Common Questions and Answers about Seborrheic dermatitis scalp flakes

seborrheic-dermatitis

Avatar m tn For the last four years I feel itching, scaling and flakes on my scalp. Now only i came to know that this is Seborrheic Dermatitis. Because of this I lost almost 40% of my hairs. I learnt that this is a temporary hair loss. I tried many shampoo's like selsun, scalpe etc. And also i have been intaking Glacex(B-complex vit) tablets long time. Still My problem is not resolved. Last four year i consulted many doctors (Skin specialists).
Avatar n tn Regarding your response to my question regarding "scalp infection", I looked up seborrheic dermatitis and it says it is another word for dandruff and that the common sign is flakes. In my first e-mail, I listed that I had no flakes. I have red bumps on my scalp in that one area (the scalp behind the lower part of my right ear and down to the end of my hairline just on my right side) and on my right underarm. So I'm wondering how can it be seborrheic dermatitis?
Avatar m tn I am an African-American female in my mid-thirties who has had a major issue with my scalp for a quite a while. If I wash my hair (relaxed) on Sunday, I have flakes by Tuesday and within five days its almost unbearable. The flakes are in patches and I can take a tail-comb and lift the grey scales up. When I part my hair you can clearly see the patches throughout. Its not like normal dandruff.
Avatar m tn A differential for this is an allergic reaction to an unknown trigger ( unless you may be able to provide some triggers) as well as seborrheic dermatitis. Other differentials for a rash will be psoriasis , a fungal infection or a viral infection. You have noted of dry skin along the hairline. With regards to the rash, would you be able to identify any scales in the area also? Psoriatic rash may involve the scalp and they may present with some patches of scales.
Avatar f tn You seem to be having seborrheic dermatitis on your head. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes flaky, dry, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas esp. under the nose or anywhere on face. Eat a healthy diet. You can also take vit B6 and vit A and E which are good for hair and skin. Try medicated shampoos for dandruff. There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos available that can help.
Avatar n tn But a presence of a scalp condition like seborrheic dermatitis or other fungal infections may cause some degree of hair loss. However, it is necessary to note that hair loss with seborrheic dermatitis appears to be more diffused and not well demarcated or patchy. At this point, I have not encountered any effective medical therapy for hair loss. Some have tried minoxidil and corticosteroids but there is really no single effective way. For severe cases , hair transplants may be considered.
Avatar f tn s Best Herbal oils, nothing seems to work for my irritating scalp. My scalp constantly itches and flakes. As soon as I wash and towel blot my hair, my hair starts to itch and my hairline becomes white white. The constant scratching leads to bleeding. Look at these photos and tell me what you think I may have or your recommendations. Thanks in advance. http://images12.fotki.com/v197/photos/2/1058202/8605556/Closeupofflakes1-vi.jpg http://public.fotki.
Avatar f tn Hello, From the symptoms this problem of dry itchy scalp can be due to dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. You can treat flaking and dryness with over-the-counter dandruff or medicated shampoos. Shampoo the hair vigorously and frequently (preferably daily). Active ingredients in these shampoos include salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole, or selenium. But if your hair is colored, don't use products with selenium sulfide or sulfur.
Avatar f tn Hi This may be a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis presents with overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands. In most cases, they may present with scales and may affect other parts of the body like the chest and the face. Have you had this assessed by your dermatologist? You may need medicated shampoos for this. This condition is shown to be aggravated and triggered by stress and weather changes.
Avatar m tn Now i can visibly see hair falling out all over my scalp but the thing that worries me the most is the hair falling from my eyebrows. My scalp flakes a lot and it always produces these little hard keratinized bulbs when the hair falls our.Other symptoms include eyelash fall, styes on my eyes, small pimples on my face, changes in my skin, itchy forehad, bleeding scalp, and beaus lines on my nails, along with minor pitting. My scalp is extremely itchy as well.
Avatar n tn Hello, I cannot confirm anything without examination but it can be nits or lice, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis or scabies bumps. Scabies is characterized by intense itching, usually at night and by small insect-type bites lesions on the skin. Diagnosis of scabies is made by scraping the skin and viewing the material under a microscope to see the characteristic mite or eggs.
Avatar f tn Hello, This can be due to dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff can cause either an overly dry scalp with itchy white flakes that may be waxy or greasy, or it can manifest as an oily scalp with scales. Eat a healthy diet. You can also take vit B6 and vit A and E which are good for hair and skin. Try medicated shampoos for dandruff. There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos available that can help.
Avatar f tn Ever since from being a toddler, my son has rashes what I would called scabs on his scalp…he is 11 years now..we need to cut his hair off bald because the scabs become visible like flakes when ever his hair grow…I don’t think he itches that much cause I hardly see him scratching but when he does its gets like flakes/dandruff. In an earlier age I have taken him to the doc they gave then anti/dandruff shampoo but that didn’t help.
Avatar n tn does anyone here can help me? i have huge flakes in my scalp and it's very itchy, i can't sleep at night. i don't know what to do about it. i used ointment w/ 1% steroid content but it doesnt work out. i have this illness for about 3years already. please help me how to cure it.
Avatar f tn The skin gets extremely red when I scrub it to remove the flakes. Is this area afected by psoriasis or it this dermatitis seborrheic or other condition. It is so embarrassing especially that I work around a lot of people. Cortizone creams help me while I apply them, but as soon as I stop, the condition flares up.
Avatar n tn my scalp is itchy. i see white flakes. feels like I'm getting bit sometimes. help ! I used lice shampoo and it didn't work.
Avatar f tn It sounds and looks like something I've had for awhile called seborrheoic dermatitis. I use Nizoral shampoo once a week or so for my scalp, but you'll need to use a special prescription cream for the facial areas, like something like Protopic. It's bloody expensive, but it really works. I put a little on whenever I start to get red and flaky and usually it's gone in a day, and then I don't need to use it again.
Avatar m tn dry (light brownish) skin flakes along with short hair pour down when i rub my scalp..my scalp is full of these flakes specially along the hairline...i am also experiencing a lot of hair loss ...my hairline has receded and my hair has thinned...ive tried shaving my hair...but the flakes come back along with my hair...they also seem to grow quite slow....i consulted a dermatologist- he gave me a shampoo for dandruff and tinea versicolor ... but its not helping...
Avatar m tn Hello, Protar k is specifically used for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Salibet contains a steroid and can be used in seborrheic dermatitis. you should continue the same treatment. Oral antifungal drugs and immunomodulators such as tacrolimus and pimecrolimus are used in very severe cases.
