack of interest is something else I think and maybe he is depressed? Does he have a reason to be depressed? Also, maybe check his thyroid while you are at the doctor. Tiredness and irritablility could be that. Is he sleeping too much or not enough? Hope you can shed some light on this but I would tell the doctor all his symptoms and don't feel like they are nothing.
Avatar f tn The dose can be increased to 80mg if necessary. cpk is an emzyme found in both skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle. If it was normal then u do not have rhabdomylosis, which is the side effect of simvastatin which your doctor was looking for. He has done the correct test and the result was negative. Return to doctor for further investigation of these muscle aches.
Avatar f tn At this time there is no good evidence that links the use of statins with developing ALS and because you had muscle weakness while on a statin does not necessarily predispose you to developing ALS in the future. I would advise you to continue monitoring your symptoms and should they return discuss it with your doctor.
Avatar n tn I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.
Avatar f tn Research shows that 61 out of every 1000 patients on 80mg of simvastatin develop muscle problems. I do believe the half life for Simvastatin is quite short, 5 hours or less. If you take 80mg, then 5hours later only 40mg will remain. Another 5 hours only 20mg. So after 24 hours there will only be around 2-3mg in your body which is top up time.
Avatar f tn Ramipril has been indicated to cause sexual problems, but both these drugs can affect liver function and in turn affect sexual performance.Further more, statin drugs can cause muscle weakness and may lead to a drop in overall energy level. Whenever you suspect any side effect, you are supposed to contact your doctor, who would advise you how to correct the problem by adjusting the dosage or with alternative medicine. So, please consult your doctor for help.
1616588 tn?1298639117 Hi there, this class of drugs (Statins) frequently deplete an enzyme in the body called Co-Enzyme Q10. Deficiency of this enzyme can cause the cramp, muscle and overall feeling of weakness. You can buy this enzyme with the supplements. It can be expensive so buy the highest strength you can afford. Have you told your doctor about this? Your doctor should rule out whether this is a more serious side effect of this class of drugs. Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
Avatar n tn t find the right medicine...Lipitor caused severe muscle weakness, Zetia caused all kind of digestive problems and Pravachol zapped my energy...my count actually went up 30 points while taking WelChol! My doctor is telling me that I have no other choices of medicine to lower my count (total 285, HDL 106 VLDL 21, LDL 188, Triglycerids 106.) My sister is having the same problem so I guess this problem is a family thing. I am really troubled by my doctor's lack of concern.
428155 tn?1203688894 in New Zealand), which my GP had prescribed me 2 years beforehand to control my cholesterol level. I stopped simvastatin and all fibrillations have disappeared. As I was taking simvastatin, I was in fibrillation 17% of the time; 1 month after I stopped simvastatin, the level was down to 0%. I am now experimenting with alternative cholesterol control methods: Omega 3 gels, ground linseed, charcoal.
Avatar f tn You have a higher chance for muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with Lipitor. Especially telling if there are muscle problems like weakness, tenderness, or pain that happen without a good reason, and if your husband also has a fever or feel more tired than usual. I was on Lipitor, but went on Simvastatin 20mg (much less expensive, too) and the results have been very good. Recent blood test shows LDL 45 and HDL 58, trig 55 and chol 114.
620048 tn?1358018235 They read up on all of her meds called the Dr. he stopped the simvastatin and she is much better now and cont to improve. My husband is on it and has no problems. As with most drugs, they affect people different.
10996785 tn?1432812977 Like you, I pulled myself off of Lipitor (atorvastatin) because of muscle and joint weakness/pain and other recorded side effect. I had only taken it for about five weeks and the discomfort remains three weeks later. I had the same reaction to simvastatin, which I am told is the worst of the bunch. I'm waiting a few months and then I will try something with a less violent track record.
Tbd I have been taking Simvastatin on and off for years. About two years ago my doctor added ezetimibe to my regimen. It has been lowering my bad cholesterol how ever the first of this month I missed taking them for about a week and for the first time in years I felt less fatigued. I do have Fibromyalgia which is usually the cause of my fatigue, but this is a different type of fatigue. I have not restarted either of the cholesterol meds back because I have felt so much better.
2085202 tn?1373199740 Hello all. I'm a 26 year old male and have a cholesterol problem with high tryglycerides. I understand I NEED to be on something but i've stopped taking my simvastatin as the longer i've been on it i'm noticing my arms are becoming pathetically frail , weak and tiny. My wrists seemed to have shrunk to the point of where I can cuff my hand over them to a scary point. At first I thought I had a disease of some kind but tests have shown everything is fine.
Avatar m tn The FDA requires warnings that statins may increase the risk of liver damage, memory loss and confusion, elevated blood sugar, type 2 diabetes, muscle weakness (for certain statins). Increasing blood sugar levels can lead to weight gain.
1962464 tn?1344606673 Lowering cholesterol artificially with a statin drug (in your case Simvastatin) is linked to numerous adverse side effects. An amazing article on Dr Mercola's website called "The Dark Truth About the "Wonder Drug" Millions Swear By" written by Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a senior scientist at MIT, posted 12 dangers of statin drugs. One of the dangers listed: "#8.
Avatar m tn Hi iam 30 a week ago my body stated twiching and muscle weakness had MRI blood drawn nothing what is happening but a week ago I was strong no symptoms than this what is this please help
Avatar f tn The short answer is that all of the above - hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or other can all cause muscle weakness. Muscle weakness in the muscles you are talking about feeling weakness in, like from pushups (triceps, deltoids, maybe biceps and trapezius) are associated with hypo and hyperthyroidism though, so I think you're on the right track to look in to your thyroid hormone level as a cause, but I can't say it is definitely one of those, or which one it is.
Avatar m tn I have been having intermittement muscle weakness and joint pain for about 2 months now. Have had a spinal tap (negative) and two MRIs - some lesions seen but neuro says they are "insignificant". MS has been ruled out. The only blood tests that have come back abnormal are for active epstein-barr, vitamin d deficiency (level is 10), thyroid underactive and cortisol underactive. I am extremely exhausted and anxious alot of the time.
5759924 tn?1374704061 Been looking for answers for over a year now as to why my muscle weakness has not subsided. My muscle weakness is generalized, my arms, legs, neck, and back. First noticed the weakness when I was washing my hair in the shower, I could barely hold my arms up without feeling over exerted. It all started with lymph node swelling in the left posterior and supraclavicular regions in my neck. The swelling lasted for 5 months so my ENT had one biopsied.
Avatar f tn oops --- I meant to delete "Both" before I hit the send button. Didn't happen obviously... LOL !
