From the symptoms it sounds like seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes flaky,dry, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas esp under the nose or anywhere on face and scalp. You can treat flaking and dryness with over-the-counter dandruff or medicated shampoos. Shampoo the hair vigorously and frequently (preferably daily). Active ingredients in these shampoos include salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole, or selenium.
My baby who is 6 months old has never had cradle cap and now she has it. I read that seborrheic dermatitis is an early indication of HIV infection in children. I tested negative at 6 weeks after a needle stick and the patient was negative as well. But I'm so scared I've hurt my baby by breastfeeding because she has never had dermatitis before. And last week she had a rash on her bottom and lower back, tiny red bumps. I am so scared.
Secondly it is mostly found in middle aged men or elderly men and may be found in infants less than one year of age in which it is called cradle cap. Hence if your child is school going then it is unlikely to be seborrheic dermatitis. However it is often hereditary and if you have been diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis, then your child carries the risk of having it in future life during adulthood.

If you have dandruff and spots it could be caused by a yeast overgrowth similiar to when babies get cradle cap. This is not uncommon. This is why there are lots of anti-dandruff shampoos on sale. Try Head and Shoulders or a Nizoral shampoo to see if it helps.
But you need to go to a dermatologist to get it property diagnosed and treated and then you can forget about it.
Hi ladies my first baby is 6weeks old now and has cradle cap. I was so worried I had done something wrong but thankfully that isn't the case as I didn't know anything about it so I did some research. My question is how can I get rid of it? Its not affecting him but it just looks bad to look at. I bought a cream called dermcrem for dermatitis and nappy rash and I think its improving it a bit but what else can I try?
The facial rash may not be related to the cradle cap. but it can also be due to a fungal infection or dermatitis. Perioral dermatitis which presents as groups of itchy or tender small red papules that may appear round the mouth, upper lip, nose, chin or cheeks. The surrounding skin may be pink, and the skin surface often becomes dry and flaky.
This condition responds well to antibiotic treatment but can recur at a later date or when the antibiotics are discontinued.

This is a Q for mommy's who already have a LO. My 2 month old has cradle cap, which in my opinion has gotten bad. It is yellow & scaly. I have used baby oil & tried brushing the scales off but it is not working well. It has gotten rid of a lot of it but not all & i have done it multiple days. It seems to be irritating her head too. Any suggestions?
They used to use it as a moisturizer for baby's skin and if your baby develops cradle cap it makes it easier to comb out the flakes. It's not as popular now bc there are tons of lotions that are safer. The oil isn't unsafe to use but when baby reaches toddler stage it can look like something to drink and some toddlers have died bc it's gotten into their lungs coating them and basically they drown without ever being in water.
