seborrheic-dermatitis

Avatar f tn Hi You might be suffering from scalp (seborrheic) dermatitis or scalp eczema or scalp psoriasis. The exact diagnosis depends on clinical examination. Seborrheic dermatitis presents as dry skin on the scalp, which flakes off (dandruff). The skin on the face, behind the ears, eyelids, nose and chest may also be affected. Symptoms of scalp eczema may include greasy yellowish scales that may turn flake off along intensely itchy and inflamed red scalp.
Avatar m tn Over the past couple of days my scalp has been flaking more than usual. But over the past day or two, my scalp and the back of my neck and my tops of my shoulders feel like it's gotten a light sunburn, but I haven't been out in the sun. I also noticed that the back of my scalp is red in a very splotchy (medical term...I know) fashion. Could this just be stress? I've been under alot lately...or is this actually something?
Avatar n tn At this point, there is really no effective medical therapy for hair loss. If your hair loss is associated with tinea and seborrheic dermatitis then the underlying disorders need to be addressed first. Hair loss also has a genetic basis. Male or female pattern baldness may follow a hereditary pattern. Treatment of the tinea and seborrheic dermatitis may help resolve the hair loss. Creams may not be sufficient for scalp infections. You may need oral antifungal therapy.

Avatar n tn The most likely differential for this is a severe case of seborrheic dermatitis. The cause for seborrheic dermatitis is yet unknown and there is no definite form of medical therapy as this condition may recur. Others have associated yeast infections with it. While some have implicated stress and environmental factors. You may seek second opinion for your condition. Does anyone in the family also have a similar condition?
Avatar n tn hi, Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin disorder affecting the scalp, face, and trunk causing scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin. It particularly affects the sebum-gland rich areas of skin. The treatment for Seborrheic dermatitis is effective and there are many options available. You may discuss with your doctor the options that work best for you. Plant therapy has been tried, but none of them have been certified yet.
Avatar n tn Hi, Seborrhoeic eczema (also Seborrheic dermatitis AmE, seborrhea) is a skin disorder affecting the scalp, face, and trunk causing scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin. It particularly affects the sebum-gland rich areas of skin. Soaps and detergents such as sodium laureth sulfate may precipitate a flare-up, as they strip moisture from the top layers of the skin, and the drying property of these can cause flare-ups and may worsen the condition.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the info! I have tried some of the shampoos with salicylic acid or coal tar - all it did was make my scalp worse- sort of firery sore and super itchy. that's why I think its dry scalp and not dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis - the symptoms just don't fit. my hair and scalp are dry, not greasy - even if i go 3 days between shampoos my hair is not greasy. the flakes are small and white and not oily.
Avatar f tn The first time she got it was a few months ago, it started off with a severe itchy scalp and red itchy spots on her neck/back, then she woke up with a shock, her scalp was covered in yellow crust, it was awful she was so distressed, i had to get it out with a nit comb. That time she was suffering from stress. Now once again it's happening, the weather here in England has been 30c and she works in a School kitchen with no air con so you can imagine how hot it is for her.
Avatar n tn Seborrheic dermatitis may require frequent shampooing and washing of affected parts of the body.It usually presents in the chest, the scalp and the face. Psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis may sometimes be hard to distinguish fom each other. A consult with your primary physician may be able to help. Psoriasis may present atypically as nonscaly reddish bumps that may appear like rash.
Avatar n tn if someone has seborrheic dermatitis around his lips and chin, does it means he has HIV, or is seborrheic dermatitis a normal skin condition that affect many people.
Avatar n tn Hi, probably it is because of seborrheic dermatitis, you might be having acne problem. In some people, a yeast (fungus) called malassezia grows in the sebum along with bacteria. Antifungal treatments, such as ketoconazole (Nizoral), are often effective. “Try using the shampoo daily until your symptoms are controlled, then cut back to two or three times a week.
Avatar n tn I am of Indian - asian origin, male and 19 years of age. I often find my scalp quite itchy and when I do go for a good scratch, I usually on average find that the source of the problem is a hair follicle or two which I would find uprooted in my hands with some kind of a deposit where the root should be. I was wondering if this is normal or whether there might be something causing irritation to my hair roots.
Avatar f tn This is because eczema often presents with itchy, red, dry and flaky skin. If the rash is non itchy then dry skin or seborrheic dermatitis of the face are important differentials to be ruled out. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes flaky, dry, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas esp under the nose or anywhere on face. Topical antifungals and mild steroids are the usual treatment and combination of the two can be used to treat stubborn patches.
Avatar n tn Hello, For such symptoms Seborrhoeic dermatitis, Pityriasis amianticea ,Tinea capitis (if itchy) and seborrheic keratosis should be ruled out. Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is believed to be an inflammatory reaction related to the proliferation of normal skin habitant Malassezia. I suggest you to get it examined from a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis.
Avatar n tn In seborrheic dermatitis, the scalp is greasy and when severe may present with scales. The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is still unknown although yeast infections, stress and weather have been implicated. A dermatologist is the best person to consult with this. Vigorous and frequent shampooing is the mainstay of therapy more than the type of shampoo being used. So wash your hair frequently and scrub the scalp vigorously. Discuss this with your dermatologist.

Avatar n tn Hello, The symptoms can be due to dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis or lice. Eat a healthy diet. You can also take vit B6 and vit A and E which are good for hair and skin. Try medicated shampoos for dandruff. There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos available that can help. The most effective ingredients -- antimicrobials -- to look for are zinc pyridinethione, selenium sulfide, sulfur and ketoconazole (also available by prescription).
Avatar f tn Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disorder that mainly affects the scalp, causing itchy, yellow or white patchy scales or thick crusts that may attach to the hair shaft, as seen in the lower left side of the image. Your doctor may recommend topical creams, ultraviolet light therapy, or oral medication to help restore skin color and stop the spread of white patches. Skin grafts are also effective for getting rid of small patches of white skin.
Avatar f tn My husband has large itchy, flaky skin on his scalp and in his beard and mustache. It flakes in large yellow chunks that tend to be quite thick and if scratched off will often bleed. It is embarassing as he has large yucky flakes falling out all the time. He has tried prescription shampoos which worked for a couple months only. Now he uses a different kind of shampoo and conditioner every time he washes his hair which helps a bit but not much. Also have used different oils, etc.
Avatar f tn i also have been having such an itchy scalp itchy underarms and on my breats and by my upper thighs in between my legs but not on my vagina i cant stop scratching..could this be a sign of cancer?... i have had this for 2 1/2 weeks now and am afraid to go to the doctor. My husband died of cancer and it started with swollen lymph nodes in the side of his neck and i am very afraid. could it just be lice or something simple like that? please help.
Avatar n tn Regarding your response to my question regarding "scalp infection", I looked up seborrheic dermatitis and it says it is another word for dandruff and that the common sign is flakes. In my first e-mail, I listed that I had no flakes. I have red bumps on my scalp in that one area (the scalp behind the lower part of my right ear and down to the end of my hairline just on my right side) and on my right underarm. So I'm wondering how can it be seborrheic dermatitis?
