Avatar f tn Clinically, high levels of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity in plasma may be associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal toxicity. Myopathy manifested as muscle pain and/or weakness associated with grossly elevated creatine kinase exceeding ten times the upper limit of normal has been reported occasionally. Rhabdomyolysis has also occurred rarely, which may be accompanied by acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria and may result in death.
Avatar m tn ) For the past 20 years, I have avoided NSAIDs, acetaminophens, other pain relievers and muscle relaxants because of their adverse effects to liver and kidneys (personally more significant because my dad had kidney disease). Since cannabidiol inhibits the liver's production of cytochrome P450, I am wondering about switching from simvastatin to pravastatin. That would allow me to try CBD, which appears to have minimal side-effects.
Avatar f tn Less common are headache, dizziness, rash, sleep disturbances, muscle pain, cramps, or weakness. Both simvastatin and pravastatin have the same side effect profile, but it does depend on the individual as to whether one would cause more issues than the other." The only negative I have read about Simvastatin in recent times is a study that showed high doses of simvastatin of 80 mg puts a patient at a greater risk for side effects including muscle damage.
Avatar f tn My endocrinologist prescribed me Atorvastatin 40mg in place of the simvastatin but it has since given my major chest pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and legs; so I was advised by the pharmacist to stop that and I have only taken the new statin twice and tonight was the second time taking it. Is simvastatin something that can be eased up to a higher dose to do the exact same thing atorvastatin does for the bad cholesterol?

808920 tn?1268057768 At present time I am on Coreg CR, simvastatin, 81 mg. 81 mg aspirin. Avatar n tn http://www.medicinenet.com/simvastatin/article.htm This could be an allergic reaction to the drug. It will stop if the drug is withdrawn. You need to inform your doctor about this development. He might want to substitute it with another. It cannot be a time coincidence unless you had the itching prior to starting the drug. You could apply an anti-itch lotion or cold compresses on the skin to soothe the areas.
Avatar n tn Are you taking Red Yeast Rice to take the place of the statin drugs? Sounds like you also need some Magnesium to help with the muscle spasms and pain. MSM is also recommended for the pain. I hope this info is helpful.
428155 tn?1203688894 in New Zealand), which my GP had prescribed me 2 years beforehand to control my cholesterol level. I stopped simvastatin and all fibrillations have disappeared. As I was taking simvastatin, I was in fibrillation 17% of the time; 1 month after I stopped simvastatin, the level was down to 0%. I am now experimenting with alternative cholesterol control methods: Omega 3 gels, ground linseed, charcoal.
Avatar f tn Possibility of hypothyroidism and diabetes should be ruled out as the presence of either disease can complicate the muscle pain. The role of Co Q10 in lowering cholesterol is controversial and should not be tried without consulting your doctor. Please discuss these points with your treating physician. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Avatar f tn The risk of any side effect is anywhere between 2% and 5% which classifies this as very safe. Common side effects are muscle pain and sore joints. I would take it and just keep an eye out for anything that may be a side effect. This link will tell you what to look for; http://www.emedicinehealth.com/drug-simvastatin/article_em.
Avatar f tn My husband is fatigued most of the time. Suffers from many other symptoms such as muscle pain, irritability, anger, weakness, lack of interest in anything. He also has some other symptoms lower left abdominal pain, jaw pain, and tingling feeling in his skin. He doesn't know what it might be? Could it be a side effect to his simvastatin? Has taken this for about a year? Or some disorder? Please advise?

Avatar f tn Genneraly if you no muscle pain problems they have you take a liver test every three months to make sure everything is fine. Different statins work differently on different people. You may have to try different ones. They do work.
Avatar m tn Are you sure your muscle pain is related to the statin use? Muscle pains are the most common complaint and has many, many causes. In any case, there is no danger in stopping Crestor suddenly, but discuss it with your doctor. I would have a couple questions for your doctor. First off, why does he have a target of an LDL under 100? That is normally the recommendation for people at high risk of heart disease or those that already have heart disease.
Avatar f tn I have been taking simvastatin for three weeks since having a Tia but have also had a flu like cold for ten days , I am still having aching flu like pains which I would have thought would have passed by now . Avatar f tn I'm 62, and after being diagnosed with "high cholesterol about 12 years ago, I've been on simvastatin (20mg). This has always been an entirely "preventative" measure. No heart disease, I'm skinny (120lbs), don't smoke, hardly drink. Get exercize. I'd love to stop taking the statin given the data on possible muscle damage and cognitive issues. Without taking the statin my recent numbers are HDL 63, LDL 152, overall 235, with a ratio of 3.7.
Avatar f tn My doctor had already given me muscle relaxers and information pills, those help with the pain but it does not get rid of the problem. My physical Therapy have given me some exercise to do, that doesn't help at all. Just to give you a little bids of my heath history. I had angioplasty procedure done in 2005, I had two stents in my arteries.
Avatar n tn I'm on Simvastatin (40mg) which have some nasty side effects, like cramps and muscle spasms. Can you reommend an alternative?
Avatar n tn I started having severe cheek, gum, and teeth pain. No medicine over the counter or prescribed pain meds have worked. Thankfully my doc thought it might be Trigeminal neuralgia..I started an anti seizure med which makes me really sleepy, but the pain stopped.
519736 tn?1253986826 My husband was prescribed generic lipitor about a year ago. Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep.
Avatar m tn Hello, AS of February 2009, I was taking 2000mg of Niacin and 4 fishoils (1200mg each), per day to help my cholesteral. At the time my total cholesteral was 204 (H) and Triglyceride was 128, VLDL 26, LDL 2, HDL 50, Ratio 3.5 (all were whitin range. My TSH level was very low. (I was on Thyroid med for many years. for the last 5 years, the Endo I was going to stopped looking at my TSH, and was only adjusting medication, to keep my Free T3 an and Free T4 whitin levels.
1962464 tn?1344606673 Lowering cholesterol artificially with a statin drug (in your case Simvastatin) is linked to numerous adverse side effects. An amazing article on Dr Mercola's website called "The Dark Truth About the "Wonder Drug" Millions Swear By" written by Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a senior scientist at MIT, posted 12 dangers of statin drugs. One of the dangers listed: "#8.
Avatar m tn Also, unusually, after sitting or being in bed, I get regularly, involuntary muscle spasms mostly affecting the stomach and eqivalent area in the back. There is no pain, just annoying sensation and the wanting to stretch all the limbs. Medication is usual heart stuff following 2008 attack, I don't think Simvastatin is to blame and at the moment Tramadol to help at night.
